Guest commentary: Rambosk reassignment serves the law and the public

Sunday, May 11, 2008
I was deeply disappointed to read your Thursday editorial about Kevin Rambosk, a distinguished member of our agency. Your reversal of opinion on Rambosk’s reassignment done to satisfy both state and federal law, from “appropriate and proactive” to “inappropriate and inactive,” is a remarkable non sequitur even for the editorial page editor. Guest Commentary: Help us find the ‘missing’ on Collier County’s big day

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Today, May 8, is Collier County’s 85th birthday. Backed by Barron Collier’s personal pledge to complete the Tamiami Trail, Florida Gov. Carey A. Hardee signed Collier County into law on May 8, 1923. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Thanks to donors, health-sciences hall will be a reality

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
I am pleased to announce that the Edison College Collier Campus has completed the first step toward providing an adequate number of registered nurses in Collier County by meeting the $2 million fundraising challenge issued last fall by the state for the construction of a $12 million, 30,000-square-foot allied health sciences hall. Guest commentary: ‘I will keep looking for new recipes’ for Gulf access

Monday, May 5, 2008
I enjoy cooking ... even when it gets hot in the kitchen. I don’t always use a recipe. Sometimes my creations come out great, other times not.
I find the process is a lot like my work as a county commissioner. Full story »

SW Florida needs to invest in economic innovation

Friday, May 2, 2008
If “necessity is the mother of invention” as Plato said, then it is high time for Southwest Florida to invent a new economy! For too long our region has satiated itself on real-estate development as if it were the only item on the menu in a restaurant serving economic development. This addiction has resulted in our region teeming with residential-housing inventory — with no appetite to scan further down the menu. This craving has created lethargic regional economic performance and taken the shine out of our Sunshine State. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Business incentives are a wise investment in our future

Thursday, May 1, 2008
What makes companies choose to locate or remain in Collier County? You may be surprised to hear that for a major sector of businesses, it’s not “quality of life.” Full story »

Guest commentary: ‘Practical’ arts develop skills, not creative minds

Monday, April 28, 2008
My high-school graduation requirements didn’t have the concept of an arts credit. Had I not had friends whose parents wanted their children to appreciate concerts and plays, I would not have seen live theater before my college roommate joined the Greek tragic chorus of “Antigone.” Full story »

Guest commentary: Legislation would put university system in political arena

Monday, April 28, 2008
Chair, Florida Board of Governors: The Florida House is taking up a bill that has great consequences for higher education in this state. I encourage readers of the Daily News to contact their representatives in the House as soon as possible and encourage them to vote “no.” Full story »

Kim Pokarney: St. John Neumann’s program really prepares students

Sunday, April 27, 2008
St. John Neumann High School in Golden Gate has been able to find a way to give students exactly what they need the most — preparation. Full story »

Bonnie Erbe: The ‘kitchen’ ad and other stumbling blocks on way to election

Sunday, April 27, 2008
If you haven’t viewed the “attack” ad that is generating so much anger against Hillary Rodham Clinton, at least in the Ivory Tower offices of The New York Times and among many Barack Obama supporters, you owe it to yourself to watch it. Full story »

Deroy Murdock: Starving U.S. economy can’t wait for McCain incentives

Sunday, April 27, 2008
“Incentives matter.” That sentence encapsulates the free-market approach to economic growth. Unfortunately, these two words exceed the attention spans of easily distracted Washington politicians. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Coaches must take responsibility for players’ lives

Friday, April 25, 2008
As the athlete runs through rigorous drills with heavy armor, any ordinary person would have quit. The body was trained to go past its physical limits, and the old motto (“no pain, no gain”) plays in the back of his mind like a broken record. Full story »

Guest commentary: Marriage and slavery

Friday, April 25, 2008
Recently, couples from diverse denominations gathered to celebrate marriage in the chapel of First Baptist Church, where I have served as pastor for 16 years. It was particularly part of the statewide support of seniors for Constitutional Amendment No. 2, which has been placed on the Nov. 4 ballot. Full story »

Guest commentary: What Albert Einstein could teach Florida legislators if he were alive today

Wednesday, April 23, 2008
Albert Einstein, renowned physicist and 1922 Nobel Prize winner, could use his genius to convey common sense to some of our Tallahassee legislators to pass the 2008 primary seat belt bill in order to save hundreds of lives, prevent thousand of serious injuries on our Florida highways, and save millions of dollars in Medicaid costs to Florida taxpayers. Guest Commentary: Team Work Successful

Friday, April 18, 2008
There have been many comments and opinions offered with regards to the pending bills in Tallahassee on aggregate mining. One comment that I can agree with is that intrusion of State and Federal government into local government’s home rule is not right. Each of us whether elected for local, state or federal offices are elected by the same voters. Therefore, I would like to think with that in mind our ability to work together on behalf of our residents would be a no brainier. Unfortunately that is not always the case. It isn’t even the case here in our own county. Full story »
