Phil Lewis: Not just a J-school is at stake

Saturday, May 10, 2008
Florida’s public agencies and state institutions are in the midst of a belt-tightening exercise that calls for some hard decisions. I bumped into one such decision on Thursday and it hit close to home — home being journalism and, by extension, a free press. Let me explain. Full story »

Jeff Lytle: When it comes to advice on life, Mom always has known best

Saturday, May 10, 2008
Surely the bee was dead. Central Pennsylvania swarms with moving, live, stinging bees come summer, and this particular lawn specimen was still, dead and harmless. “Yes, honey,” the mother told her toddler, eager to load the bee into his red toy dump truck. “You can play with it. That bee is dead.” Full story »

Vintage Naples

Saturday, May 10, 2008
May has been declared History Month in Naples. For seven years Art Ullmann of Naples has performed a public service by helping tell Naples’ story in vintage photos. He loans items from his priceless collection — gleaned from negatives left behind by a blueprint/surveying business that he bought years ago — on a regular basis to the Daily News. Full story »

Ben Bova: What’s so wrong with being elite?

Saturday, May 10, 2008
When did the word “elite” become an insult? When did “elitism” become something to be ashamed of? Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines “elite” as: “The choice part ... the best of a class ... a group of persons who by virtue of position or education exercise much power or influence.” Maybe the problem that some people have with the idea of “elite” is that phrase, “by virtue of position.” Maybe they object to the idea of a person being born with a silver spoon in his mouth, rich and secure from birth. Guest Commentary: Working together, we can start a wave of water conservation

Saturday, May 10, 2008
A prolonged and widespread water shortage can hardly be described as a lucky break. The impacts of below-average rainfall that began in 2006 have been at times severe on South Florida’s residents, businesses and local municipalities — not to mention our lawns. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Get involved, get your students to tune in to education

Saturday, May 10, 2008
I have had the opportunity to teach students in ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th grades at Palmetto Ridge High School. For the most part it has been great! These are wonderful students with their glowing future out in front of them! However, for an ever-increasing percentage, it isn’t going to happen! Full story »

Guest Commentary: We need your help to prevent deaths from suicide

Saturday, May 10, 2008
May is Mental Health Awareness month. May 8 was Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. May 10 was the 10th anniversary of my son, J. Timothy Hogan, dying of suicide. Tim was slim, 6 feet tall, with curly brown hair that he was always trying to straighten in his youth. He had a wry wit and, although the youngest of my five children, he could always keep his siblings in line. They had a great relationship and enjoyed being together. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Collier school chief’s hiring, management practices need work

Saturday, May 10, 2008
From the information in t wo recent articles dealing with the hiring of three school administrators, I am not convinced that the process used was in the best interest of Collier County Public Schools. In my view, it contributed further to a deterioration of the strained relations between staff and the superintendent. In addition to that, I do not believe it was most effective; nor do I think that the candidates chosen represent the quality personnel we should be looking for. Full story »

Guest Commentary: Spreading awareness, hope about Parkinson’s disease

Saturday, May 10, 2008
Springtime to most people in Southwest Florida means flower gardens, picnics and baseball. To my wife and I, it means Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, observed in April. My wife and I, both full-time residents of Naples, are busy traveling and speaking about this subject. Gretchen and I have had Parkinson’s disease (PD) for nearly 20 years combined. Full story »

Word of what some on Capitol Hill fear may become the next major congressional scandal is beginning to leak out. Editorial: Cutting custodians more than just ‘staff reduction’

Saturday, May 10, 2008
Janitorial services are in line for privatization as Collier County Public Schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson aims to save money. While there are limits to what we would favor privatizing — jails come to mind — there are few executives in the public or private sector who can fault Thompson’s goals. Full story »

Eighty-eight percent of high-schoolers drinking? Eighty-two percent of high-schoolers smoking marijuana and cigarettes? Those are big, scary numbers. Full story »

Editorial: Dog-friendly, voter-friendly

Saturday, May 10, 2008
Man’s best friend is finally being treated as such in Bonita Springs. Part of the city’s Depot Park will be designated as a dog-friendly area — as long as pooches are kept on leashes. Give credit to City Council member Martha Simons, and a majority of her colleagues for going along. Full story »
