Reading to their younger peers
Students from Bonita Springs Middle School read to their elementary school counterparts once a month. First grade students in Lisa Beringer's class, most of them second year English students, build up their reading confidence through the program as do the readers.

Efy Tijerina, 11, and Ketna Raphael, 13, are just two of the students from Bonita Springs Middle School who read to their elementary school counterparts once a month. First grade students in Lisa Beringer's class, most of them second year English students, build up their reading confidence through the program as do the readers.

Bonita Springs Elementary teacher Lisa Beringer, right, thanks Bonita Middle School student Ketna Raphael, 13, far right, after reading to her class Thursday as part of a once-a-month program. Raphael came to America last year from Haiti and spoke little English. Most of the students in Beringer's class are second year English students as well. "Reading aloud builds up their reading confidence," says Beringer.
