Looking Down

Posted December 30, 2007

So Much for Merry Christmas

Here's what's happened since Justin Peters and Derek Damon were sent back down to the team from the Albany River Rats:

1. Leading scorer Mathieu Melanson sent on loan to the AHL's Manitoba Moose

2. Last Thursday night, defenseman David Cornacchia is arrested for allegedly causing a drunken disturbance on a flight from Toronto to Dallas to meet up with the team for Friday's game in Biloxi, Miss. According to the affidavit, Cornacchia slapped a male flight attendant who wouldn't give him a third drink. He then exposed himself to fellow passengers and head-butted passengers attempting to restrain him. When met by FBI agents at the DFW airport, Cornacchia said he'd had 7-8 drinks that day.

3. Florida blows a 3-1 third period lead on Friday night-- going on to win 5-4 in a shootout to lowly Mississippi -- a gutsy win with a short bench nonetheless.

4. GM Craig Brush holds a press conference regarding the Cornacchia incident. He says Cornacchia will meet the team in Pensacola and will continue to play until Cornacchia is proven guilty.

5. Florida falls 6-5 in overtime to last-place Pensacola on Saturday night. Cornacchia scores a goal. Normally steady Peters gives up six goals in 38 shots. Pensacola gets 21 shots in the third period alone.

6. More shaky information surfaces about Cornacchia -- he is rumored to have broken a nose while drunk at a holiday party, to have shoved his way out of the penalty box early, injuring an off-ice official. Fan club officials say there was an altercation at the party, but that there was no broken nose, and the incident has been greatly exaggerated. As for the penalty box incident, Cornacchia has said it was completely unintentional, and that he was just trying to get back on the ice.

7. Blades get ready to play again vs. Pensacola tonight at 6:05.

Those are the facts. Here's some brief opinion. I honestly don't know what to think about the Cornacchia incident. The affidavit is some pretty juicy reading -- but as no one down here was there to see what really happened, we probably have to take it all with a grain of salt.

As far as the drinking incidents -- well, we all know that the majority of the players (probably the majority of athletes, really) are pretty heavy drinkers. Behavior from these players -- i.e. violence during games, coarse language, questionable treatment and language toward women, immaturity, heavy drinking -- all those things are tolerated among Blades players, because fans admire these players and society in general tends to give athletes a free pass on some things.

Of course this is not every player -- there are notable exceptions. I am generalizing here FYI.

Still, it all has to be a little confusing for a guy like Cornacchia, who gets the biggest cheers when he's beating someone up on the ice and acting like a brute. Granted, for whatever he did on that airplane, Cornacchia has to take personal responsibility.

But in some ways, we as a society and as people involved with the Blades, we might have to take a little responsibility, too. If so many people saw Cornacchia's behavior at a Christmas party -- why didn't anyone say anything? Maybe they did, and I just don't know about it ...

Now, Cornacchia is playing more hockey as his trial awaits. I know athletes are valued #1 for their athletic ability. That's why they're paid, admired, etc. But I'd like to see them valued as people, as well. Maybe the best thing for Cornacchia is to play hockey and get his mind off everything else right now. Maybe the best thing would be immediate alcohol or anger management treatment -- away from the heavy drinking, violent atmosphere of pro hockey.

Honestly, I don't know. I'm glad someone else is making these tough decisions, and not me. My contact with Cornacchia has been nearly 100 percent positive -- so I can't personally vouch for any of the ill behavior others have seen. But there does seem to be a pattern of a young man who might need some help. Hopefully, however it turns out, things get better for him, and for the team in general.

They can't get much worse, to be honest.

Interesting blog AB. My opinion is that Cornacchia is a human being first and he should go to treatment. First he may actually get some help and second it sure can't hurt for court. Now with that being said, of course the old rule applies, he has to realize that there is a problem and he needs to want to fix it. I would say with the party incident and now the plane incident, treatment should be a top consideration. Next you have to take the team into consideration. A problem like this could very well fester and suck the life right out of the locker room. From what was said on the other blog, Fleming saw his actions at the party and maybe this is something CB was unaware of and I would imagine it is only a matter of time before he does hear about it. Next thing to kick around is, if this did not happen on a plane would we even be discussing it? I think we would throw it around for a day or two and then move on.

Well Angela I can finally say to you BRAVO on your new blog!! Well written, well said!

As to the Christmas Party incident the coaching staff was there and knew all about what went down. (On going issue for years about wanting to be one of their buddies and still expecting the players to respect him as the head coach, you can't have it both ways) The "bloody nose incident" was after "The Angry Young Man" pulled an earlier temper tantrum ...David Cornacchia has serious "Anger Management Issues" which when liquor is added his personality becomes combustible.

What happened Thursday night was a personal tragedy and in no way represents the Blades Organization BUT how the Blades Organization handles the repercussions is now in question. He should have been suspended until the situation was dealt with (like what was done with the P'Cola players after their incident at The Cottage<--handled properly). This is not a situation of IF he IS guilty but HOW guilty he IS and that makes all the difference. If the ECHL/Blades Organization will up hold a suspension from a college hockey league when a young player makes a minor personal mistake, only possibly causing harm to himself but then lets another player who not only is accused of assaulting people and exposing himself in public but inconveniencing ALL the other passengers on that plane from reaching their finally destination due to his ill behavior then that is where the ECHL/Blades Organization deserves a HUGH BIG BLACK EYE! (for condoning his behavior) Shorthanded bench be damned! The Blades play of late has been so questionable one more player benched would not have had any effect on the outcome of last night's game even thou he scored a goal, if not him then someone else would have.

Question...If next time I am at Germain Arena, if I decided to buy and drink 7 to 8 of those $6.00 beers, and as a result, slapped an usher, head-butted the guy sitting next to me in section 116, and then drop my pants for the crowd, would CB allow me to return to the arena until I was proven guilty in a court of law? Or do you think they would ban me not only from the Blades games, but all events at Germain?

#5 Posted by hambling on December 30, 2007 at 6:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well Blades are on the ice and it is sad that the focus is still on one team member's action rather than the efforts of the others. I agree with all of you actually, it is a sad incident and it is getting so much play in the media, it is going to be hard for him to turn it around. He does need help and he may want to think about getting it sooner than later if it means that the court might be even a little more lenient. But I am just thankful that I don't have to make those decisions- does he play or not, is he guilty or not, should he be dropped by the league or not. I think most people would say he was a great guy until alcohol was added and I will say AGAIN, I have seen some of the same behavior (although to a much lesser degree) from some nearby fans. I know the debate will continue but I just hope we can focus on the many good actions of the Blades and forget this one bad action of one. He will certainly have to face it in time-even MFH isn't that good.

Also if you're wearing that "Freakin' Flyer" jersey when you drop your drawers no one would notice cause they would all be laughing at your jersey...hahahaha

Interesting comments to read about Cornachia. I honestly dont know what to say. I have always believed in the innocent untill proven guilty aspect of the law. However It sure seems as though we have a real ugly situation here. It will be real interesting to see how this all plays out for sure. It could define the Blades in the eyes of many. Meanwhile the Blades are holding on to a slim 4-3 lead tonight can we please hold a lead tonight? PLEASE!

BHF, my point was, how far would CB take the "Innocent until proven guilty" line.

Indeed Cornacia is innocent until proven guilty from a legal standpoint, but there are consequences in other aspects of life, that happen when a person is accused of illegal acts. (fair or not).

Well, congrats Glads folks on a good win tonight. Especially since they were so shorthanded, it's gotta make the win even sweeter. Pilots had 4 games in 5 nights and were gassed. The Blades had a long road trip and looked tired too but that's when the Blades talent prevails.

Well Well, Corny. It's a travisty that the Blades orginazation has not suspended this guy. Everyone has spoken of the Wirll and Lisabeth instance and someone even posted the article on Sullivan. The difference is, these two organizations acted swiftly and decisively, and more appropriately they did the right thing. The Blades orginaization has not. This guy commeted a FEDERAL offense and he's still playing. Lizabeth and Wirll got in a bar fight and Sully dropped his drawers, both are inexcusable offenses and were dealt with.

Im disgusted with the Blades orginization for not doing the right thing and you guys should be too. It's your team and they represent your community.

They can't release Cornacia because they can't find anyone to replace him except maybe a mens league player or a fireman.

#31 Posted by centerice on December 31, 2007 at 12:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Let's clarify a few things on Lisabeth, Wirill and Sullivan. P'coal dealt with it terms of dumping the players to another team. Sullivan dropped his pants at a game I believe, was suspended by the league and then his team dumped him. Each team handles their problems different and one way over another does not make one better than the other. Evidently the Blades organization and the PLAYERS feel they should support him at this time and that is what they are going to do. And again, you cannot say there are federal charges against him because NO charges have been filed yet. And the last I heard there has not even been a court date set.

Remember last year when Baum was suspended for racial remarks? As soon as the incident happened, Texas fans started saying and some even said they heard it themselves that Baum dropped the N word. Now after the Blades came back to town, Baum served his suspension what Baum REALLY said came out and it wasn't the N word. Heck you have a hand full of bloggers that was accused of the same thing at a Texas game and that never happened. Until there are formal charges and more information this team is choosing to support the player. They are not taking the dump the player, problem goes away route. Here is an article from P'cola with a quote from Bittner and the players stance.

#33 Posted by BUSSYFAN on December 31, 2007 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Maybe there is a difference between the above mentioned players and Corncacchia. All of the players above were on "company time" if you will. Sullivan and Baum's incidents happened at the arena. Wirll and Lisabeth were on a team road trip. Cornacchia was on his off time. Maybe the team/league can't do anything until this is settled with the Feds. Would the players union allow them to take any action against him?

#34 Posted by STG on December 31, 2007 at 2:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

NHF based on that article it's only fair that we go after J.B. for sticking up for his teammate. <rolls eyes>

Apparently the flight crew and two doctors were treating a passenger that had become unconscious when Cornacchia started to act up. If that's true and he kept the crew from performing their duties I'm not so sure he's going to get off lightly with this.

AB
You mentioned:

" As far as the drinking incidents -- well, we all know that the majority of the players (probably the majority of athletes, really) are pretty heavy drinkers. "

I'd tend to disagree since serious athletes realize what alcohol does to their bodies and how it effects peak performance. But you are around these guys so I give you the nod.

"Looking down" well said with the antics and the "lets turn the other cheek" attitude, along with the play lately, Looking Down is so very appropriate.

Very disappointed with the way the Cornacchia situation was handled and the message it sends to the community and to the fans. Bounce him outta here or at the very least suspend him pending an investigation or outcome. Happens to teachers, policemen, etc. I have no tolerance for idiotic and childish behavior.

Very disappointed in Mr. Brush and the coaching staff if they were at the alledged holiday party incident and nothing was done.

My rant is done....Enough said.

Like I said before when you have to turn to mens league players and firemen to fill roster spots something is wrong in Bladesville. When your Afiliates take players from you and then send players to other teams something is wrong in Bladesville.

Pink Slips, Petitions, and Irate Fans.. Oh My!.. Its Just another Night at WesBanco

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Years Eve, 12/31/07

One New Years Eve meant certin victory for the Wheeling Nailers, no in 2005 (3-2 L to the Trenton Titans), a game that remind me so much of last night its uncanny. Then there is 2006, again the Nailers blow a lead and but this time salvage a point in an Overtime Loss to Trenton.. and now its 2007, Wheeling has a 2-1 lead in the third pd, playing their best hockey in this month (aside from when they won 3-2 over Cincy on 12/15). But yet, the lead slips away, and the Dayton Bombers rally, much like the 2005 Titans to a 3-2 victory in front of an increasingly hostile crowd. What's the common demonator in all this.. Glenn Patrick was the head coach in all three games

Before the game even begun, the fans were livid, and after a 5-2 loss to the Johnstown Chiefs.. fans began to think.. One fan made a about 50 signs that said "Pink Slip for Patrick" and handed it out to fans, and after every Dayton goal fans held it up. There was one fan who had a petition going around calling for Patrick to resign immediatly, threating a fourth season under Patrick would result in mass season ticket holder defections, some fans after 16 years wouldnt comeback to another game with Patrick as coach. And yet there also several others with Paper Bags over their heads the entire game, even when the Nailers were winning.

The Fanbase has grown sick of Head Coach Glenn Patrick, the team has won once in the past 18 games (1-17-1), and has one win the the entire month of December at (1-15-1), and every game Coach just stands there, comments of "It's not time to push the panic button yet" and "were working hard, but we cant get the bounces" have worn increasingly thin on the most loyal of season ticket holders and last night's although, other then boos when announced he was head coach, these silent protests had to have struck a chord some where. Case in point, it was Sean Collins doing all the talking to the media after the game, and he is just as upset as all the fans in the losing streak, but Coach Patrick refused to talk to the media.

This is as its bad as its gonna get, before things turn even uglier then they are now. If something the Brooks Bros. have heard the calls, and its hard not to, and they do make a change, It could save the season, but if they wait, or do nothing.. they will lose a signfigant portion of the fanbase.

To the Nailers team, I live and die with you guys every game, and last night might have been one of the toughest losses this season. Hopefully you guys can get a new coach in there, and right the ship.

It Is Official Glen Patrick Canned As Coach

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PATRICK FIRED!!!! The Brooks brothers grew a set! Could Nick Vitucci be introduced Wednesday?
On a small island in the Caribbean there is a whisper of happiness!!! After last night being told off by a Patick fan ripping my bag off and throwing it away and being called a dummy. The he hides behind a little 2 year old girl when confronted. I won't be at another game this year because I'm going back to the Caribbean till August but GOOD LUCK BOYS!

Utilize it, folks

#83 Posted by CSA on January 1, 2008 at 10:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I feel your pain centerice.
The Stingrays have 7 players in Hershey and 2 players injured. We had to get a mens league player and a Target employee just to have 13 skaters and 2 goalies. The Target employee and the mens league player can't make the road trip, the injured players are going to be out for a while and it's not looking good as far as getting anyone sent down from Hershey anytime soon.

On the bright side, the Stingrays players have plenty of room on the bench.

Players from Bako did somewhat the same thing as the Blades just did, 3 of them were fined. But bottom line, the Blades did not come out to play this game hence the 3 goals and they really have nobody to blame but themselves

CSA why are you cluttering the blog with stuff from IntotheBoards that has NOTHING to do with the Everblades? People from hear read that board too.

After 4 games against the 2 teams playing as hard as they can to AVOID having to go to the playoffs this season, and coming away looking like they did, I say the bags on the head don't sound so bad.

Is it time for GF to begin talking about Acountablity, yet?

CSA...

We could all talk till were blue in the face....believe me I have....the fact of the matter is untill the folks that will "buy thier tickets no matter what" and the "any hockey is better than no hockey" types and the "ice ballet" fans QUIT giving Mrs BRUSH thier MONEY then it will only get worse from here. And that could be said of the sport in general! There is a sucker born every minute and Bettman,Brush and the rest of the girls are cleaning up on that fact!!! Until it hurts thier wallet...they have NO REASON to quit screwing up the game. Funny thing...mess with the recepie for a soft drink and people go nuts and force them to go back to the "classic" formula..... completely and fundamentaly change the character of the best, and oldest sport with the most history and tradition in North America the and people just drool on themselves as the keep buying thier tickets...I dont get it....?

those that watched the winter classic today...anyone catch the intermission???<grin>

blades lay another egg...would be nice if they stopped digging themselves a hole in the beginning of games and then deciding to play when it's too late...obviously they can work it...ie. second period 25 shots--that's nuts!! ...still very agitated that kevin estrada is playing in victoria and mcnabb in texas...when are the blades going to sign an all-star caliber veteran?!?!

MeThinks the rest of the year, we go and watch hockey simply because it's there.

I have no aspirations of championships, etc with this current team. But at least I can watch some hockey....

CSA.... keep preaching, bro. to "H" with the naysayers. You've forgotten more about hockey than most of them even know.

Side note to CSA: my #24's are HERE, and beautiful. You will be jealous.

Canes may need a forward (maybe 2) from Albany for Friday, they have two more that are questionable.

#115 Posted by canes_sth on January 3, 2008 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Albany seems to like Elmira, they can go get players there.

IPMB post #3, first let me say this is in no way apersonal attack just facts, you were long gone from the party when the incident happened and there was no blood involved. and after what happened at the start of the season you should know better than to feed the fire of untrue BS.

post #4 Ham....you compaired apples to oranges...the real question is if you did that would your boss lit you return to work? yes you would be band from the arena(as Dave is from flyin American AL) but he was not band from work. now if he had done that at the arena i am guessing that he would in fact be gone.
just my opinion.
