Naples High School has 30 days to remove sign

Naples High School will have 30 days to remove the DeVoe Automotive Group sign from the back of its scoreboard because the size of the sign violates city codes, the city’s Community Director said.

Robin Singer wrote in a memo Tuesday to the Naples City Council that the city has had discussions with Collier County School District and Naples High School officials about the sign.

“I informed them that a notice of violation will be issued and they will have 30 days to remove the sign or the matter will be brought before the Code Board,” she wrote. “I had waited to issue the notice till after this meeting in anticipation that they may immediately comply.”

Singer said school officials are aware they may apply for a variance for the sign. According to Singer’s memo, school representatives said the sign had previously been located on the rear of the scoreboard, but had been removed following Hurricane Wilma.

The new sign is larger than the original sign, but in the same location. The previous sign mentioned the school and DeVoe, but the new sign mentions only DeVoe, according to Singer.

“Regardless of the content, the code provides that non-conforming signs that are more than 50 percent destroyed or damaged shall be removed and any new sign must comply with the code,” Singer wrote.

“The school property already exceeds the allowable number of permitted ground or pole signs and this new sign clearly exceeds the allowable 60 square feet of sign area.”

Singer wrote in her memo that she is inclined to grandfather in the existing ground signs and wall signs located at the school because they were installed prior to the issuance of the State Attorney General’s opinion. But she wrote she did not have the opportunity to discuss the matter with the City Attorney prior to the meeting.

Whew that was close. The school almost generated non-tax based money. We should celebrate by raising the sales tax again!

Not that a DeVoe sign DOESN'T belong on there- Mark played football for NHS, (can't remember if the big bro did, probably did)but it is JUST A BIT OSTENTACIOUS!! C'mon guys! How much money do you NEED? : ) : ) : ) This is only a friendly rib- it's OK to tone it down!!

There are too many other things we need to be worrying about in this town right now other than a sign! It is a little large and blue hahaha - however I'm all for companies that want to support our schools / kids. ----Doesn't Macy's have a large sign on their building - what's the difference? What about freeway signs? Do they comply with the code? oops I said to much

Devoe family has given unselfishly to the Naples community for decades. OSTENTACIOUS? Naples has more important issues with which to deal than a donation to the NHS athletic budget.

I'm a former resident of Naples, own acreage in CC, and played sports with Mark Devoe. Tear the sign down, and I hope he leases the Goodyear blimp to fly over Singer's house.

So, the problem is the size of the sign. And, there are too many signs at the school. Did some half-dead geezer/resident complain i.e. bring this to Singer's attention?

Perhaps "Heir" Singer and her white haired sign nazis would like to alleviate part of the problem by making a sizable contribution to the NHS athletic budget?

The school board may knuckle under but I doubt, legally, the removal of the sign can be enforced..school property is not subject to local anything, I think...

Rules are rules, so the issue should be a moot point . . . the sign has to be replaced with one that meets the law. What's the big deal, and why are people making such an issue over this? I agree, we have more pressing issues in Collier County . . . just replace the sign and play by the rules that are set for everyone.

Actually schools are subject to certain local codes including land use provisions. That is why the city is pressing this issue. There was a time when they were totally excempt form all local codes including fire safety but that has changed somewhat over the past few years.

Pesonally I don't care for the sign that much myself but the DeVoe family have been very generous to the communtiy and the city really has better things to concern themselves with.

Let's move on to something else.

WHY IS THIS GETTING SO MUCH ATTENTION BUT THIS ISN'T?
A stupid sign, who cares...affects very few people.
This affects the world.

could someone PLEASE tell me what it's like to have THIS as their main concern in life? God, I wish I could only care about such nonsense.

I still say, If the Devoe sign comes down.. Lets put a picture of Graham and Nick Sofos up there.. that would go over well?

OH WAIT.. he has already mooned the school

The Devoes' have always supported this community.. GET OVER THE SIGN...

I like that idea. Let's put a picture of Nick Sofos in his famous pose on the sign. That would really get the whole town talking.

A lot of people around here just need to get lives. Leave the sign alone.

Simply having some fun.

So, Bookworm9496 - rules are rules. Moot point? I suppose that you and the Community Director are now opposed to free speech? Is there a new rule? hmmm... everyone can go home now because rules are rules and will not be questioned. Thanks, Bookworm9496!

Replace the darn sign, buy cars from Devoe, and go watch the sunset together. Out!

Booooooooooooooo!
Creapy Code Enforcement Idiots

Yeah!
Naples High School.
Devoe Automotive Group.

Anyone who disagrees with this should send the Naples Sports Booster club $10
and buy their next car from Devoe!
