Rockford Grad:
Petit Theft is the correct term. It isn't "Petty Theft".
Lesson for the day is over.

In Rockford's defense...NDN is still the worst rag we've ever read. But it's OUR rag!

Rockford: your Rockford education (or lack thereof) is showing. If you're going to appoint yourself the "Spelling Police", I suggest you keep your head down and watch for "incoming".

Rockford Grad,
These are two, very highly respected Naples High School Grads who probably can't read, because they graduated from Devoe Automotive sellout school that is all about duh football game.
TOUCHDOWN!
They probably don't know about petit or petty either.
They will now....as they'll have to learn this lesson the hard way.
Get a reaaaaaaaaaalllly great attorney, to DAY.
Call in a May DAY.
What's that I heard you say?
DON't confuse things here native. LOL or is it ALD?
Whatever.

It is, however, Petty theft if you are stealing Heartbreakers CDs.

I thought it wasn't theft until the individual left the store?

This doesn't seem news worthy enough to be an item separate from the police blotter. Must be a slow news day at the Naples Daily Snooze.

Actually Rockford is correct, the charging document with read, Petit theft.

The proper LEGAL term, as stated in Miriam's dictionary of law, is "petty theft"...
So to all of you saying that Rockford is wrong, take a long look in the mirror, b/c it is you who are wrong...
Don't believe me? Look it up...
Too that end, the NDN allowed another inept "journalist" to write a story w/out knowing the proper termemalogy to properly report it, whose work was, in turn, edited by another inept editor hired by the NDN.
In sum, another fine job by the NDN...YA RIGHT!!!!

Per Florida State Statute;
(e) Except as provided in paragraph (d), if the property stolen is valued at $100 or more, but less than $300, the offender commits petit theft of the first degree, punishable as a misdemeanor of the first degree, as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(3)(a) Theft of any property not specified in subsection (2) is petit theft of the second degree and a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083, and as provided in subsection (5), as applicable.
(b) A person who commits petit theft and who has previously been convicted of any theft commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(c) A person who commits petit theft and who has previously been convicted two or more times of any theft commits a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Can we just all agree that the original term was "petit" (small, thank you very much), and it has become "Americanized" over the years into "petty", which, by the way, came from the original word?
Means ALL of you are correct. Next item?

wordofmouth I think the FL statutes state things pretty clearly about petit theft.
Thanks gcflycatcher!

How about parents of children should start raising these kids and be part of their lives? Don't blame the county on this one.('nothing to do in the county') Dont get me wrong, this place s/u/x, but it is the parents of "today" who need to learn how to raise children to respect others.
#18 Posted by swflsucks on June 13, 2008 at 8:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)
These so called "kids" are 18 & 19, they know right from wrong and chose to do as they wish. Secondly, why is it always the parents fault? Take 4 boys, all raised with the same parents and benefits, one is gay, another a drunk, the third a doctor and the fourth a jail bird. Now, explain to me how this is the parents fault. Guess what, sometimes people just do what ever they want, right or wrong, not EVERY decision made by an individual is a reflection on their upbringing. Do the decisions you make today reflect back to yours?

Absolutley!!! You are correct in some of your statement but how and who raises you is a drastic part of ones life.

Southernfilly,
EXCUSES!! There is nothing for TEENS to do here in Naples! I have a teen that works a FULL TIME JOB. There is plenty here if your kid doesn't want to work. The Beach is FREE. Hopefully some community service volunteering will fill up the rest of the summer for these two. And at 18 and 19 I believe these two would be considered ADULTS. Quit blaming the parents, they are probably out working so the kids can shop for clothes at Macy's.

#23 Posted by bugmenotdotcom on June 13, 2008 at 4:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Petit theft is defined in the law as the either the actual taking or the attempt to take another person’s property so as to deny them the use of the property or any benefit (such as the ability to sell or possess an item) that would flow from being in possession of the property. Petit thefts are further categorized in Florida law according to the monetary value of the property. Generally, petit thefts involving money, goods, or services that are valued at $100 or less are classified as second degree misdemeanors, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and up to sixty days in jail. In addition, if the property is not recovered, restitution for the item or items taken may also be part of the sentence. For items that are valued at more than $100, but less than $300, a charge of petit theft can be treated as a first degree misdemeanor. This more serious misdemeanor charge carries a maximum fine of $1000 and up to one year in the county jail.

Summer might be boring for kids here but that's no reason to steal. There's lots of things to do you just have to figure it out. Sorry, but when I was a teenager I did some 5 finger discounts and I was taught it wasn't right but did it anyway. Had nothing to do with my parents. If they had ever known I would have been grounded forever. They probably would have hauled me to the cops and made them lock me up. It was the thrill of not getting caught. Alot easier then with no cameras or security around. Don't think it has anything to do with their parents. Were the parents there helping them out? Did they have the getaway car waiting outside. Don't think so.
