Though their campaigns may not necessarily be rolling in the dough, the three candidates for Collier County sheriff certainly have raised oodles of cash.
Since entering the race in 2007, the three candidates for sheriff — local businessman Vinny Angiolillo, private investigator Victor Ortino and former Collier undersheriff Kevin Rambosk — combined have raised over $230,000.
On the other hand, with less than a month to go before the Aug. 26 primary, the three candidates combined have spent nearly $170,000 of that take.
The leader in both contributions and expenditures, by far, is Rambosk, who has raised $144,451.50 since announcing his candidacy in October. Rambosk raised almost half of that — $61,725 in cash and checks, $2,053.74 in in-kind donations — during the most recent reporting period, which ran from April 1 to July 18, according to reports released Friday by the Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office.
“I think it’s because people realize how important this decision is for the future of Collier County,” Rambosk said. “I think that represents an overwhelming support of my candidacy for the office of sheriff.”
Since announcing his candidacy, Rambosk has spent $86,503.68, the reports indicate.
Most of his money has been spent on traditional political expenditures, such as advertising, parade supplies, signs and stickers. He also paid $8,407 for a qualifying fee and $453.61 on costumes for a masquerade, the report said.
“It costs money to campaign,” Rambosk said. “When you consider the fact of mailings and TV and radio and printing, those are substantial costs. This is the way it’s done.”
Since announcing his candidacy in March 2007, Ortino has raked in $68,787.83, according to reports. During the most recent reporting period, Ortino brought in $7,400 in cash and checks, $1,509.72 in in-kind donations, and loaned his campaign $4.052.94.
Ortino has spent $63,250.75, reports said.
When asked if it concerned him that Rambosk has out-raised him by more than two to one, Ortino said “a little bit, but not a lot.”
“I’ve seen other races where people have triple the money and didn’t win,” he said. “Two things are real important in an election. One is money. The other is votes. I think I’ve got him in votes. And $70,000 in this economy ... is not bad.”
Ortino has spent his campaign cash on pretty traditional items as well — signs, T-shirts, stickers, mailers.
“I feel really good about the campaign,” he said.
Through March, Angiolillo hadn’t reported any contributions or expenditures. However, since then he has raised $19,426.06 and spent $18,148.14.
But one thing stands out about Angiolillo’s contributions; they all came from one person — himself.
“I don’t feel that by raising funds that you’re properly campaigning for the votes of the community,” Angiolillo said. “Just because everybody does it doesn’t make it right. I’m not like most people. I feel if you get contributions from people, it’s either a contribution because they want something from you later on, or it taints your view on the issues.”
Angiolillo said that people have offered him donations, but he has turned them down.
“I haven’t spent any spent any money with the Naples Daily News except buying a newspaper,” Angiolillo said. “Kevin Rambosk has spent $12,000 or so. ... The question ability throws a big red flag out there. Does the Naples Daily News, because they are receiving funds from the Kevin Rambosk campaign, report things properly?”
While Angiolillo only has one donor, both Ortino and Rambosk have hundreds.
Throughout the hard-fought campaign, Ortino has claimed many deputies are unhappy with the current administration, and that Rambosk would be more of the same. Still, Rambosk has received donations from dozens of current Sheriff’s Office employees.
According to reports, Ortino has received contributions from only one self-identified law enforcement officer. He said that many deputies who say they support Rambosk, whose names Ortino won’t reveal, are actually planning on voting for him.
“They said ‘Vic, I’ve contributed money and I wear a sticker and I am even wearing a shirt, but that does not mean I’m supporting him,’” Ortino said. “If they supported me and I don’t win, they’d be ousted, harassed or demoted.”
Rambosk, who has been endorsed by Sheriff Don Hunter, said no one would be punished for supporting Ortino or Angiolillo.
“This is America,” Rambosk said. “You can support and campaign for whoever you feel is the best qualified candidate, and you should.”

WOW! Kevin Rambosk...That certainly is a lot of money. What a great campaign he is running to generate that much buzz!
I do find that limo driver amusing.

WOW thats a HUGE difference for local elections and really shows the solid support Rambosk has. And it shows he has had it all along. Great job Kevin.

Since Ortino admitted it I will too...Rambosk is really outshining Vic and Vinnie. But I still like that Vinnie guy and think he is running a dynamite grassroots campaign. Vinnie don't give up, hang in there and consider running again.

I am amazed that the NDN didn't report on Ortino using compaing funds to pull records on Rambosk and Jordan. I guess they are not one sided after all. i guess that throws all the Ortino's supporters theories out the window. The NDN covers up things for everyone.

“I feel really good about the campaign,” Ortino said.
Your disorganized band of misfits and CCSO rejects and your own mental errors at every forum make you feel good? You're a mess and so is your campaign.

He's an embarassment, not only to his supporters, but to all Collier County residents and Republicans. Denounce Ortino on Aug. 26! Vote for Kevin Rambosk, a man of integrity, good will and professionalism.

If the former undersheriff who was forced to resign or get into trouble with the feds is such a fine upstanding person with plenty of backers, then where were the signatures needed to qualify instead of WASTING $8,000? Also, what about the cover-up of why Freeman really left? At the Golden Gate debate, I heard a few people wearing the outed former undersheriff's shirts that said they either hadn't made up their minds or were not voting for him but if they didn't wear the colors, they were in trouble. I also know a few who know they will get fired if they don't publicly support him. Just wait, time's a coming...for change and that change will be VICTOR ORTINO.

I truely believe in democracy but for Sheriff Hunter to say that there would be no ramifications for speaking out AGAINST Rambosk within the sheriffs department is not what we have heard from sheriffs within!!!!!!!!

If Ortino is a P.I. then why doesn't he know what is going on right in his own home? I read in another comment yesterday that his daughter is using drugs and her profile pic. on myspace shows her holding a hooka pipe, is this correct? Or is this dirty tactics by the Rambosk supporters? If this is true, How can we expect him to run the SO and rid CC of the drug pushers if he can't do it at home. Not that I am to impressed with the other two candidates either.

#23 Posted by plainlogic on July 29, 2008 at 8:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Allupolitcal,
Victor Ortino told the truth about his daughter. She is not using drugs. She has drug tests to prove it. A hookah pipe is nothing more than a tobacco pipe. She is 20 years old. She smoked the hookah pipe, much like someone smokes a cigarette, at a place I believe it was Tampa. She's old enough to smoke, that's her choice. She is an explorer with Fort Myers Police Department. I personally believe the former undersheriff who was forced to resign knew the information put out by his supporters was incorrect. Victor Ortino will answer your questions if you have more. Please call him to discuss the issue or go to a debate, tonight at 6 at the Hilton and Wednesday from 4 to 7 at Politics in the Park. I hope this answers your questions. To put someone's daughter through this is, in my opinion, poor taste. The other candidate's supporters are trying to detract from the fact that there is cover up going on in the CCSO and Victor Ortino wants to rid the agency of that. Any deputy/civilian employee who does what is right, will have no problem with Victor Ortino being sheriff. Too bad the sheriff's employees cannot publicly support him because they know if they do, they will be harassed and possibly fired.

Hey Ryan, read your article, but you must have overlooked the part about the defrocked undersheriff getting about $30K from Kraft construction fundraiser. I guess they don't need to worry about those illegal immigrants on Collier county jobs. The undersheriff has their rear covered, just like you do at the NDN.

Thank you mothernature for your answer and I will try and attend one of the debates. I figured it was dirty little politics by the Rombosk supporters. You just convinced me that Ortino is the best man for sheriff. If you have to resort to these type of antics their is something wrong or you have something to hide.......
GO ROMBOSK! AS FAR FROM COLLIER AS POSSIBLE

Hah007,
I wonder what those endorsements mean now that they know the sheriff's office is covering up or not reporting sex crimes from within?
The supporters of former undersheriff who was forced to resign because of violations of the Hatch Act, a law, cannot get anything of subtance on Victor Ortino, so they go on the attack and twist the facts. Go to the debate tonight and Wednesday. Ask Victor Ortino about the facts. He will respond to you personally. Try that after a debate with the former undersheriff. He typically does not stay around long enough for regular, law-abiding, voting residents to ask any questions that may not have been asked during the debates. Victor Ortino, however, welcomes any questions from the public.

The quotes in the article stand for all that needs to be stated;
“They said ‘Vic, I’ve contributed money and I wear a sticker and I am even wearing a shirt, but that does not mean I’m supporting him,’” Ortino said. “If they supported me and I don’t win, they’d be ousted, harassed or demoted.”
Rambosk...said no one would be punished for supporting Ortino or Angiolillo.
“This is America,” Rambosk said. “You can support and campaign for whoever you feel is the best qualified candidate, and you should.”
If you had the pleasure of knowing Kevin, his wife, kids, and his supportive and loving sister the way I have over the years you would know that Mr. Rambosk is not the type of Commanding Officer that would hold retribution in place of loyalty to any on his force. Kevin's career was built in the Civil Service System that has no room for negative political action only the merit based system.
While this negative idea of retribution may be true in other elections of this sort, again I say; you must know the man and what he stands for. He's too far above the pettyness of an action of this sort.
August 26th is election day - VOTE KEVIN RAMBOSK FOR THE FUTURE OF COLLIER COUNTY LAW AND ORDER!

The ex undersheriff might not demote, harass or fire an employee for having the guts to come out & say they are not for him but for another candidate he'll just have his buddy Jim Williams do it & better yet do it while Hunter still in office. Good luck we all remember the Hunter/Koors election & what happened to many who supported Koors.

Toesmom, this is very true. We have former Collier county deputies scattered all over the State of Florida working for other agencies that were pushed out after so much as being friends with other political oponents. If you dont think it will happen, then wake up and smell the flowers. As soon as anyone at the SO gets a mind of his/her own, they're pushed out. Victor Ortino has promised that the only person who is sure to go is Williams. We, at the SO can not wait for that to happen.

That's funny. I know a career LEO and local hero who openly supported Koors in 92 and was always critical of somethings that Hunter does and has always been very outspoken about it. And you know what is funny, he still to this day works at the Sheriff's Office. Not to mention in a very cushy 9-5 job that he is qualified for and does a great job at. Hunter actually

As for the website stated above it's Jake Walker who works for the CCSO & is on the ex undersheriff's campaign. He only added the school board cause people were suspicious of him especially when he was advertising for donations & saying he was a Non profit corporation & the IRS said he wasn't. It's not non partisian they are lying. If they really were about integrity they wouldn't have Jake Walker handling this for he's been in trouble at the CCSO for fixing a ticket. It's a closed file therefore public record for anyone to go look at.

Toesmom.
Who cares who published the website or what their agenda is. The facts are that Victor Ortino was FIRED frim the FHP for time card fraud.
He was not reinstated because he didn't do it but because he was never taught that while it was the norm it wasn't the correct procedure. But someone was smart enough to figure it out when Christopher Knight, the most recently retired director of FHP, who was a trooper at the time blew the whistle on illegal pratices.
When Victor was reinstated he didn't work the entire time and probably only returned to use up the vacation that he took after his reinstatement.
He then resigned, was told to report on a Thursday to Punta Gorda to return his equipment and vehicle and REFUSED with gross insubordination. He then did what he wanted to do and dropped off his equiptment at the Naples station the day before.
He states he was a a Trooper for 3 years. I say that's a LIE!
He states he has 30 years law enforcement experience. That is a LIE!
He has management experience that isn't even equivilant to a manager at McDonalds and he wants me to vote for him? I think NOT!
Then because he doesn't have the qualifications to be Sheriff he wants to attack the very man that does by digging and trying to pin anything that goes wrong at the SO on an upstanding, honest, career LEO and public servant.
Forget Victor Ortino because he is a cheat, a liar and for the very fact that the way he is running his campaign is the very thing that is wrong with politics in the US today!
And before all you Ortino cronies say "Oh there is the Rambosk Campaingers . . ." "Oh there's a CCSO employee at his desk . . ." like 5 year olds in a play ground fight I say this . . . I am neither and you all should be ashamed of yourselves for being so easily taken by such a poor swindler.

Oh, Michael, you mean this Chris Knight who was FORCED TO RESIGN for falsification of records? Yes, he has a real clean background. And, this goes to show, education and all the accreditations and training doesn't make someone the best person for the job. I've included the link to this article and others about Knight.

From the Ledger newspaper:
Head of Florida Highway Patrol Resigns
Inquest concludes Col. Christopher Knight was negligent in duties, falsified records.
By Joe Follick
Ledger Tallahassee Bureau
Published: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 2:24 a.m.
TALLAHASSEE | The head of the Florida Highway Patrol resigned Monday following a six-month investigation that concluded Col. Christopher A. Knight was negligent in his duties and falsified records.
Knight, 50, was not available for comment Monday evening. FHP spokesman Maj. Ernesto Duarte confirmed Knight's resignation Monday evening.
Details of the investigation that led to Knight's departure were not available.
But word of the inquiry spread throughout the agency this summer, and even led to an unusual July e-mail from Knight to FHP employees.
"Rumors throughout the Patrol range from me being placed on administrative leave, to being asked to resign, to being dismissed. NONE OF THOSE RUMORS ARE TRUE … To continue to perpetuate these types of rumors can have negative effects on me personally, our division, and the entire department," the email said. "A simple request: Please discontinue the rumors and concentrate on our mission of keeping highways safe."
Knight, a graduate of Venice High School and Florida State University, joined the FHP in 1981 as a trooper in southwest Florida. He was named FHP's director in 2001.
With FBI training and a slew of commendations, Knight steadily rose through the agency. After stints in Miami, Bradenton and Palatka, he ran the agency's training academy and oversaw a North Florida region.

Knight was permantly removed. And, if you read, it says further investigation is warranted on Knight. Talk to the troopers. They'll tell you how he was, especially some of those from the northern sector. How about powers that be who cover up an alleged felony criminal complaint?

Around the issue around and around! Talk about your canidate for ONCE! Who cares that Knight is in trouble now! Victor lied while at FHP!
YOU'RE CANIDATE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO MANAGE A MCDONALDS MUCH LESS THE CCSO!
This is not about Knight, or Rambosk or Hunter or Freeman! If Victor Ortino would talk about himself and his plans rather than other canidates alleged short comings maybe the voters would respect him!

let's play your game mothernature!
You missed this quote!
"But some rank-and-file troopers didn’t like Knight being booted for what they saw as an oversight and that the resignation could cause a ripple effect on morale.
“If you’re going to tell me a date on a document is going to ruin everything he has done, that’s pretty thin,” said William Smith, a veteran Miami-based trooper and president of the FHP chapter of the Police Benevolent Association. “To me it looks like somebody wants to get rid of you.”"
He was canned because he filled out some paper work wrong. Just like ORTINO! At least Knight didn't do it to steal money like Ortino.

Mr. Hunt, If you would go to the debates or take the time to call the candidates, especially Victor Ortino, he would take the time to personally answer any and all questions you may have. He always stays after so constituents may have that chance. I cannot put words into his mouth on this blog. I do know that Mr. Victor Ortino is a very honest person and will be direct in his answers. We have all done wrong, we all have skeletons, but to call someone a liar, that's despicable to me. If there was any proof Mr. Ortino lied, as you accused him of doing, I'm sure one of the other candidates would have proof of it by now. Please show proof. Mr. Hunt, I agree with the democratic process and people being allowed to voice their opinions. I'm glad this forum exists. It gives many deputies who have not been able to have a voice for years to have one. It gives many people time to read the facts, some of which I have posted, and decide for themselves what is true and what is not true. I'm sure Mr. Hunt, you will agree with me that not a single living person on Earth has not made bad choices in their lives, but as time goes on, people mature and make better decisions usually. unfortunately, not all can do that. Unfortunately, sometimes power corrupts. Fortunately there is a candidate out there who wants to be as open as possible in dealing with the citizens who pay his salary. Fortunately there is a candidate out there who wants transparency. That candidate is Victor Ortino. He doesn't want cover ups to be the way. He wants the citizens to know where their dollar is going. And, he wants to have honest, hard-working deputies and civilians stay on. He has made it clear he will not come in and randomly fire people. He knows it will take months to properly learn his employees. If a deputy/civilian does their job and doesn't break the law or rules, then they definitely have a job. Mr. Ortino will listen to what everyone has to say. Give it a try. Talk to him. You will find he is very personable. Thank you for your time Mr. Hunt. I hope to see you at the debate tonight.
