Collier residents have their say early on candidates

Please download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, or enable JavaScript for your browser to view the video player.

As 9-year-old Zoe Howe rushed through the Norris Center Wednesday night, she couldn’t help but be happy.

“It’s like Halloween all over again,” she said, a stack of business cards in her hand. “There is candy everywhere.”

Candy, T-shirts, pinwheels, balloons and even nail files passed into the hands of voters as Democratic and Republican candidates for local, state and federal office made their pitches.

The candidates were there not only to talk to voters but to win their votes in the straw poll that was part of the Politics in the Park event, which was sponsored by the Collier Building Industry Association, the Naples Area Board of Realtors and the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce.

Though presumptive presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama didn’t attend the event, they had supporters chatting them up. McCain supporters had their own booth as well and distributed yard signs to those interested in taking one home.

“We encourage our members to be civically conscious,” said Brenda Talbert, executive officer of the Collier Building Industry Association. “Obviously, we are interested in things that will allow people in our industry to stay and work, and get more work. But we also want the public to be well-informed and not vote for the first name they see.”

Children were also allowed to participate in the straw poll.

“It is very important to allow children to see how the Democratic process works. It is important they understand their civic responsibilities at an early age,” said Talbert.

Rick MacClugage, a candidate for Collier County School Board District 2, said he enjoyed meeting the voters.

“There’s a lot less pressure (than in a forum). It is a lot more personal,” he said. “They have a lot of good questions.”

Collier County School Board District 2 incumbent Kathleen Curatolo said the thing voters wanted to know from her was how potential budget cuts and layoffs could affect their schools. She said those comments really make the issues personal for her.

“People asked me not to vote for privatization of the custodial workers because they know their custodian, and their custodian knows their child’s name,” she said. “That is important.”

For some candidates, the event was a chance to educate the public.

“Many people don’t understand that the public defender is an elected position,” said Kathy Smith, a Southwest Florida Public Defender who is seeking reelection to her seat. “We haven’t had an uncontested race in 38 years.”

Challenger Rex Darrow also spoke with many people about electing a public defender.

“We have a perfect storm that is going to hit this office,” he said. “We are going to have a budget cut and we are going to have more and more people who qualify for our services.”

But not everyone was a candidate. Several people at the forum came to support one of the 10 amendments that Florida voters will see on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

The group Fairness for Families passed out literature encouraging voters to say no to Amendment 2, which it said would end benefits and protections for domestic partnerships.

“It is being painted as the amendment against gay marriage, but this would end benefits for domestic partnerships across the state,” said Frances Billker, a member of Fairness for Families. “I think people are open to learning. We have had a lot of people take our literature to read and think about. That’s why we are here.”

Representatives from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a national initiative to educate voters on issues that will affect women, passed out literature discussing McCain’s record on issues pertaining to women, including his opposition to equal pay legislation and his opposition to restoring family planning services to low-income women.

“We want to raise awareness about John McCain’s record and to sign up people for the Million Strong Pledge, which will elect a president that is pro-choice and will make women’s health a priority,” said Kim Slote, a representative of the Action Fund. She added the Planned Parenthood Action Fund endorsed Obama.

Voters also got a chance to test the new voting machines, which will be used for the first time during the Aug. 26 primary. Voters have to fill in circles indicating the candidate of their choice on paper ballots and then run them through machines to cast their votes.

“They are a throw back, but I am happy there were no chads,” said Jim Wall, who was campaigning for Collier County District 4 School Board candidate Joe Paterno. “They are easy to read, but I think the process is going backwards rather than forwards.”

Kevin it was a pleasure seeing you at the forums this week. Thank you for talking with me and my kids today and congrats on your many successes.

great turn out for this event. its nice to see so many people interested in this year's election. A lot of young people seem to be turning out. I met Mr. Rambosk today and he was nice and is very qualified to be our sheriff. He's got my vote.

Did we consider the number of people the defrocked underheriff bused in to be sure he won the straw vote?

You Ortino people are so predictable. Especially, you, Wily!

YOU LOST TWICE. You'll lose again.

Rambosk for Sheriff!!!!!!!!!!!!

They bussed CCSO employees and their kids on 2 Naples Trolley buses, and the children are allowed to vote in a straw poll. I'm sure that all the families had a nice outing, but I don't think this had much to do with what is going to happen on election day.

The landslides keep getting bigger and bigger in Rambosk's favor. August 26 will be a huge win for Rambosk.

Loved the trolley. My kids loved the trolley.

Rambosk for Sheriff on August 26!

Vinny more than doubled his votes from the last straw poll! Way to go dude!

Ortino lost votes. Whoa dude. Time to rethink the plan. Oh thats right, there isnt one.

#8 Posted by breezyshine on July 30, 2008 at 10:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Like what is it with the former cop, the one who resigned making all those captains and their families go and stuff the straw vote for him? That's like so unfair and like the public knows what they are trying to do. I really like the way Ortino was working the crowd. He is so smart and knows a lot and he really wants positive change in that department.

Ortino is the man for sheriff. Way.

Get your facts straight. There was only one trolly to celebrate the upcoming victory for Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. We all drove our own vehicles. Yes, the kids as well as the adults had a great time on the the trolly. Too bad your campaign couldn't come up with a great idea like that.

#10 Posted by lawyerboy on July 30, 2008 at 10:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The Ortino campaign, like Ortino himself, has no original ideas!

Way to go, Kevin Rambosk! Congratulations!

Diamondgrl, you just can't face the fact that you are all LOSERS! What excuse will your in the ground camp come up with next?

I think it was Vinny who gained ground not Victor.

#12 Posted by diamondgal on July 30, 2008 at 10:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hahaha. The paid mercenaries in the camp of the disgraced former undersheriff, who was forced to resign to avoid Federal prosecution for his violations of law, once again demonstrated for all of Collier County just why change is so terribly necessary at the sheriffs department.

It is indeed mind boggling that the commanders and lieutenants think they can run rough-shod over the voters in this county. Showing up, likely because they were compelled to do so, and ram rodding the straw ballot with another psuedo win for the forced to leave office incumbent.

The gall and elitism of it all. I know that the crowd there saw their actions for what they were. With supporters like that, with deputy sheriffs like that, truly, change is needed.

Ortino for sheriff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#13 Posted by W_Coyote on July 30, 2008 at 10:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tonight's straw poll was in the heart of the city of Naples, and everyone in attendance should know that no CCSO employees live within the trolley's route distance. Cardshark9, do you really think the trolley traveled all the way out to where the deputies can afford to live. I saw the trolley driving the streets of Naples trying to get Naples residents to come and vote. I guess it worked. I didn't see nearly as many deputies at this event as was at the Golden Gate event. Even so, Kevin Rambosk won handily by better than a 2 to 1 margin.

I'm waiting to see the ORTINO SMEAR MACHINE start with its negativity and personal attacks on Rambosk supporters.

Congratulations Vinnie, your support is increasing. I don't know you, but I have shaken your hand, an you seem to be a nice guy.

Kevin Rambosk is the most qualified and most ethical candidate. Congratulations Kevin for your victory.

#14 Posted by Estatesman on July 30, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My mind had been made up as far as the sheriff goes. I went there tonight to talk to a couple of commission candidates. While I was there I saw again the obnoxious and arrogant behavior by just about everyone in a grey and green shirt denoting their support for the former sheriff.

If there was any doubt at all in my mind, those guys erased it. I would not vote for that guy under any circumstances. He used to supervise those deputies and he can't get them to act civilized in public? How is he going to manage them on the job?

I am a Democrat and proud of it. And I will vote for ORTINO for sheriff. He may not have the college degrees of his opponent but he has clearly demonstrated he has the drive and commitment to succeed. A successful business owner, pilot, and believe me it takes more commitment to earn a 6th degree black belt than a masters degree. As for ethics the chris Freeman affair settled that for me. He was a top ranking deputy in the department during that mess and went along with the flow and did nothing to get an investigation going into the matter for sexual harrassment or sexual battery. Talk about corruption.

Every day the more I learn about him and the sheriffs department the more I tell everyone I know to vote for Ortino. I am on board.

Ortino for sheriff. Ortino for sheriff.
ORTINO
ORTINO
ORTINO for sheriff.

#15 Posted by nevercaredB4 on July 30, 2008 at 10:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You call Rambosk elitist, yet he is a man who started from humble roots. He earned his associates, bachelors, and masters degrees as he worked his way from patrolman, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and chief of police. His story strikes me as the opposite of elitism. Kevin Rambosk's life story is the very example of the American dream, work hard get an education and succeed.

Kevin, don't be dissuaded by the ORTINO SMEAR MACHINE. Campaigns without any original ideas always resort to trying to tear down the other candidate. Don't worry Kevin, the public sees the ORTINO SMEAR MACHINE for what it is, desperate.

We all know that the ORTINO SMEAR MACHINE will likely lodge some more shameful allegations in the coming days and weeks. We know that they are searching public records for anything they can spin into a controversy.

Kevin, we respect the fact that you have worked hard all of your life, and you have remained faithful to the community and to the profession.

#16 Posted by Estatesman on July 30, 2008 at 10:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I saw them too. In the trolley. They acted drunk or stoned or both. In the building and talking among themselves as they stood around it was the same old arrogance, narcissism, hubris. Such behavior is expected from college boys on spring break but not from deputys in public. It was disgusting.

The camp and crew of the ousted former deputy is so far gone and out of whach with the needs of our community that only new leadership will renew our sheriff office. I am so glad to hear that Democrats are siding with Ortino. It has been far too long since they had a voice in what should be a non-political office. I can imagine many of them might hold their nose as they vote for a republican, but vote for Ortino they are going to do. Maybe one day the Democrats will field a viable candidate themselves for the office.

And while those guys acted like fools and yucked it up Ortino was again showing what an intelligent, motivated, caring, concerned, capable and first class candidate he is. He worked the crowd, spoke the truth, and won many to his side. The other guy tried to work the crowd but he was awkward and obviously uncomfortable. As the majority has been saying, and with pride and good reason, Ortino for sheriff.

Ortino is the only real choice to continue the success in the department and bring about the needed positive change and new leadership perspectives to enhance service and maintain fiscal responsibility.

Ortino, you have won. Congratulations!!!

I heard County Commissioner on the Dave Elliot radio show this afternoon & he was talking about the straw vote that was going to happen today. He said they don't mean a thing cause anyone, any age, from anywhere, can vote even dogs & cats can vote. I thought that was funny. They don't mean anything people they are for fun.

Like did you read up there what that chick that copied my name is saying about me? Just shows again about the rude and crass behavior of those guys. Its like they think they should just like inherit the sheriffs department because they want it. Get real. Maybe she been in the tanning booth too long.

This is America not like China. I think they are getting desperate and angy because they see that Ortino is winning and has more support than that guy they support. Oh well I can take it. Besides the

New sheriff is ORTINO.

If you are going to lie on a public forum, at least make it a little bit hard to confirm. Every thing you have written has lost all credibility. Not that it had any to start with.

#22 Posted by native1457 on July 30, 2008 at 11:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Diamondgrl is right. Just as I have said before. The established incumbent, who was forced to resign to avoid being prosecuted for violations of Federal Law he had been committing for months, and his crew are desperate. They see the writing on the wall.

Ortino is going to be the new sheriff. After the last few public displays of childish arrogance, bad behavior and refusal to follow the rules set for the debates those that were undecided have moved to vote for Ortino and many of those who blindly fell into the incumbent trap have also moved to Ortino.

Ortino has this all but sewn up. The other guys know it. But their vile ad hominem attacks against the new sheriff, his family and supporters has certainly backfired. As well it should have.

The Chris Freeman mess is just one example of the inequity in accountability between the sheriffs department elite and the public. Just ONE such example.

You guys supporting the former undersheriff -- who was forced to resign to avoid Federal Prosecution due to his violations of Federal Law -- have crossed the line from desperation to sheer panic and hysteria. I thought I would laugh when that happened, but instead you have my pity.

Ortino IS the new sheriff. You know it. We know it. Your guy is done. It's over. Maybe if you had fought a clean and honest fight you would have had a chance. Again, you really do have my pity.

Ortino for sheriff! YES!!!!!!

who was the older Ortino woman wandering around taking photos and mumbling to herself? someone said her name was Mrs. Flower or something like that. Weird.

Glad to see the Rambosk team having fun while delivering their message of having the most qualified candidate out there for Sheriff. The trolley was an awesome idea.

Got to hand it to Kevin- he has a great business sense as well as all that law enforcement experience- with arrest powers, that is.

#24 Posted by jhumphreys29 on July 30, 2008 at 11:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The Ortino clan never lets up on the rude statements; calling the deputies mercenaries, drunk, stoned, obnoxious. You Ortino followers are really getting quite desperate. It is interesting that a man who wants to be the chief law enforcement officer in the county seems to have nothing but contempt for law enforcement officers. Ortino please have your supporters show some class and stop all the lying, false allegations, and childish name calling. I have a close relative that knows you personally. She says that this is the Ortino she knows. I know you can get wound up in the campaign, but you're starting to let it effect who you are. Be honorable and run and honorable campaign. Stop the baseless mudslinging.

Kevin's campaign clearly has more class and definitely more respect for other people.

#25 Posted by lucky13 on July 30, 2008 at 11:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am not a Deputy, spouse of a Deputy, nor do I know any candidates. I do know, that most everyone bloging on the subject is a Deputy or family of. That being said, these blogs are very ugly and are alittle disappointing . I would have hoped the campaign would stick to the Candidates and their qualifications and goals for the Department. What I know is that Rambosk has the more impressive credentials. I question why Mr Ortino is no longer with the state police. I have been around long enough to know, you don't just walk away from a Trooper job....the other gentleman having been arrested shades doubt for me on him.......but what do I know....////retired from Law Enforcement 1968-1991

#26 Posted by Bagpiper on July 30, 2008 at 11:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am not affiliated with Ortino or Rambosk like the majority of people who visit these blogs. Many of you are out on a agenda. Rightfully so, but sometimes it's over kill. These forums and events don't mean a thing. The majority of people who attend are those with an agenda.

I have sat back, absorbed all the "facts". I ignore all the three candidate's "blood relatives" bashing each other. Go ahead and continue though, I have a laugh at all of your comments. It's hilarious.

This is a non-biased view from which I gathered from the general public who are not affiliated with any of the candidates.

Most, not all, people do not want Rambosk because they fear the budget getting more out of control than what it is presently. Hunter has grown the budget much the same way our national leaders have done. People fear Rambosk will continue the foot steps Hunter has left behind.

With this said, people want Ortino because he is fresh meat and will bring new ideas to the table. ORTINO IS OPEN MINDED WITH A WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN, THINK, AND ACT. People will vote for Ortino because they do not want more of the present administations shadowing.

It's time for change. We've been hearing that on all levels of elections. The economy stinks. The working people want the elected officials held accountable. These are demanding times for all people.

Good Luck Mr Ortino in leading Collier County to a safe community with a budget we all can live with. Thank you for your efforts.

Once again it was a pleasure talking to Mr. Rambosk tonight. He is always so professional. I congratulate him on another victory.

I thought the supporters on the trolley were great. They looked like they were having fun while showing their support. Calling them drunk or stoned is just stupid. There were children and families on the trolley.

It just sounds like a lot of sour grapes from some very disappointed Ortino supporters.

Has anyone here bothered to actually read the Hatch Act? I read it, three times actually becuase it's written in legalese, and I really don't see how he violated it like all those obnoxious Ortino supporters say he did. I encourage everyone to actually read the Hatch Act and decide for yourself. Do not listen to what other people tell you.

And by the way, I was on the trolly with my wife and child and I do not work for the Sheriff's Office, nor did most of the occupants of the trolly that I was on. And none of us were brought in by Rambosk to vote for him. I must have missed that meeting, you paranoid wackos.

I listen to all the negativity being spread by the Ortino supporters and it really sounds like the ramblings of former deputies and criminals. Is that the kind of Sheriff that this community needs, one who's supporters are people that were fired or arrested. That's like when Kerry was endorsed by Bin Laden, just emberassing.

#31 Posted by mwyatt22 on July 31, 2008 at 6:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It is interesting that the Rambosk camp is being accussed of stuffing the ballot box so that he would look good. While standing in line I saw a man with his wife and children (Ortino supporters)waiting to cast their ballots, yes the children were voting. Realistically each candidate is going to try and get as many supporters to each event. What the straw ballot shows is that all of the candidates who won have a faithful following. Congratulations to everyone that won. Everyone needs to focus on who is better qualified to lead the Collier County Sheriff's Office into the future. Mr. Rambosk I have faith that you are the leader the Sheriff's Office needs. I would also like to thank all the men and women at the Sheriff's Office for the great job you do on a daily basis (deputies, dispatchers, admin staff etc. etc.) KEVIN RAMBOSK WILL BE THE NEXT SHERIFF OF COLLIER COUNTY.

Good job Julie Sprague ( school board candidate district 4)! Did you all know that Julie, a current 20++ CCPS teacher, will be taking a MAJOR PAY CUT if she is elected to the school board? How many other candidates are willing to do that? Most, if not all, have full time jobs and consider the school board to be a part time job! Julie has said that if elected, she will probably have to seek part time employment to help supplement her $34K school board salary! She has MY VOTE!

I am a resident of C.C. not affiliated with any of the candidates, nor do I work for or have ever worked for the CCSO. I'm not even related to any of the deputies as suggested by Bagpipe. I do know some of the deputies and not so much on a personal level. I can tell you that they are ready for change, not all the deputies are happy over the current administration.

I do support Ortino, but to call the deputies, mercenaries, drunk, high and obnoxious is uncalled for its dirty and its hitting below the belt.

Vote for whom ever you want to vote for, but enough with the insults and name calling for the people who took a sworn oath to serve, and to protect us and our community.

The elections have brought a lot of real issues concerning maintaining our great quality of life here in Collier County. School board candidates talking about pay and jobs, commissioners talking about taxes and roads and sheriff candidates talking about crime and traffic.

I agree with Rambosk that foreclosures are a very big concern. He has a plan he already set in place.

I am voting to keep the crime rate low in our community. I am voting for Rambosk.

What's scary is that Kevin Rambosk believes that the sheriff's department is "clearly" part of the judicial branch of government. What's REALLY scary is the fact that he is still the most qualified candidate to lead this department.
From the Florida Department of State website:
"The EXECUTIVE branch is the law-administering and law-enforcing branch of the government." (They put "Executive" in all caps, I didn't.)

Biomanogt: You have got to be kidding! She needs a second job to supplement her $34,000 yearly salary if she's elected to the school board? That's over $650.00 per week to work a few hours a week! If she can't manage on $34,000 a year salary, how can she manage the money that goes through the financing of the school? Perhaps she should stay in the school system as a teacher.

With the cost of living in Naples. I am sorry to live in Naples thats not a lot of money. With $34,000.00 a year you make about enough money to carry you broke butt home a week.

In order to live in Naples you would need to have everything payed for to make it on that amount. m puls ive bat

The school board from my hometown only receive a stipend of about $2,000 for the position. Collier County pays them more than most of the custodians, food service workers, bus drivers and attendants. Any of them would give their right arm to make that money.

#41 Posted by sunflower9284 on July 31, 2008 at 9:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Teachers can't live on #34K per year UNLESS:
1. his/her spouse is employed full time
2. he/she is still living at home with mom and dad
3. he/she is a "hobby" teacher- just wants something to do to keep busy while the other spouse is the principle bread winner ( and they are out there)
4. Mommy or Daddy is rich and they have bought you a home/condo to live in
I have been with CCPS for 35 years ( retired May 30th) and I see more and more young folks either leaving the profession because it is too expensive here or living somewhere ( Lehigh) else where things are cheaper. If you want to attract and keep quality educators, you'd better start treating them and paying them accordingly. For God's sake- the new Super makes $ 240K+/year and his 2 Dixie Chickees make $170+K/year! The governor of Calif makes LESS than our Super here in CCPS land! Check it out on the internet! The gov of Maine makes $ 75K/year- one of the lowest paid ones out there!

I see the regular Ortino bloggers are back. Hey, if the public and deputies were as outraged for change as these few constantly say, the people and deputies would show up to support him and donate money to his campaign. Since none of this is happening it just seems that these few same bloggers are waging a small, ineffective propaganda campaign. Desperation causes some to disconnect with facts and reality. Rambosk is the man.

Unfortunately, some people do need to be harassed because they do bad things. You should feel honored to live in a county with such a low crime rate.
My vote goes to Rambosk. A vote for continued success!

Vic will tell you anything to get your vote.

#24 who cares who was taking pictures? It was a public event & I saw lots of people taking pictures. Jamie from the CCSO is always taking pictures of campaign events during business hours when she's suppose to be on duty. Maybe someone should ask her is she's using a CCSO camera. It appears as thought the taxpayers are paying her & Briget to campaign for the ex-undersheriff. I've seen them at numerous events which occur on a weekday during business hours. Are they on duty at taxpayer expense? If so then they are in violation of the law.

What would happen if Ortino wins? Could it be the end to those cheerleaders sorrounding Rambosk at all those event. What will he do to administrators and high ranking officers? Would he clean house and fire those taking pictures, video, and posing to cameras on Rambosk's website. Rumor is that he will fire Williams the old man that runs their internal. I wonder if playboy Freeman will reapply to run the jail or to replace the old man Williams?

ww2vet -- Are you saying that you agree with a 6 year old girl getting arrested for having a lemonade stand?

How about the family from Ohio that was vacationing here and the mother was dragged down the steps and put in hand cuffs by an officer with her small children looking; did you know the officer went to the wrong house? (someone had called in a noise disturbance) and the officer falsified the arrest report. The family ended up hiring a private investigator and may still bring a civil lawsuit against the sheriff’s office. Not everyone has the funds to hire a private investigator and fight for justice -- I'm glad this family is fighting the system.

Did you read about the two high school girls that were chassed by 2 plain clothes officers in unmarked vehicles? The one girl was pushed to the ground. -----Who is training these officers?

How about the joke of an arrest of a man that took $.42 out of the fountain at the mall? Or -- the child that was bullied and made to do despicable things at the juvenile detention center, and it clearly showed on camera that the officer did not perform his scheduled checks on the kids. Yea - great crew –

I have lived in Naples for 20 years and I see how it’s going Waco -- law enforcement has gone wild and it's like the mob. If Ortino made a comment like that -- it tells me he knows that there are things going on -- and it’s not right. Anyone who wants a change for the better should consider voting for Ortino.

Straw Poll: All of Vinnie's votes added to all of Vic's votes is still less than half of Rambosk's votes.
This thing is OVER.

Truth1, if you really think Ortino can prevent people from making mistakes, you'd be wrong. And why does he hire all those fired and disgraced deputies you despise so much? Besides, two of the topics you mention were by the City of Naples Police not the CCSO.

Toesmom...if what you are saying is true than Mr. Ramsbok is committing a major campaign violation that could result in possible criminal charges. It is a violation to use county employees on county time to campaign. Are you sure this employee is on the clock?

#53 Posted by SandnSurf on July 31, 2008 at 6:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I may have a problem with Curatolo accepting contributions from Baker's attorney. This is a major violation of ethics. It may not cross the line of elections law but certainly is not ethical. I guess it would depend upon one's ethical beliefs. I wonder how other board members feel about it. Another school of thought is that if let's say Ms Curatolo says, it isn't against the law and perhaps she has been friends with Mr Fridkin, then she should have recused herself from voting on Mr Baker's termination. Either way she looks bad to have accepted this money.

It was a shame that the Public Defender position was not on the ballot. I am sure that Kathy Smith would have won by a landslide. Darrow came late and left early and Boyle was a no show. That proves to me that they don't much interest is what the voters of Collier County have to say. Keep Kathy for Public Defender!

#55 Posted by thump3371 on July 31, 2008 at 6:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No I'm not sure but I've been to at least 3 events that were in the middle of a work day & they were present. Also I attended the debate at the Hilton this past Tuesday. I did not get there till after 5 but someone called & told me they were there very early cause they were seen there. How can they do this when it's their normal work day? Maybe someone from the press should look into it further & look at their time cards. They should not be at campaign events during normal business hours & their normal hours are M-F I believe the hours are 8-5.

#56 Posted by Toesmom on July 31, 2008 at 6:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Toesmom, why don't you look into it yourself? You make many accusations but that's it, accusations. Many civilian employees may take PDO time whenever they want - if approved by their supervisors. So maybe their workday was 8 to 12 with the rest PDO. Do you think they would falsify their timecards like Victor Ortino did? They are not that dumb. So please, look into it.

#57 Posted by DeDeDee on July 31, 2008 at 7:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Thump, did it ever occur to you that Darrow has an actual case load, where as your Kathy Smith does not. Further, lets also let everyone know that Kathy Smith has NEVER tried a felony case solo. HELLO, how can you be expected to run a 5 county office when you have never done that. Secondly, he left at 6:30, he also has a wife and child at home. If anyone is interested why Rex Darrow is the best candidate for the job, go to www.rexdarrow.com for more information.

ToeJamMom maybe you should have asked your boss for earned time off to get there earlier the other night. Boss wont let you? Maybe you should go work at the sheriff's office. I heard its a GREAT place to work. Morale is TERRIFIC there and best of all Kevin Rambosk will be our new Sheriff on August 26!

#60 Posted by plextone on July 31, 2008 at 8:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

As a newcomer to politics with no ties to either candidate I am thinking that this thing is wayyyy over.

In the next few weeks Ortino's camp will likely do nothing but sling mud as he has lost on the issues. He has no vision, no plans for the future, no education and very limited experience. It seems that Mr. Ortino's grand plan ends with him getting a paycheck and benifits like back in the good ol' days prior to be drumed out of the FHP. $$$ is what motivates Mr. Ortino. How many hours a day do you think he would work? You can bet he would be a "Part Time Sheriff" at best.

No one will work harder than Kevin Rambosk as he is driven to serve the public as he has done his whole life.

Mr. Ortino...hasn't seen the football since the kickoff.

It's called vacation time.

Too bad you don't work for an agency that allows you time off for personal reasons!!!!

Here are some great qualifications for Sheriff.

1. Longtime Volunteer for several Crisis Hotlines.
2. Attended and achieved Honors level at University of Pudget Sound, extensive studies in Asian studies, Psychology and Law.
3. Transferred to University of Washington state at Seattle, obtained a Bachelors degree in Psychology.
4. Was groomed in two cities by the Republican Party for political office.
5. Holder of a measured and documented IQ of 124.
6. Great looker and holds several commendations for being a great public speaker.

Sound like a great Sheriff candidate doesnt it.
Its Ted Bundy, confessed and executed serial killer who admitted to killing over one hundred women. All the education, IQ, ability to speak and swindle people doesnt mean anything. At least he was honest enough to confess. Unlike one of our Sheriff's candidates.

#63 Posted by ccso_id on August 1, 2008 at 12:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Oldpig,
Here's the law. It doesn't state anything about taking time off. It's clear.

And, by the way, the sheriff's office has decided to not honor a 119 request for the time cards, even though it's law they must allow a person to see the records.

1. 106.15 f.s.

Abstract: (2) No candidate, in the furtherance of his or her candidacy for nomination or election to public office in any election, shall use any state-owned aircraft or motor vehicle, as provided in chapter 287, solely for the purpose of furthering his or her candidacy. (3) A candidate may not, in the furtherance of his or her candidacy for nomination or election to public office in any election, use the services of any state, county, municipal, or district officer or employee during working hours.

I don't see anywhere in state election law where it says an employee can take time off work, leave or otherwise. The law to me is clear. It's not gray.."during normal working hours."

#63 It's not a great place to work. Morale is at an all time low. The upper crust there like to lie about morale. I get plenty of paid time off I choose to use it how I want not how I'm made to.

CCSO doesn't want to give up the time cards then something sounds fishy. I know someone who will put in a request I'll also do a request see if they give them up to that person.

#66 Posted by Toesmom on August 1, 2008 at 8:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

#62 everyone knows that was bogus that one deputy was a target. Do you truly believe he could of gotten away with doing NOTHING for 6 months? Where was his Lt.? The Lt. currently has 2 or 3 open investigations that will never be closed till after the election. Actually there are dozens of open files that will never be closed before the election. Jim Williams can't do anything to hurt his candidate. Has to protect his at all costs.

#67 Posted by Toesmom on August 1, 2008 at 9:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ccso_id, and there are many more serial killers that have the exact same resume as Ortinio – so your point is?

Mothernature, these girls you are talking about are not running for office. If they are on vacation time they can do what they want – even though you don’t like it. Yes, it is clear, you don’t know what you are talking about. Oh, I almost forgot, how can you request to see time cards that have not been turned in/completed yet? I think the pay period ends next Tuesday – ask after that.

Toesmom, more rhetoric from you I see. If morale was so low, why aren’t these unhappy deputies giving money to Otino’s campaign? Why don’t they show up at his events? The opposite is true for Rambosk though, they give money and show up in support. Some actual facts from you would be nice for once.

#68 Posted by Ry42 on August 1, 2008 at 10:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ry42. I requested time cards for previous debates. Sorry Charlie. They can't go back now and change them very well, can they? The law is clear. It doesn't say If you take time off it's OK. It says during NORMAL working hours.
As for donations, have you never heard of intimidation and threats to be fired if you give to Ortino?
Also, I think all citizens should read this blog. It tells exactly why a leadership change is needed in the heirarchy of CCSO.

#69 Posted by mothernature on August 1, 2008 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mothernature, so now you interpret the law as saying when on vacation time, you may not participate in a campaign? You are a few fries short of a Happy Meal. Get a clue, you need one. Prove they changed the time sheets. Do you think they are as dumb as Victor Ortino and would falsify timecards like he did? And no, I have never heard of anyone being threatened with their job if they gave to Vic. Hell, if that were true I know several deputies that would donate so they could win a multi-million dollar lawsuit. It’s not happening – besides Vic has all the support remember? That’s what you and your friends say. If so, why be afraid? Yes, people should read that blog – lots of Ortino supporters posting lies and accusations about deputies and the agency there. Matter of fact I do believe you are AngelAngel on that blog.

----Why would anyone want to vote for Kevin Rambosk?

truthie thanks for the link to Kevin's bio...wow, he sure is qualified- just look at all of those academic accomplishments, real law enforcement experience and all that community service. Kevin is obviously the best qualified candidate and is our next Sheriff.

Vote Rambosk on August 26!

plainlogic -- I admit Mr. Rambosk does have an impressive background. Therefore, one would think that he would have known about the election laws.
