Three volunteers bring drowned girl back to life

Kathlene Durocher is searching for her heroes.

They’re not exactly her heroes but she’ll be forever in debt to them just the same.

The three people, all strangers at the time, brought her daughter back from the dead.

And though she’s personally thanked one person responsible for saving her daughter’s life, she still wants to thank, and meet, the other two who worked to bring her daughter back from death.

“They were complete strangers to me,” she said Monday. “I don’t know who it was. (But) I want to meet them because they saved the life of my beautiful, almost two-year-old baby.”

Meagan Durocher, 1, fell into a pool at Bristol Pines on Saturday evening. The family was attending a birthday party for Durocher’s brother, Naples Police Officer Steve Walden, when Meagan fell in. One witness thought Meagan was under water for at least a minute.

Durocher’s sister pulled Meagan out of the pool and brought her to a table, where party-goers began doing CPR, said Mark Walden, Meagan’s grandfather.

“I saw it within a foot of me, that child was dead,” Walden said. “The child was purple (with) swelled eyes and swelled black lips.”

Meagan wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, according to Naples Police Officer Benjamin Vasquez.

Vasquez was attending the birthday party, and was off duty when the accident occurred.

He rushed to the family’s aid, even though he had never performed CPR on a child before.

“She was purple as a grape,” he said. “It was amazing.”

Once Meagan’s family laid her on a table, Vasquez began chest compressions. But there were so many people surrounding the table, he couldn’t get close enough to breathe for her. So he yelled for help, and that’s when Durocher’s angels stepped in.

She doesn’t know their names, or even where they live.

All Durocher knows is that a man and a woman who were by the pool that day, and not part of the party, ran over to help. The man breathed for Meagan while the woman, whom Walden thought was a nurse, took her pulse.

The threesome worked on Meagan while Walden went to flag down emergency workers. It took three minutes — maybe more, maybe less, no one seems to know exactly how long they performed CPR — before they felt a pulse.

Soon she was breathing on her own, spitting up water and screaming for her parents.

“I was hysterical, and someone came up to me and said ‘Look at her, she’s up,’” Durocher said.

Meagan was transported to NCH North Naples Hospital on Saturday night and was released Sunday. Vasquez said he met with the family on Sunday, and was surprised how well Meagan was doing.

Durocher said Monday that everything is back to normal with Meagan.

“She’s perfect,” Durocher said. “I couldn’t believe it ... Most of the time this kind of stuff doesn’t happen. It’s a miracle.”

Now Durocher is hoping for another miracle of sorts. Before she could thank the two strangers for saving her daughter’s life, they were gone. Durocher is now hoping the couple will reappear in time to celebrate Meagan’s second birthday later this month.

“I want to meet these people for her birthday,” she said. “I want these people to be there. I want to meet them and (thank them).”

Awesome! Wonderful job!

It's great to finally hear a good news story with all these negative ones lately.

Lesson for all .... learn CPR and don't be affraid to get involved. This child is alive today thanks to good samaratins and quick acting off duty deputies. Great job.

Another lesson for all ... keep an eye on your kids.

CPR saves lives! Contact your local fire department or the American Heart Assoc. Lee-Collier Chapter in Bonita Springs to find out where you can get a course. A few hours of your time and you're trained for life to save a life.
These people took the time to learn and it paid off in the joyous cries of a living, breathing child.

Great job to all involved! Thanks for being there in this child's time of need.

"Kathlene Durocher is searching for her heroes.

What a lede. Self-contradictory, nonsensical and seemingly designed to make the reader scratch his head and go "Huh?"

I wonder what it was like before her editors had her write something they could print.

God Bless them, Nice to know there are still great people out there.

Great job officer Vazquez!!!! Officer Benjamin Vazquez. I just want to point that out. Since some people only like to see the bad things some hispanics do.

Based on this story, I smell neglect on a 1 year old. How can anyone not be watching a 1 year old, especially next to a pool? We can praise the three volunteers but this story should have never made it this far. Where are the questions from Law Enforcement to find the real truth to this story? I see more to this once DCF hears about it.

Lay off USD...Children can be gone in a second and some drownings occur with adults in the water and nearby. This story is great because everyone around rushed to the aid of those in need.

Quite a breathtaking story.

I agree with USDefender. No responsible parent allows a toddler to wander around unsupervised near deep water. Obviously, I'm delighted that the story has a happy ending, and have nothing but priase for those involved in saving this child's life, but the lesson for other parents is clear - the safety of your children is YOUR responsibility, take that responsibilty seriously.

elnuestros,

I felt the same way when I read this article. Apart from the subject matter, which is very emotional, the piece was badly written - this reporter must be very junior.

"praise God, miracle"..no, praise the humans who were heroic!...

God as usual was asleep while the little girl was drowning just as the myth God sleeps everyday little girls are molested, raped and murdered...get real humans..your coping fantasies only make your life worse...mothers who believe "someone up there" is looking after their children only delude themselves and fail to properly care for their children..the only one looking after us, is us. Myths are dangerous opiates for those too lazy to be responsible and really think/act/study/work..if prayer actually worked, medical science and CPR would have never evolved and hero Vazquez could have just said a prayer instead of thinking, reacting and doing...

Well said prometheus.....

#19 Posted by theabyss on August 5, 2008 at noon (Suggest removal)

I couldn't agree more, prometheus.

If prayer actually worked, the world would not be in the sad, sick state it is in. Little children would not die from horrible diseases, there would be enough food and clean water for everyone. The innocent would be healthy and the cruel would die.

So no, this was no miracle. Those people happened to be in the right place and the right time and were brave enough to do what needed to be done. God, as usual, was conspicuous by his absence.

If one believes God is in control and placed those people there to save this child, then why allow her to fall in the pool in the first place? For amusement? And what about all the other children who are not so fortunate?

Get real. These people are heroes. Plain and simple.

There's nothing more upsetting then someone always trying to point a finger. Things happen! They happen so quickly. Everything happens for a reason, but accidents happen and we have to look at the bright side that she is still here and I'm sure everyone involved learned a great lesson. It was a miracle!

#21 Posted by Rampid on August 5, 2008 at 1:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

prometheus... God never sleeps. He has reasons for everything he does. This was as plain as day, one of gods miracles. A work of his grace and mercy. The people who brought her back were his tools and they should have the spotlight, but it all goes back to GOD.

I am glad a mother will be celebrating the life of her baby rather than mourning a death. It is wonderful to know that there are uninvolved people who are willing to step up to help.
I personally do not let my baby out of arms reach while near any type of water. Call me paranoid. I have 5 kids and none have come close to drowning.
God wasn't there to protect them. I was.

volochine:

In the vernacular of the trade, the opening of a story is a lede. The caption on a picture is a cutline. The title of a story is a hed.

Using the vernacular seems presumptuous. Not using them seems uninformed. What's a mutha to do?

#24 Posted by elnuestros on August 5, 2008 at 3:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Children are quick and can get in trouble easily around pools, despite vigilance of adults. Obviously, it is important for someone to be assigned to watch any children in any pool 100% of the time (you can trade off).

What a great outcome this time.

#25 Posted by DawnPharmer on August 5, 2008 at 4:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I ,for one, have been quite impressed by all the seemingly perfect parents responding to this article. Yet, I cant help but to find it very hard to believe that any one of them have never had something happen to one of their children because their attention was pulled away for a minute. No trips to an emergency room, no bumps or band-aids. Iknow, I know, your children didn't die, but they could have and your quilt would follow you the rest of your life the same as this womans' will follow her. Your not the better parent, we have all just been lucky. As for Officer Vasquez and the others that helped give this baby back her life..... You did good son and I'm very proud of you for your inner strength and courage. We are all proud of you!

#26 Posted by Indianflower9 on August 5, 2008 at 9:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Awesome!

elnuestros, when are you going to apply for editor instead of just writing novels?

#27 Posted by youwilltapout on August 7, 2008 at 10:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)

My daughter is friends with this little girls sister, and all I can say is that they are a good family, and noone should point there finger at them. Most of these comments are good, but for the negative ones wondering if they are responsible parents, they are. And it was a accident, so maybe you people pointing your finger at them should think about their own lives, and Im sure they could name at least one thing that they could say, If I only,
Things would be different....Thanks
