Forecasters warned that Tropical Storm Fay could bring hurricane-force winds to the Florida Keys as soon as Monday. As of the 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, the storm could be west of Naples on Tuesday morning, packing winds up to 84 mph or stronger.

Fay could hit as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane, with winds perhaps reaching more than 100 mph, forecasters said Saturday, stressing that it was too early to tell how intense the storm would become. In anticipation, Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency for the state.

Hurricane forecasters put the storm 73 miles northwest of Naples at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, placing the storm off the Naples coast just before 10 a.m.

Flooding from Fay killed two people and left two children missing in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, authorities said Saturday. Forecasters said Fay could reach hurricane strength when it approaches central Cuba on Sunday, and the government there issued a hurricane watch for several provinces.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported that as of 2 p.m. EDT, the storm's center was about 50 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba. It had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. To become a hurricane, sustained winds must be at least 74 mph.

Florida's emergency management and county officials were monitoring the storm, and the city of Key West planned to open its emergency operation center Saturday.

Meteorologist Christopher Juckins said residents should be prepared for a hurricane. A Category 1 has winds from 74-95 mph and a Category 2 has winds from 96-110 mph.

"The official track brings it off the west coast of Florida Tuesday and Wednesday, however, the track is always uncertain and the entire peninsula of Florida needs to pay attention to the storm," said Juckins of the Hurricane Center.

Juckins said if the storm veers to the east, it could pass over the Miami area early Tuesday.

However, if it tracks farther west and remains over the Gulf of Mexico, it would hit landfall farther north and later in the week.

State officials in Tallahassee plan to activate the emergency operations center Monday, said Blair Heusdens, a spokeswoman for the state's Division of Emergency Management.

Fay is the sixth storm to form in the Atlantic this season.

POSTED AT 3 p.m

Tropical Storm Fay crossed over Haiti on Saturday morning and continues toward Cuba. The 11 a.m. forecast by the National Hurricane Center puts Fay at hurricane strength of 80 mph only 16 miles from Naples on Tuesday morning. The forecast track has shifted eastward since earlier forecasts.

At 11 a.m., The center of Tropical Storm Fay was located near latitude 19.0 north, longitude 73.7 west.

The latest forecast track brings the storm 16 miles southwest of Naples, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Hurricane Charley was on a similar track in 2004 when it veered ashore in Southwest Florida and caused extensive damage.

While experts say it is too early to accurately predict the storm's path, current computer models shifted somewhat to the west of South Florida earlier today. As of 11 a.m., they've come back to put Naples in the spotlight. Four now aim at Southwest Florida, while one remains into the Atlantic off the east coast and two remain west of Florida.

The National Hurricane Center's "discussion" report notes that conditions are favorable for Fay to strengthen as it approached Florida after hitting Cuba.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Fay could weaken slightly Saturday morning. But the storm could regain strength, especially as it travels over warm water. One comment from NHC forecasters is the amount of time Fay is overland. A longer time frame will mean a weaker storm, while an earlier exit will bring a stronger storm off Florida.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Fay is heading toward the west at about 14 mph. As of 5 a.m. EDT, maximum sustained winds were 45 mph with some higher gusting.

It is the sixth storm to form in the Atlantic this season. Forecasters say the storm could make its way toward southern Florida and the Florida Keys.

Earlier:

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports the interaction of the tropical low with the islands of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola is slowing its development. However, the system could intensify this weekend before closing in on Florida by early next week.

The low today remains a disorganized rainmaker as it moves across Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola. Over the next 12 to 24 hours, the low will pummel the islands with heavy rain and strong winds that could spark life-threatening flooding and landslides.

The poorly defined center of the storm will be over the Bahamas island chain on Saturday, with the rain and wind spreading across the Bahamas and Cuba on Sunday.

According to Expert Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno, the low could "quickly spin up as it moves away from the mountainous islands and over an area of warm water and reduced wind shear." The lower terrain in the Bahamas will increase the potential for development.

The question remains, where will this developing system go? Expert Senior Meteorologist Dan Kottlowski says, "The options are wide open as long as the system remains unorganized."

Kottlowski says there are two factors that will influence where the system goes - the forward speed of the system and a building area of high pressure over the southeastern U.S. "The storm is moving slowly because of the interaction with the mountains of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. A slow-moving system will track toward Florida or the eastern Gulf of Mexico. If the system picks up speed it could turn east of Florida and head toward the Carolinas."

All interests in the Caribbean, Bahamas and the southeastern United States should monitor the low through early next week for increased development and changes in its track.

Oil and energy traders are keeping a close eye on the system. If the system moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico it could have a minor impact on oil and gas production in the Gulf. The majority of oil and gas operations are in the western Gulf.

Commodities traders will monitor the potential impact on agriculture in Florida. Expert Senior Meteorologist and AccuWeather.com agriculture expert Dale Mohler says the impact will depend on the track of the storm.

"I am fairly confident that the system will not have an adverse effect on the primary citrus growing area in the middle of the state. In fact, the storm is much more likely to bring beneficial rain rather than damaging wind."

Mohler adds that if the storm stays along the east coast of Florida, tropical storm force winds could impact the Indian River citrus areas.

Federal forecasters last Thursday upgraded their outlook for this Atlantic hurricane season to include two more named storms than previously predicted.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projects an 85 percent probability of an above-normal season — up from 65 percent in May.

In its August update, NOAA said there was a better than average chance of 14 to 18 named storms, seven to 10 hurricanes and three to six hurricanes of at least Category 3 strength, which would be top sustained winds of at least 111 mph.

So far this year, five named storms, including two hurricanes, have formed. The hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

In May, the federal outlook called for 12 to 16 named storms, six to nine hurricanes and two to five major ones. An average season has 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

Atmospheric and ocean conditions are ripe for an above-normal season, said Gerry Bell, the lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md.

"Some of these conditions include reduced wind shear, weaker trade winds, an active West African monsoon system, the winds coming off of Africa and warmer-than-average water in the Atlantic Ocean," Bell said.

Tropical Storm Arthur formed near the coast of Belize the day before the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1. It quickly made landfall at the Belize-Mexico border, and five people died in Belize amid the flooding caused by the storm.

The season's first hurricane, Bertha, reached Category 3 strength before slowly blustering past Bermuda last month as a weaker storm. Tropical Storm Cristobal dumped rain along the Carolinas' coastline late last month but did not make landfall.

Texas has been struck twice this season. Hurricane Dolly on July 23 slammed into the South Texas coast as a Category 2 storm with top sustained winds of at least 96 mph. The storm dumped more than a foot of rain in places. Tropical Storm Edouard came ashore Tuesday east of Galveston.

"Typically when you have strong activity during July, that's also a very strong indicator the remainder of the season will be above-normal," Bell said.

The peak months of hurricane season are August through October.

Noted hurricane researcher William Gray revised his Atlantic forecast on Tuesday, calling for 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, this season. The former Colorado State University climatologist said five of the hurricanes will be major.

Gray's revised forecast includes hurricanes Bertha and Dolly. He had previously called for 15 named storms and eight hurricanes.

here you go rockford
Once the storm finally emerges and stays over the warm waters of the Bahamas or Florida Straits, the models expect it to intensify quickly into a hurricane, possibly a major hurricane.

Kira,

A hurricane might be on its way to SWFLA and you are worried about a late start at school? Give me a break.

#8 Posted by Sanity on August 15, 2008 at 10:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Normally, I would be joking with all of U.

I would say something sarcastic:

Would U like some ice cream, with that cone of doom? Chocolate? Vanilla? Mint Chocolate Chip?
No, make that a DOUBLE SCOOP of mint chocolate chip for my comfort food, too.

Instead, I'll be trekking out to the store to stock up for another storm here, no matter what it turns out 2 B.

So let's see:

Ice cream ~ check mint choc. 2 be exact
Lots of WATER ~ check
Ice for my beer cooler and food ~ check
EZ dry foods to munch as I'm waiting for my electricity to return ~ check
batteries for my flashlight because I'm scared of the dark ~check
weather radio ~check
noisy generator and gas, if I can find my generator in my unorganized garage~check
full tank in my car ~ check
storm shutters ~check
dog safe and sound ~check
more comfort food ~check
propane for my barbie ~check

sixwhitehorses, the weatherman will hopefully tell us this storm will GO AWAY!

For now...i'll go get some supplies for the storm, thank U.

More than likely if we have torrential rain and wind there will be no school. Would you want your kid standing at a bus stop getting soaked. Thats what Hurricane make up days are for.

If it stays on the current track, my bet is that school is postponed until Wed. Of course, many parents think school starts Monday - Thank you Wink news!

I have a friend of a friend’s cousin's uncle's wife that belongs. I got emailed some newsletters and testimonials.

Cracker, I'm saving that $7 for my initial fee. I'm not going to spend it on frivolous things like beer. I have plenty in my fridge ready for Fay already.

Did any of you inquire about the blogger project the NDN is doing?

Tequila? I don't know about that. That’s dangerous territory there.

TO: NDN staff: you need to intervene

This is YOUR lead article, and you are allowing the "comments" (over 100 already) to become a "chat" room for the usual babble people

This happens not infrequently

enufenuf is a traditional party pooper.

Every hurricane party has a pooper, that's why we invited U.

Party pooper!

Party pooper!

LOL ice cream lovers, singers, beer drinkers, perfect softened ice cream nukers, redrovers, and funny rangers who lived on the Gulf too long.

OOooh this gives me a taste for a root beer float.

I better put some root beers in my hurricans supplies kit.

Oh yes, and the darned candles.

WHERE THE HECK ARE THOSE nasty half-melted CANDLES?

#92 Posted by beetlejuice on August 16, 2008 at 7:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I used to hang out around Indian Hill on Marco, many years ago, lots of indian graves there. Never could figure out how them people could build and buy homes on top of an entire Indian burial ground. I can imagine some things that might be happening in some of those houses, eeeh gads!

Why do people use candles when the electric goes off?? With all the modern gadgets out there now wouldn't tap lights be safer & more useful then a tiny flame.

Ya'll are 2 funny!

I'm laughing so hard I've wet my pants...again.

I drank too many root beer floats.

Speaking of wet, the weather prediction is changing a bit, so is Naples going to get a lot of rain or not?

Saw they reccomend bleach in your little kit. I spill bleach on EVERYTHING...ruins my clothes.

Did anyone bring chips and salsa to this hurricane party, I have a hankering.

Speaking of chips...AVOID MSG..there is a seventeen year old in Canada who determined that MSG is bad for your brain...she tested this theory on snails. I didn't know snails had brains, so this is news to me, too.

I really gotta stop hitting the root beer.

JYD R U gonna be on TV as U are at the Surf Club in a hurricane?

I'm picturing a nice drink flying out of bar in hurricane force winds...JYD chasing after it on the beach.

By: Jimmy Buffett
1974
Squalls out on the gulf stream
Big storm's comin' soon
I passed out in my hammock
And God I slept 'til way past noon
Stood up and tried to focus
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled next door to the bar

buffet sucks, sorry.

#121 Posted by mimibuck on August 16, 2008 at 10:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey the censorship is back, I tried to write bad@&& the real word and I went to preview and my word was change to bottomfeeder. Dude we just got busted. dang, try and write it again.

#122 Posted by allUpoliticalsockpuppets on August 16, 2008 at 10:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Could it be that not censored when used as a proper noun, Bad vs. bad ??? My earlier post wasn't deleted...

So what do you guys think? Will we get some serious weather? Not that I want anyones property damaged, but I am sure the hard working people in these counties could use the work from some damage....

#123 Posted by UnderscoreUnderscore on August 16, 2008 at 10:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I hope it's not to bad. I do not want properties damaged either, but your right it would create a little work. It's still bad thought I think of the people that do not have homeowners ins. or money in the bank to get them through a few day if they have loss of employment due to the storm.

Bad Ass coffee

Hey, it works if it's a proper noun. Cool. Just don't try the A with dollar sign, dollar sign or it comes out bottom. That thar's just too funny. (Thanks to larry the cable guy).

#131 Posted by mothernature on August 16, 2008 at 10:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey, do you know how to know when a hurricane really is going to hit?

#132 Posted by mothernature on August 16, 2008 at 10:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

When the beer trucks quit running in the Keys and the mayor orders the bars to close.

Do you know how to know when a hurricane is NOT going to hit you?

When Jim Cantore is in your city. He's never within two hours of a hurricane...

#133 Posted by mothernature on August 16, 2008 at 10:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No cant say that I have, I do love a good fresh cup of coffee, I just realized I wrote coffee wrong three time. I must be getting tired. Where can I get some of Baby coffee?

Wow..Redrover, Hi, Emmy, indi (et al)
Thanks for missing me.

I was out buying supplies for the 'cane party.
Funny I was on my way home but had to stop to buy 5 gallons of mint chocolate chip ice cream. I had a sudden craving which I could not explain.

The Jello shots sound a bit on the sweet side, I am sticking with near frozen beer for the first desert course. Well need hot fudge and whipping cream for the second course to go with the mint chocolate chip ice cream!

#136 Posted by BlueTonguedVole on August 16, 2008 at 11:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think you can order it online...

Looks like Marco and Fort Myers are pretty close to ground zero at the 11 p.m. advisory.
