Letter of the Day: Can we do it?
Editor, Daily News:
As we prepare to welcome kids back to school it is time to find a focus.
Our Collier County school district has many budget and political issues to deal with. Those issues warrant and deserve attention — however, not the type of attention that could take away from our vital purpose. That would be “the education and advancement of our youth.”
Whatever “side” or “view” any of us have on the many pending issues, let us attempt to be solid role models of character traits and lead our youth in a way and direction that lets them know that whatever happens, they are and will remain our central focus!
May everyone — student, teacher, support staff, administration, parents and all who truly care — have a fantastic 2008-09 school year.
Richard Nichols, Naples
Letter: Feeling lucky?
Editor, Daily News:
Earl, leading character in our comic strip “Pickles,” read this to his wife Opal: “It says right here that it costs the government almost two cents to make a one-cent penny. ... I used to pick up pennies ... but not anymore.”
In the early 1930s my dad was transferred from Petersburg to Richmond, Va.
We moved across the street from Gov. Bill Tuck’s sister, Mrs. Buckley, whose son, Graham, was skillful at flipping cards.
The cards were enclosed with a 5-by-3½-inch hunk of chewing gum.
These penny cards preceded baseball cards. They featured cowboys (Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Smith Ballew, etc.), American Indian chiefs (Powhatan, Wahunsunacock, Massasoit, etc.) and fictitious outlaws.
I’ll never forget a card I won from Graham which was headlined “Wanted! Counterfeiter! Gaston the Gorilla! Gaston counterfeited nickels by the thousands at the cost of a dime each.”
Gaston’s card 77 years later would be worth many good nickels today.
Earl, I still pick up pennies. It’s for good luck — and luck is a terrific word if you put a “p’’ before it.

Letter: Sickening
Editor, Daily News:
I was very upset when I read Thursday’s article about a Florida inmate’s staph-infection death at the women’s prison in Gretna.
They turn off the water in restrooms and bathing facilities for days and possibly up to a week at a time?!
How can the state allow this?
Are we still living in the Dark Ages?

Letter: She serves with honor
Editor, Daily News:
Linda Abbott, Collier County School Board member, has been vilified in the press ever since former Superintendent Ray Baker was fired.
View the video of that infamous board meeting and you will hear a closing, spontaneous speech by Richard Calabrese in which he mentions all the reasons he, Abbott and Steve Donovan felt Baker should be fired.
Linda wanted to wait until Baker’s contract would come up for review shortly and that is why she was so undecided when asked to vote for his immediate dismissal. Donovan and Calabrese wanted the superintendent change in place before the new school term.
Linda has performed the best she could under very difficult circumstances. If she loses this election, she won’t leave with “her tail between her legs” (quoting one letter writer). She will leave with her head held high, having given it her all! She has my vote.

Letter: How low can they go?
Editor, Daily News:
It’s about time someone with some clout complains about the talking heads and the unusually distasteful celebrations after an athlete achieves what he/she is paid to do — make the big plays or the long putts.
Paul Brown, the famous Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns coach, was known to say to his celebrating football players, “Act like you’ve been there before!”
That’s what they should do.
Columnist Thomas Sowell is right. The self-acclamation, pounding of chest, dancing a jig, etc., are not necessary nor appreciated by many of us.
And the people who talk too much are legend. I simply turn off the sound when they cannot seem to shut up for the benefit of all.
You tell it like it is, Mr. Sowell.
I’ve played enough sports in my 84 years to know what is outstanding and what is just expected in the ordinary course of a game.
Seems the athletes should know this too.

Letter: It’s a secret
Editor, Daily News:
For a true appreciation of the autocratic style of governing that has befallen Florida, one needed only to attend the scam of a “public” meeting held by the Florida Department of Transportation on Thursday.
This was a sad example of the effrontery embraced by public officials during this governor’s tenure.
This was billed as a “public meeting where a select panel of technical and financial experts will brief the Scoring Committee.”
Two “experts” sat at one table. Facing them sat six FDOT employees with no identifying name tags or placards. One placard would have sufficed: “Shill.”
No agenda was provided to the public. There was no public comment portion for this so-called public meeting. The two alleged experts referenced assorted pages from a report — a report that one can only assume was in the hands of the nameless panelists at the two tables. The report was not available to the public.
When questioned why none of the meeting materials were provided to the public, FDOT’s Edward McKinney responded that the materials had not been produced until that morning.
Curiously, the nameless panel of six charged with scoring the technical and financial strengths of six foreign companies bidding to lease Alligator Alley had no questions. Not one.
Very odd, especially when one considers this is the very first time in Florida that an attempt has been made to lease public assets to the highest bidder.
So much for Gov. Charlie Crist’s Sunshine proclamation. There was no sunshine in Plantation on Thursday.

Letter: On the roads again
Editor, Daily News:
It’s our rainy season now. The sky grows dark and the rain comes down in torrents. The law states that headlights must be turned on when it’s raining.
Not the case in Naples.
The only way to get people to turn on their headlights is to hit them hard in their pocketbooks.
Have the police set up a checkpoint and have them pull over all the cars that drive through without their headlights on.
This must be too hard for the Naples police, as I’ve been living here 10 years and not once have I ever seen this law enforced.
That’s probably because the police would have to put on their rain gear and stand the chance of getting wet!
Meanwhile, as our economy grows sour, people with limited funds are letting their cars go without maintenance. There are unsafe cars with no mufflers, bald tires and bad emission systems on the road.
Funny, though, I still see these people at the 7-Eleven buying cases of beer every night.
Eric H. Gross, Naples
Letter: Sunscreen and a jetty
Editor, Daily News:
Clam Pass is in bad shape.
While fishing Monday at the pass, I noticed a large amount of eelgrass floating out.
It looks sick.
The pass is almost closed, which results in poor flushing in and out.
A lot of sunscreen from the north and south beaches might cause a lot of these problems on the eelgrass and mangroves.
I still think the best solution might be a stone jetty, 300 to 500 feet, with a deep channel. It might solve a lot of problems.
Maybe I’m not that smart, but I’m not that stupid.
Hans Meier, Naples
Letter: The next steps to take
Editor, Daily News:
It will take years for any actions undertaken now to produce more oil or electricity. We must reduce usage. We need a bridge to long-term solutions. Wouldn’t it be great to move toward less foreign oil dependency while recognizing drivers who drive efficiently? Here is an approach that would do just that. It imposes a fuel surtax but returns collected surtaxes to efficient drivers.
Let’s assume that if all cars averaged 30 miles per gallon we would have OPEC off our backs. Few cars on the road today will realize this mileage when exceeding posted speeds, waiting at stoplights and with the air-conditioning running.
Here’s my plan:
1. All drivers report annual mileage driven.
2. A temporary $3 gas and diesel surtax (high enough to get everyone’s attention!)
3. A 30-mpg national target.
4. Surtax rebated in proportion to average mileage experienced. Some get it all back by achieving the targeted mileage, those who don’t get back only a part of what they paid. Others receive more by exceeding the 30 mpg average.
5. Those who use alternate fuels receive a mileage-based surtax rebate assuming they had used gas or diesel. A nice financial inducement.
6. This is painful, but will awaken us to the problem of excessive oil dependency. It’s also self-financing, with the surtax collected certainly exceeding payouts in the early years. With reduced demand the price of fuel should fall.

Letter: Just not so
Editor, Daily News:
Victor Ortino is misleading the public in regard to his qualifications for the office of Collier County sheriff.
Claiming a “federal government background” of four years in Air Force security is ridiculous. Ortino touts his 24 years as a private investigator as equating to law-enforcement experience. Working as a PI does not qualify as law-enforcement experience. Ortino’s Florida Highway Patrol tenure really adds up to about 18 months since a portion was in fired or suspended status. Ortino’s lack of law-enforcement experience and basic business skills continually is demonstrated in his budget plan.
I can tell you as a current law-enforcement officer, Ortino’s ill-conceived and nonsensical plan to cut $37 million will result in the loss of 400 deputies. That’s not safe.
I am a retired Marine Corps colonel currently serving as the chief of investigations for the Sheriff’s Office.

Letter: Keep the good ones
Editor, Daily News:
We have great Lee County commissioners. Since 2001, a quiet struggle has been going on about the future of east Lee County called the density reduction/groundwater resource area. It is the last frontier for preserving the future quality of Lee’s clean drinking water. It also preserves the remaining endangered wildlife.
There has been a threat to this whole working system since 2001 when large mining companies “eyed” this land for their “heavy industrial” dreams.
My neighbors and I joined hands and gave our money (about $170,000 so far) in opposing these “giants” who out-gunned us like the biblical Goliath out-gunned David.
Our commissioners (Bob Janes, Ray Judah, Frank Mann, Brian Bigelow and Tammy Hall) unanimously voted to deny any more mines in the DR/GR twice in a row, and preserved Lee’s future.

Letter: They just don’t get it
Editor, Daily News:
OPEC, without firing a shot, is waging an economic war against Western civilization. Its impact is felt immediately at the gas pump for tourists, airlines, truckers and cargo ships, who are being impoverished by this cartel. Home heating oil will bankrupt thousands in the coming winter.
The only glitch to this scenario is a new, large source of untapped petroleum coming to the market.
Presently, the cartel has little to worry about. It has friends in high places. Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are against drilling almost everywhere in the United States, the largest known source of untapped petroleum in the world. Whose side are they on? Does anybody know?
Yes, we do need an all-out effort on alternate sources. Nuclear, solar, coal liquefaction, wind, bio-fuels and conservation. But it must start with drilling.

Editor, Daily News:
I was invited to dine at the new Chili’s in North Naples on Immokalee Road as part of a training period before opening. I was surprised to find out that there were many healthy choices on the menu. The food was great.
Also during this time, donations were accepted for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I was told that during September donations are accepted at all Chili’s for St. Jude’s.
I will definitely be back. Go in September and donate to a great cause.

Letter: From the dead
Editor, Daily News:
I say “amen’’ to William Conklin’s letter of the day explaining that there is only one Arlington National Cemetery.
Also, that John Riccio’s “Arlington South” is more than a political gimmick. It is a disgraceful, despicable display dishonoring our fallen troops who fought and died for his freedom to write trashy letters and organize a display to debase Arlington National.
Hopefully, John will hear the dead from their graves express their resentments.

Letter: Not spotless
Editor, Daily News:
Kevin Rambosk knew, or should have known, smoking marijuana in 1976 was illegal. He did it anyway.
Rambosk said it was wrong and stupid to use drugs. But he did it.
Rambosk was Naples city manger, Naples chief of police, Collier County Sheriff’s Office undersheriff and executive officer. Rambosk violated the Hatch Act. Given all his law-enforcement experience, how could he not know he was in violation of the law?
Bill Clinton said he smoked marijuana, but never inhaled. He also said, “I never had sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky.” He lied!
John Edwards denied he ever had an affair. He lied!
Rambosk should have a spotless record. He does not!
He should not be elected to the office of sheriff.

Editor, Daily News:
Attention, doctors!
I understand that there are hundreds of people all over the world who have this awful illness known as Hashimoto’s encephalopathy and are in sanitariums and nursing homes.
Perhaps they either did not have the means for the required tests (terribly expensive) or did not have a doctor who cared enough to find the right diagnosis.
My husband, Augie, was gravely ill for two months and almost died. Now he is now about 100 percent recovered.
My gratitude and thanksgiving first to God, then to all medical professionals at NCH Healthcare System Downtown Naples Hospital for their knowledge and care, the Briggs Rehabilitation Center and to our friends and family for their loving support and prayers.
His illness mimicked a stroke, malaria, dementia and worse. After weeks and weeks of negative test results, his condition worsened. It was the dedication of his neurologist, who after many hours of work and research was finally able to diagnose a very rare auto-immune disease. Since 1995, there are less than 20 cases recorded in the U.S. and 34 in the world. Fortunately, it can be treated with steroids.
Within four hours of his first dose he showed signs of improvement and rapidly returned to health. To us it felt like a miracle!
We pray that others who may have HE will be as fortunate to receive the correct diagnosis.
To all who helped, thank you and may God be with you.
Mercedes Russo, Naples
Letter: A big vote for them
Editor, Daily News:
Kudos to Collier County Supervisor of Elections Jennifer Edwards and her staff and volunteers for making early voting such a joy.
My family and I participated in early voting at the Headquarters Library located on Orange Blossom Road in North Naples. The polling place was well-organized, the poll workers were efficient and well-spoken, and the entire process took just minutes.
I was concerned that the process would be more time-consuming than in the past, particularly in light of the changes to our voting system mandated by the Florida Legislature in the past year.
I should have known better. Once again Jennifer, her staff and team of volunteers have risen to the challenge and hit a home run for the voters.
Thanks to everyone who works so hard to make voting so easy for all of us.
Joe Foster, North Naples
Letter: ’Midnight sunshine’
Editor, Daily News:
Re: The ongoing push to lease Alligator Alley.
From what I read in the Daily News, the purpose of the Florida Department of Transportation’s Aug. 25 Collier County meeting is to unveil the short list of teams for the contract to lease the alley — after the FDOT will have had a briefing of the six teams in Broward and after the FDOT will have scored the statements of each team, and after having forwarded the scoring to a procurement panel. It is said that this is not a done deal?
The time and place for the Collier meeting have yet to be announced.
Why is this program so hell-bent to close so fast?
What was the minimum value that FDOT expected in advance of the bids being received?
Where is the math on this whole, shortsighted scheme for the public to review?
Again, the questions have been asked, but the information is being withheld under what appears to be FDOT’s “midnight sunshine.”
The truth needs to be told.
If you can help me to have Gov. Charlie Crist answer these questions for the citizens of Collier, Broward and the state, I would appreciate it. We all want to know.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting that vote.
The greatest argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.
(That's be boss, dilly, etc.)
A democracy is nothing more than an angry mob, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Mr. Williams is carrying the Rambosk banner. The only person who every suggested a large budget cut or a loss of deputy jobs is Rambosk, not Ortino. This is the latest smear campaign by the Rambosk campaign. It's simply another lie by the former under sheriff and now it's passed on by the only individual who will probably lose his position when Ortino cleans house. They cannot produce one iota of fact that Ortino uttered these words and they know it. Just like their other coverups, they are now fabricating statments in an effort to destroy Ortino.

I think that old lawyer joke works well for Williams.....how do you know when Williams is lying...his lips are moving.
He knows very well he is telling a boldface lie about the 400 deputy's and says it anyway.
This is the same guy who sent out a memo ordering his subordinates not to cooperate with neighboring law enforcement agencies, and participated in the coverup of Freeman's retirement and numerous other coverups.
Come on Officer Williams, try being a real Marine and tell the truth.
#9 Posted by straighttalker on August 17, 2008 at 8:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Seems the supporters of the former deputy who was forced to resign to avoid prosecution and who now wants to be sheriff are definately in panic mode. There is only ONE current member of the sheriffs department that Ortino does not want to retain. 400? Talk about pulling numbers out of a magic hat! Talk about a transparent attemtp to panic the voters! Wow.
Ortino has more investigative experience and law enforcement experience that Mr. Williams. Williams is not nor has he ever been a cop. To have attained the rank of Colonel in the Marine Corps is a laudible accomplishment, and I will be first in line to thank Mr. Williams for his service and dedication to the USA. But being a Marine is not the same as being a cop. For Williams, who was hired in as an administrator and has not worked on the street as a cop to talk about police work is like McDonalds talking about gourmet cooking.
I wonder if Williams letter condeming Ortino has anything to do with the fact that the one deputy Ortino will not keep is Mr. Williams?

concerned, where else could Vic cut the money? The CCSD is people and equipment, probably around 87 percent people/salary. It is refreshing to see Vic has run a very positive campaign , no smear tactics. Where's the proof of corruption Vic whines about? If he had proof he would report it as he has reported every little thing he does not agree with. Where are my signs Ginny, someone took em. Did you pay the fee for a permit Vic? What permit Ginny? If Rambosk reported all the missing signs, reports would be taken all day. They always go missing at night, the same time Vic's go up. Hmmm, I ain't no P.I. but something, Hmmm....

Vetres73 speaking of signs why is there a commercial rambosk sign at the East Naples substation? I saw it have the photos to prove it. That is not allowed. Wonder what other campaign material is on CCSO property that does not belong?

I heard they fixed all of the voting machines so that Rambosk starts with 10K more votes than everyone else on the entire ballot.
And I heard that there is a $100 bill hidden in every Rambosk brochure.
And then I heard that every Rambosk sign has a secret message sent out to all voters as they drive by.
And then I heard that Ortino actually told the truth ONCE.
And then I woke up!

Mr. Williams, I am deeply concerned with you bashing the Air Force. Having honorably served in the Air Force, I truly believe you have a holier than thou attitude. You, sir, should check your facts before you write a letter of the type you did. Remember the Air Force has the most intelligence of any service. You did know that right? It's a proven fact, something you don't know how to write...FACTS. I have family members who did serve and are now serving in the Marines. They are horrified by what you wrote about the Air Force. They can't believe a "once a Marine always a Marine" could denigrate a fellow service member who was honorably discharged. AS for FACTS, sir, you need to check on WHO said 400 deputies would be cut. That's a laughable statement as anyone in their right minds know that martial law would have to be declared if 400 deputies were not allowed to keep on working. I know that the debate film shows that it was the forced to resign ex undersheriff who said that. What about the rumor that you, sir, are the one who is really going to run the CCSO if that other candidate is elected? I am very upset that the NDN would allow a letter to be printed when they knew or should have known that the information contained therein is a falsehood and portrays someone in a false light. Last time I heard, the NDN could be held responsible for libel on that. I suggest to you Mr. Williams, that you get your FACTS straight. You are just upset because you know you never truly worked as a deputy, but was only sent through academy to get high risk pay to sit behind a desk ... at the taxpayers' expense.

Williams. What a joke, and EVERYONE here at the Sheriff's Office knows it, even the command staff. The only people that dont talk about it are the ones who are afraid of him, like Rambosk. Genghis (Williams) as he is known here at the SO is known for claiming tons of responsiblity and credit for things that he had nothing to do with. I dont know or care where you came from Genghis, but you schmoozed Hunter and Rambosk, you cant schmooze Ortino. He can see right through you. Funny how you had meetings with people and FDLE and tried to get rid of Hunter a little over a year ago, yet now you claim to back his hand picked successor. More of your "plan"? You bounce around talking about integrity all the time and truth is you wouldnt know integrity if it fell out of a second story window on your head. The other poster is right, you have never been a deputy or an investigator, so stop acting like you were, giving people advice on something you know nothing of. I'd venture to say that if Rambo does win this election, you'd be indicted for something in the next year or so. Hopefully for your sake Scooter, that wont happen. ORTINO FOR SHERIFF. YES WE NEED CHANGE.

Jim Williams claims to be a cop then I want to see his arrest record and tickets posted. I would also like to know how many bar brawls he's been dispatched to or domestics he's had to settle. I want to know how many times he's had to make a split second decision then get monday morning quarterbacked by the agency and told you have done things wrong.
Sitting behind a desk doesn't make you a cop just a pencil pusher with a gun. You sir are the reason Mr Rambosk is having a hard time and not winning by a landslide, People like you in the agency with your type of arrogance.

Fish, You ask others to answer Your questions, when do you answer questions put to You?
I will respond anyway. Energy from wind has a place in the U.S, the plan Pickens is pushing I'm on the fence about mostly because it's Pickens plan an he's not to be trusted.
Pickens is a Texas billionare oil man so he doesn't need the money, but is avaricious like some other's who hurt our country because of thier uncontrolled greed.
T.B.P was also the main supporter for the 'Swift Boat Lier's' in O4' against Kerry which he now regrets. He also offered a $1,000,000 prize to anyone who could show that the Swift Boat ad's contained any false info. A group of Real Nam Vets showed and proved at least six lie's were in the ad's, Picken's then reneged on his offer and would not pay. So he is a welcher, man of poor character, not to be trusted.
You throw the word Democracy around a lot! Yet you support a Dictator President who stripped Americans of it in the last eight years and you promote McCain who would strip even more.

It's myopic thinking like yours that results in the mediocre politicians we end up with. Just look at the choices we have running for President this year, bad and worse.
Not that I have an opinion on Rambosk or Ortino, but since you have provided this tidbit of "valuable" information, on the contrary, I guess I will vote for Rambosk, if only for the purpose of cancelling out your vote.

Rex Ruther Re: your "opinion" of Riccio and his efforts to bring attention to the "murders' committed by Bush/Cheney & the GOP, the only disgraceful display I would point to is the "flag wavers" who sport their flag lapel pins in the name of patriotism. Most of them have never served and are the real hypocrites that spew out their vindictive for selfish political goals. Your facade no longer provides immunity for criticism and exposure of your real agenda. Please refresh my memory and tell us what time period that book is about.
A fair estimate of age will suffice.
"Dreams from My Father" was first published in 1995 (13 years ago) and is an autobiographical account of the experiences that shaped his world views and his view of America. It covers his life up to Harvard Law School which was 20 years ago.
"The Audacity of Hope" was published in 2006 (2 years ago) and outlines his core values and policy positions.
Reading either book gives insight into what the man thinks and feels and therefore his character. They also cover who he chose to associate with and idolize which gives insight into his judgement.

Knital, I read both of Obama's books and gained a huge respect for him. I feel he is a courageous man who as a boy was bounced from one place to another, who was raised as a white but not accepted in society as white, so, as all blacks, be they 1/10th black, society calls them black. They are relegated to that. It's not something they even have a choice in.
But,in spite of all that, Obama not only succeeded but excelled. He used the strong principles his white Grand Parents gave him which was love your country, work hard and appreciate the opportunities America gives you.
So, he worked hard and applied for and got scholarships. He exceeded in college and graduated from his law class Magna c u m laude. He was, as you know, the first Black President of the Harvard Law Review.
When he graduated he tried to help others who were poor to rise up from their poor circumstances, get jobs and improve their circumstances. It was difficult, but he tried.
His successes were many, and he is an admirable person, that only a hateful person could find fault with.
He said in his book the "Audacity of Hope" that he believed in reaching across the aisle in Congress, because not all good ideas come only from one side or the other, and when the other side has a good idea, support it.
He had the wisdom and good judgment to foresee the the chaos, deaths and destruction that would come from our Iraq invasion and he, after looking at all the evidence, said it was not enough to support an invasion. And HE WAS RIGHT.
It is that kind of good judgment and strength of character with compassion that will make him a good leader, one who we can count on to make wise choices for this country and also bring, again, our good stature in the world.

Canuck, I think you are a compassionate person, so I don't understand your not allowing South Ossetia and Abkhazia who never wanted to break from Russia when Georgia did, to choose their own alliances.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia have declared their independence from Georgia going way back to the early 90's when Georgia declared her independence from Russia.
Now Georgia claims they belong to her, and she's invading them and forcing them into Georgia. Russia who is protecting them said no.
Look at the picture in the paper today of a man standing outside of his home in Ossetia. Does this look like something one should condone?
South Ossetia suffered many deaths and much destruction at the hands of Georgia before the Russians came in to stop it.
What I see here is that Georgia is wrong and started this military incursion by Russia.
I also see that Russia is using this to punish Georgia.
What I see is two wrongs. First Georgia and her invasion into S. Ossetia and then Russia, not for just protecting S. Ossetia but for going beyond what was necessary.
The way it appears is that S. Ossetia wants to be part of Russia as does Abkhazia, and I feel they deserve that right, just as we fought for the break up of Serbia and allowing Bosnia and Kosovo their freedoms. Just as we supported the freedom of the Kurds. Just as we supported the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Our problem is we are fickle, two faced and have double standards and no consistency in our foreign policy. It leaves other countries and peoples not knowing what we will do next.
We support Georgia, Right or Wrong, because we want Georgia in our sphere. We constantly push Russia out and make her feel threatened. Now tell me, all you who support Georgia, how does that improve our world relations and also the welfare of this world?

Umleed, I think some in the South probably still wish Lincoln hadn't succeeded. But that's not my point.
We are not consistent in whom we back breaking away from countries.
We say Georgia breaking from the Soviet Union was good, but South Ossetia and Abkhazia don't have that right to break away from Georgia.
You say Bosnia and Kosevo have the right to break from Yugoslavia, but Ossetia again doesn't have that right.
You have a number of excuses why you back one and not the other, but it still comes down to disallowing provinces the right to break from the country they don't want to be a part of and choosing a country they feel more aligned with.
You seem to think one country razing and invading provinces of one people is all right, but cry fie if another country does it to them in protection of those provinces.
Inconsistency doesn't wash. You are either for the freedom of people to choose the country they want to be aligned with or not. In other words, you either support freedom or not.

This is not the man any of us want to be the PRESIDENT! Based on his beliefs and statments he wrote in the above books.(plural) THIS guy is scary to say the least!
If you haven't read them, (plural) you don't know who you are voting for!"
and post #61
"I read, "Dreams From My Father, A Story of Race and Inheritance." (one book)
Please refresh my memory and tell us what time period that book (singular) is about."
The second book, "The Audacity of Hope" is much more recent than the first, and much more relevant since it outlines the author's more recent values and positions. But since those positions are far to the left of the majority of a more centrist America, the focus is diverted to the book that is easier to defend as "outdated" since it's about a decade "out of date" now and Obama can't be expected to keep the same stance for a week, let alone thirteen years.

OBAMA: "one person I'd be listening to, that's Michelle, my wife, who is not only wise, but she's honest."
Michelle Obama on Barack:
Early in Obama's campaign, Michelle Obama could not restrain herself from belittling the senator. "I have some difficulty reconciling the two images I have of Barack Obama. There's Barack Obama the phenomenon. He's an amazing orator, Harvard Law Review, or whatever it was, law professor, best-selling author, Grammy winner. Pretty amazing, right? And then there's the Barack Obama that lives with me in my house, and that guy's a little less impressive," she told a fundraiser in February 2007. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd reported at the time, "She added that the TV version of Barack Obama sounded really interesting and that she'd like to meet him sometime."
"Another person in that category is my grandmother, an extraordinary woman. When I've got big decisions I often check in with her."
I wonder if she’s so quick to give her opinions since he threw her under the bus as a racist.

Rejoice et al. You Republicans seem intense and preoccupied with Obama's decorum down to his statements and family relationships, especially with his wife.
Why don't you hypocrites "show the way" by illustrating and pointing out the "McCain 1st marriage success", and his college day behavior at the academy? The American public deserves to know what a "role model" looks like in GOP garb.
Conservative "principles" like those that make-up McCain's character are certainly subject to the same scrutiny that seems to be so significant in your biased criticisms.
I'll be waiting for the "lesson" on how to live my life. I've been married to the same woman for 46 years, so you see I have a lot to learn. There was something about "til death do us part" that impressed me.

We used to be able to vote a straight ticket years ago, but Republicans were able to take that option out of the voting process in hopes of winning in places like Cook County, Illinois etc. It now takes more time to vote against each Republican candidate, but I find it sort of a "sadistic" pleasure! I detest violence.

3n1gm4.....continuing our discussion re health care (my computer was down for a couple of days) on Saturday you seemed to condone $10 boxes of kleenex charged by "for profit" hospitals and $550 charge by an emerg doctor for 25 minutes of consult and then passed to someone else
as liability insurance is high you accept this as fair practice
why should hospitals make money off the backs of the sick....they should be revenue neutral and for the indigent some form of goverment insurance should reimburse the hospital
as for the "for profit" doctors it is indecent they put their pocketbook before their oath....restrict the amount of litigation awards except in extrordinary situations and have the doctors be able to treat the patients instead of their bank accounts
BTW...my son's insurance company settled the $550 bill for $320 and then the doctor sent a collection agency after the balance...it was only after the insurance company threatened legal action they withdrew and cancelled the record on his credit report

Rejoice, Obama's personal advisors are his wife and grandmother. They keep him centered in himself. He made clear, but maybe it was too hard for you to understand, that his political advisors were Sam Nunn etc. He chose people from both sides of the aisles. I was particularly impressed that he picked Dick Lugar whom I think has a good head on his shoulders.
I guess that was a little much for you to absorb, Rejoice, that both could be important.
Also, Obama never threw his grandmother under the bus, he merely was making a point that we can form opinions because of our environment, and they can be wrong even though we are nice people. His point was that, even though his grandmother was a nice person who wouldn't hurt anyone, picked up false impressions from her experience.
But again, I guess that's a little deep for the shallow minds of the Right Wingers on this blog.

When elected officals see and hear what a "majority" wants at all times (there's got to be new technology to be able to do so), you can bet your voter registration card that they will "change" as DEMANDED by the "majority".
Start demanding term limits, line item veto, fix social security, affordable insurance, secure our borders, deport illegals when "found" and a strong military for starters!!!

Canuck,
The number of non-profit hospitals in the US is dwindling and has been since the early to mid 90s. Most of the ones that still exist operate in the red or very close to the red and many have had to cut staff to make operating expenses. So, not only are they not “making money off the backs of the sick”, many are losing money.
The for-profit hospitals in the US make very little profit. They keep their profit margins low and although they are classified as “for-profit”, they are practically revenue neutral, often operating in the red. Hospitals are struggling to stay in business and a lot of the people I know that are in the medical profession are rightfully concerned about their jobs.
Part of the reason that hospitals are having such a difficult time is that they treat a lot of Medicare, Medicaid, and HMO patients and have to do so at a fixed price; negotiated by the government or the insurance company. As costs have increased, that fixed price has become less than what it costs to provide the service.
So again, discussing one of the many symptoms of the illness does nothing to solve the underlying problem. And in this case, the proposed course of treatment would kill the patient.

Umleed, if you think the civil war was fought because of slavery, you're way off. It was because of states rights and the South wanted to govern itself.
Besides, where in the Consitution did it prevent Secession?
This was a power stroke from the North to keep the Union together and the South from determining it's own destiny. Slavery was an afterthought.
And, I say that coming from the North. I never quite understood the South's side until I studied History. Also, ask a few Southerns, and they'll tell you their side.
It's not that I'm not happy with the outcome, but lets not get carried away with it all being about slavery. And, by the way over 600,000 lives were lost. It was a tragedy, and the South suffered terribly. Also a lot of those slaves stayed on the plantations, because not everyone was abused.

I still haven't heard from those freedom lovers why they think that South Ossetia and Abkhazia have no right to independence when they have been striving for it since the early 1990's about the same time Georgia broke from Russia winning its independence which we supported.
Why is freedom for one good but wrong for another?
You know probably not all Georgians favored independence from the Soviet Union and breaking with Russia.
Also, does our relationship with Russia mean nothing to us? Is it a good thing we sever good relations with Russia? How does that avail us?

leaving aside universal health care our hospitals and the technology within are very similiar...our health care providers are similiarily trained..if you consider the poaching on both sides...all other aspects of our health care on the whole are the same
why then the vast difference in cost??
is it because the various goverments in Canada are able to control their costs in a better manner because of the economies of scale?
