Letter of the Day: It has come to this?
Editor, Daily News:
Every day during the years that we came to Naples as snowbirds and for all the years that we have been permanent residents, we walk on the beach at low tide.
The routine is the same. We park at the end of Seventh Avenue North, leave our sandals on the steps and walk.
Yesterday, my shoes were missing when we returned.
I was more upset by the incident than the actual loss of my shoes.
We had another incident several months ago. We went for a bike ride and upon returning home, left our bikes on the front porch.
About an hour later, I decided to put the bikes back in the garage. I went out to the porch and the bikes were gone.
They were not new, fancy bikes — but someone stole them anyway.
Is this what Naples has become and should we expect more of this in the future?
Pearl Struminger, Naples
Letter: Hold on there
Editor, Daily News:
The guest commentary by Ted Raia concerning the Clam Bay “asset” contains much misinformation and a vicious broadside against Gary McAlpin, director of coastal zone management for Collier County.
I have served on the Coastal Advisory Committee (CAC) for over four years and can attest to the superior professional manner with which Gary has conducted himself. He directed the renourishment of the county beaches last year at a cost of almost $25 million and was commended by all concerned for the terrific job he did.
Let me list some of the facts concerning Clam Bay:
1. The Clam Bay Advisory Committee will be appointed by the county commissioners and not by McAlpin
2. Clam Bay is a navigational waterway and its permit is marked for navigation. The county is in violation of the permit. The Clam Bay Advisory Committee will recommend the appropriate action to take.
3. Clam Bay is a public asset and is to be managed for the pleasure and enjoyment of all residents of Collier County.
4. The county will never dredge Clam Bay for other than tidal flushing because dredging for other reasons could cause the property to revert back to WCI.
The gratuitous comment that Gary wasted our money on the proposed Vanderbilt Beach pier is not worthy of comment as we all know that what he did was at the direction of Collier County commissioners.
Also not worthy of comment is the allegation that any dredging of Clam Bay will increase the value of homes in the Seagate enclave.
Murray H. Hendel, Naples, President, Gulf Shore Association of Condominiums
Letter: Over the line
Editor, Daily News:
To Jose de la Isla, regarding his column on the rise of social intolerance:
I guess you just don’t get it. People are socially intolerant because they are aware that injustice is being done to them.
Your continual use of the term “undocumented” means illegal — not legal.
It means they broke the law.
Most of us obey the law. Many, many people come into this country legally. They spend a lot of time and money to become one of us for a better life. No one questions where they come from or what color they are. Most of us want law-abiding citizens to blend in with us; speak, read and write our language.
I find your columns offensive, suggesting that we should accept illegals for any reason, to use us for their betterment.
Where does this stop?
Sandra Judd, Naples
Letter: From the heart
Editor, Daily News:
I read your editorial on the death of Judy Keller.
What you said was wonderful, and so well-written.
She was a great gal. I knew her since I moved here in 1989.
I guess we all hope that someone can say something about us as nice as you did about her when we leave this Earth.
I could tell it was heartfelt and very sincere.
Susie Mehas, Naples
Letter: How intriguing
Editor, Daily News:
When 007 is mentioned most people think of Bond, James Bond. Almost immediately, thoughts emerge — intrigue, unreal, mystery, beyond imagination. James Bond is not here, but intrigue, unreal, mystery and beyond imagination are words that suggest how the Lee County budget has been portrayed.
For almost a year, the county commissioners have described the budget as being in “dire straits.” They announced unexpected terminations, implemented a questionable buyout plan and offered no salary increases while other county employees received raises. Positions were frozen, but hiring continues? Sounds like intrigue!
The facts suggest a different perspective. The operating budget for the year ending Sept. 30, 2007, was $448 million. The planned budget under the recently approved property tax cap is $445 million. The budget decline is only $3 million. Interestingly, if you multiply $448 million by .007 you get $3 million. Sound familiar? Maybe there is a Bond connection!
It’s unreal that county employees were put through such agony. And, imagine the impact it’s had on local citizens!
It’s a mystery, too, why they continue to “poor mouth” the budget. The planned budget includes approximately 250 vacant positions; that’s roughly a $15 million cushion. Annually, another 175 positions
($12 million) routinely become vacant. There’s another $80 million carry-forward balance (surplus).
It is beyond imagination to think they can’t make a 5 percent ($22 million) budget cut and give taxpayers some relief. Any public entity can cut spending by
5 percent, particularly when the budget has ballooned over 125 percent during the last eight years.
Les Cochran, San Carlos Park, Candidate for Lee County Commission, District 3
Letter: No party affiliation
What about us?
Editor, Daily News:
We live at Port of the Islands and want to commend our Daily News delivery person!
Tuesday morning, when Fay came through around the time of delivery, we didn’t expect to receive a paper. Unbelievably there was a Daily News in our driveway.
Kudos to all who worked to do this.
Additionally, it would be great if the local news channels and weather channel showed our community on their maps.
No mention is ever made of Port of the Islands when covering the area. We hear about Isles of Capri, Marco Island, Everglades City and Chokoloskee, but no mention is made of the Port.
It’s true we rarely experience any flooding, because when it rains it drains.
We have an excellent water and sewer plant that takes care of our needs via contract with Severn Trent Services.
Plus, we have a great community emergency response team (CERT) group to help with emergencies.
But, come on, guys, we are out here with a substantial population and we can have problems just as severe as those other communities.
Norine Dillon, Port of the Islands
Letter: ’Do you get it now?’
Editor, Daily News:
It appears my last letter has ruffled the feathers of some of the neo-con chicken hawks. They still don’t get it.
John (Double-talker) McCain does not measure up to being a war hero. He did nothing above and beyond the call of duty. He did not risk his life to save another life as others have done.
Example: Lt. John Kerry, while being fired upon by the enemy, is wounded by an explosion and a member of his team is thrown overboard. Kerry immediately orders his helmsman to turn swift boat PCF-44 around and return while still being fired upon, and pulls his team member aboard, thus saving his life.
Example: Sgt. Chuck Hagel is wounded but continues to pull his fellow soldiers to safety from a burning convoy being pinned down by enemy fire after running over a land mine, thus saving lives.
These are real heroes, not this so-called hero McCain, who’s only claim to glory was being shot down and surviving captivity.
Do you get it now?
As for his preaching of family values and the sanctity of marriage, he’s just another right-wing phoney as demonstrated by his confessed adulterous behavior.
At 43 years old in 1979, while married, he began an affair with a 25-year-old rich woman he later married, who helped him launch his political career. He is the first admitted adulterer to ever be nominated by his party for the presidency of America.
Collier GOP State Committeeman Al Abrahams and company must be very proud of their choice.
John F. Riccio, Naples
Letter: Coming clear
Editor, Daily News:
Now it is abundantly clear why Barack Obama refused to appear with John McCain in a series of town hall meetings!
In last week’s confrontation, without his usual teleprompter and words written for him by others, Obama sputtered and offered up vague answers while McCain was direct, straightforward and open — even showing a touch of humility and humor.
What was the response of the Obama crowd? Well, McCain must have cheated! And the media eagerly went right along in reporting the accusation, practically tripping over each other to be first to the microphones.
Did they attempt to check to see if these accusations were true before reporting them? It would have been very easy to do. Of course not. They left it to the cable networks to disprove these baseless charges. They either didn’t care or hoped they were true.
All they wanted was to get out the charge knowing that, to many people, just the accusation alone would hurt McCain. Anything to lessen the severe damage the debate had done to their savior.
The Obamaniacs have given up all pretense. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has stated that “God has given us Obama.” We have already seen that essentially any criticism of the “chosen one” is considered “racist.”
Next, we will be told that any negative word will be considered sacrilegious.
Donavin Baumgartner, Naples

Luke 16:18 (King James Version)… in Jesus own words… “Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.”
Sen. John McCain (affair, divorce), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (affair, divorce, affair, divorce), and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (divorce, affair, nasty divorce)... Reagan, Limbaugh, Dole, etc... the list is long... for every Democrat you can name there is at least one Republican.
Best to stay away from the topics of adultery and divorce like good Protestants and Catholics. Very few are able to cast the first stone.
Repent, you sinners.

ah, we knew freakio would get published soon.
freaky, who do you knblow at the NDN to get your stupidity reprinted time and again.
BTW, I didn't read your garbage, just noticed some idiot pointing out that you care about someone's love life.
A bit different to take a bj under the desk of the oval office, ain't it?
Just so you know, freakio, my right to free speech is at least tempered by enough character as to not use the names of people that I don't have approval to use.
I'll say it once again:
If JFReakio had simply used crosses, not the names of the fallen, for his political parade, I never would have said a word against him.
Keep takin a stand on the beach, dufus.

Obama was just 8 years old...
And he was just starting out when that lovely human being threw a party for him to become a politician to mold.
Liberals, your hope for a socialist society is justified because of what?

Rejoice and GoneCrabbin are absolutely correct about our indignation over an invasion of a sovereign country, displacing their government, knocking down statues of their leader...oops, that's us.

Rejoice,
You ever consider the fact that it is getting a little scary how obsessed you are with what is in essence horse feathers?
Perhaps you should take an afternoon off with GoneCrabbin. The two of you could mosey up to the Tampa Aquarium and see some real fish.

Gonefishin: That label, Socialism, that you love to use so much would imply how "evil" it is. Your "remedy" seems to suggest abolishing Social Security, Medicare, Welfare of all kinds, Unemployment benefits, and even maybe public, tax payer, education. Every American should stand on their "own two feet" like a good conservative Republican! The only "dead beats" or "crooks" like you like to call them are liberals taking advantage of these "hand outs". There are only stand up Americans in the GOP ranks, like the late Mr. Lay of Enron who "earned" every red cent he took to the grave with him. I chose to pick on him even though there are so many other "juicy" GOP targets to give credit to. He is a forgotten Bush era "achievement". Be grateful, that those programs you hate so much, prevent you and your ilk from being targets every time you step out of your "glass houses". Consider it insurance. You do believe in insurance, don't you?

rejoice,
pick your terrorist.
Ayers wanting to stop the occupation and bombing of Vietnam, or this administration going in to Iraq with baloney evidence and bad planning, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands innocent people and the displacement of 2-4 million Iraqis --many of the middle class with no future ahead of them.(That PBS special was heartbreaking this week)
Terrorism and death come in many forms.

Rejoice: read your own National Review site that you post...it is opposite to your statement Obama exchanges ideas with Ayers.......why do you continute to change words and post what YOU want it to say...it makes everything else you post less creditable
"Although Obama actually launched his political career at an event at Ayers’s and Dohrn’s home, Obama has dismissed Ayers as just “a guy who lives in my neighborhood,” and “not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.” For his part, Ayers refuses to discuss his relationship with Obama."

Donavin Baumgartner gets the "sour grapes" award for ltte today. Of course, McCain was secluded and very "honest" about the entire program. It reminds me of that old $64 million dollar question show of years past. The contestants then were also in a "secure environment". They later even made a movie about it. Of course, that was another Hollywood attempt to discredit business ventures and entrepreneurs.

Heretic... Pro-divorce?
The same quote appears in Matthew 19.(Plain English)
3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"
4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'[a] 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"
8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."
Remember...Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. Old Testament stuff. Are we New Testament believers in Jesus or Old Testament believers in Leviticus?
Never vote for an Adulterer.

Baum, McCain and his staff had every oportunity to listen to the questions and answers at the Warren interview before it was his turn. Did he cheat? Most likely, but there is no way to tell. His answers were all from his stump speechs, made -up stories from his 5 1/2 years as a POW, no thought or imagination. This type of response does work on American dolts, religous zealots, and help koolaid slurpers like you.
When McCain was asked if he had any help he would not give a straight answer, none of his staff would either.
As always, your every two week LTE's are amusing, thanks for writing them.

It distills down to this... by Jesus' own definition, John McCain is and always will be an adulterer. Is it OK to vote for an Adulterer for President?
How many say yes? How many say no? How many would rather not answer for personal reasons?

Oh my,
Turns out senator mcsame even lies about his baby to try and carry on the Bush legacy.
"As was pointed out yesterday by the Christian Science Monitor, the McCain campaign was called out for lying about the purported urging of Cindy McCain by Mother Teresa herself to adopt two children at her orphanage back in 1991. Turns out, McCain never met or even spoke with Mother Teresa on that trip.
Once confronted by the Monitor about the deception, the campaign quickly erased such claims from the website, as it did with Cindy's family recipes, which were proved to be lifted from the Food Network."
Making up stories about meeting MOTHER THERESA? As though McSame has the backing of The Almighty himself......
LMAO.
Might pick up a few votes from the immoral minority led Republicans though. And the stolen cookie recipe is pretty good.

Let's see..Ayers today is a well respected university professor and Keating (as in the Keating 5) served years in prison for fraud and lies. McCain cheated on his first wife with his current wife and divorced his first wife after she fell ill, while continuing the affair with the rich, beautiful Cindy. As a former 18 year resident of Arizona, those of you who are backing McBush need to do your homework. This guy not only will continue the Bush/Cheney regime, he is corrupt, a liar, and shows signs of PTSD and senility. OK..lets vote him into the White House and add house #8 to he and Cindy's list of homes. Those of you making $5 million a year can elect him and continue your fluffy lives...but the rest of us know the truth about McSame! He is an idiot!! and we will wish for the Bush/Cheney days if he gets elected!! Yes, he is that bad. Pay attention and seek the truth...our country can't afford any more idiots in the WH.

Gator you and your buddies sure like to spin.As for vets and POW's here is a statement in my letter 08/13.
As for being a hero he just doesn’t measure up.
General Wesley Clark emphasized being shot down and imprisoned doesn’t qualify you to be president and I’ll add it doesn’t make you a hero either. To me and many other veterans a hero is someone who does something “above and beyond the call of duty”Like saving someone else’s life while endangering yours.
I do not deny praise and admiration for all who served their country especially those who had to endure wounds and captivity ,but please lets not degrade the actions of true heros like
John Kerry,Chuck Hagel,Wesely Clark and so many others who’s actions were
“ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY”
Oh and by the way this needs repeating for you. Chuck Hagel is not a democrat he is a republican senator.Get it idiot

in case this thread missed it this is what Mr. 9mm dixielee thinks of the present conflicts:
"In the years since terrorists attacked us, President Bush has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people. And the Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking."

Please do not be angry with Mr. Riccio. Let us pray for him to have the blindness of ignorance lifted from his mind. Remember he probably has been indoctrinated with this blindness via the government schools, liberal professors, and the liberal media. Let us pray that this blindness can be lifted from Mr. Riccio and replaced with the truth and objectivity. I too was blind but now I see.

BRACO UPDATE!!!!!
They found his half brother somewhere in Africa. According to the report, his half brother lives in a "tent" and makes less than $5.00 per month? So much for BRACO's quoting scripture regarding helping your fellow man!!!! This guy is a half brother and ignores him?? Please tell BRACO to give him at least a 10th of his wealth as a gesture of good faith and love.
QUESTION FOR ALL LIBERALS: Recently I met a person who referred to himself as a "BLACK AMERICAN" not an "AFRICAN AMERICAN"! WOW! He was emphatic about the difference. What is PC? Please advise asap.

You are right Friccio. This war is even being fought on the cheap, which is really freakin' expensive. Bush just borrows the money from the Chinese to give the Iraqi's a free National Health Care System. Something the Bush administration apparently feels 48 million Americans are not good enough for.
It is indeed time for change.
Keep it up Friccio. There are too many chickenhawks roosting in Naples. Tough guys ready to sacrifice others life to enhance their ego.

Go Hillary!
"A prominent Philadelphia attorney and Hillary Clinton supporter filed suit this afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission. The action seeks an injunction preventing the senator from continuing his candidacy and a court order enjoining the DNC from nominating him next week, all on grounds that Sen. Obama is constitutionally ineligible to run for and hold the office of President of the United States."

I did not sever Barack Obama's umbilical cord, I do not know anyone who did, and therefore I cannot know for sure absent more than circumstantial evidence whether or not Stanley Ann Dunham opened wide and gave birth to the Illinois liberal in Kenya, in Hawaii, or elsewhere."
I know folks, it is indeed sad.

Knital
the milk of human kindness just flows from your pores doesn't it.
That was quite an interesting story about Barack's brother BEING FOUND after intense searches.
What part of "missing" and destitute do you not understand. Why mock Obama for this? His dad was not present in his life, nor his dad's family. That deserves our compasssion, not our disdain.
Why is it you "christians" feel the need to destroy rather then to uplift?
Baracks brother is a sad story, one of millions in Africa. They need our compassion not our mockery.
How about putting forth solutions rather then destruction?
What do you and the christian right intend to do to help the millions and million in our country not getting health care? Or who have been put into bankruptsy because of health problems. Show me your compassion on this issue.
The situation gets worse as the years go on, and Obama has a plan. Do you know what McCain plans?
Re-importing drugs? HUH? Why not negotiate with drug companies here for the lower price they pay in ALL other countries?
Solutions?

John F. Riccio,
Whether you love him, hate him, or are indifferent, it's an undeniable fact that McCain
performed one of the most dangerous jobs you can do in the military. The state of the art anti-aircraft defenses around Hanoi exceeded the AA defenses of all of Nazi Germany. Just getting in the plane is a brave act.
What you say in your letter is no better than what the swift boaters did to Kerry.

a quick thought on "hero".
I always thought hero was something very special. Someone who did something "heroic" and out of the ordinary. Now everyone gets the hero title.
I have deep respect for John McCain and his service and am sorry he was in a prison camp. But being shot down and imprisoned in itself, is not a "heroic" act.
Or would you say, anyone and everyone who signs up and goes to war is a hero? True to an extent.
Does that not demean the true hero who risked his life to save someone? All soldiers are heros in that they give their life to service. BUT, then what do we call the REAL hero's who did more then their duty.
I think it sad that we are even having this discussion...Kerry,Cleland, McCain..all to be respected for their service. All. Not just the repubicans who served.

#48 Myopinion. You say now you see the light. Does that mean you are a "born again Republican"? You know Ronald Reagan had the same kind of "miracle vision". You too might become president. His victories in Grenada, Irangate, Nicaragua, El Salvador not to mention bringing out the battleship New Jersey "to pound" the terroists who killed 241 marines in Lebanon into "submission?" are textbook military lessons that have produced the likes of General Petraeus. God is good and provides. The "lights" are shining.

John,
Your crosses touch my heart when I go to see them. I honor those soldiers and can put politics aside, and just look at them and am sad and grateful for their dedication.
It is our little Flanders Field in Naples and we should ALL honor those fallen soldiers and feel the awesome spiritual quiet space around that diplay.
Sad we cannot ALL see that, but make it into something partisan.

pantsuittamer (sorry, had to do it once having just seen the panted lady): Cry me a river. When the facts surrounding JFK's assassination are unsealed, we'll find out the whole truth. Most likely, you don't know why Nixon's staff went to the Watergate in the first place. You probably think 2000 was the first controversial election.

Wow! Another great letter by Riccio. I always wait to see them because he has so much good info in them, info that can't be disputed.
You all know that John Edwards wouldn't have had a chance once his adultery came out. It's one thing to have it found out once a person is in, but it's another thing to elect someone you know not only left his first wife for Cindy, but he lied to Cindy too. He lied about his age and condition of his marriage. And oh, his first wife was ailing from a bad accident. So much for our valient McCain.
Also, without Cindy's father who had connections, some even criminal, and money, McCain would never have been elected to the Senate. He was a new comer and unknown in Arizona. So, it was also a good political move to tell a few lies to Cindy and marry her.
Talk about political expediency and ambition for himself.

Opnmind, your comment
"I think it sad that we are even having this discussion...Kerry,Cleland, McCain..all to be respected for their service. All. Not just the repubicans who served."
is one that agree with 100%. It's sad that the partisanship has gotten this bad.
My opinion in regards to McCain's "heroics", getting shot down and imprisoned wasn't "heroic", nobody volunteers to get shot down. What I do think was heroic was the act of getting in the cockpit and pointing the plane north.

Gator I agree with your comments 100%. Friccio is nothing but a blow hard that makes himself look like the moron everytime he opens his mouth. Anyone who puts on the uniform and serves their country particularly in a time of war, deserves the respect of a hero. To claim that a man that was a pow is not a hero is just another disgusting claim by an idiot that is completely blinded by his closed-minded political views. Keep up the posts Friccio... I need a laugh and you provide good entertainment. The amount of stupid people in this world never ceases to amaze me.

Also, Riccio's crosses are such a touching commemoration of those who gave their lives in service to this country. Riccio has such reverence for their service he does this several times a year, even though it's takes a good deal of effort and time.
As he said in his previous blog, his family, including himself, have valiently served in the military. And since many of you think serving in the military makes a hero, then Riccio is a hero, and I don't want any bad mouthing of him.
I notice that Right Wing Hawks have and had no trouble smearing a real hero like Kerry. That was about as low as low can get what the Swift Boaters did to him. Talk about traitors.
Also, for all you who think that not liking and speaking out against what our leadership does constitutes treason or lack of patriotism have amnesia. This country is a democracy. Got that.

Mr. Ricco...you sir are a moron. Not only did McCain serve and protect, but became a POW. While he was a prisoner of war, for almost 6 years, he was chosen to be sent home before other soldiers that had been POW's longer than him. What did McCain do...he said no "I will go home in the order that I arrived here." That in of itself makes him a hero. Get a life!
#51 Posted by deano440 on August 22, 2008 at 12:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
opn, Most who sign up for military service do it for thier own benefit, a paying job, room and board, education, healthcare, retirement, etc. Not that it isn't a good thing to do and if they served our country well they should be honored.
John McCain served his country and was unlucky to be shot down and held as a POW. McCain has used his military record [being a POW] in every political campaign since he retired from the Navy.
An honest look at McCain : He was educated at the Naval Academy at taxpayers expense and almost flunked out. His time in the military was fair at best, although he did suffer with injuries and as a POW, he also helped our enemy with thier propaganda, signing a letter condeming the United States.
He plays himself off as a hero, he is far from it. To use it the way he has in this campaign is sicking.

"Obama's greatest career accomplishment to date is that he wasn't elected to the US Senate when votes were taken to authorise the invasion of Iraq.
"This subsequently allowed him to claim the peacenik high ground over the likes of fellow Democrat senator Hillary Clinton, elected at the time, and who was forced to confront reality - she voted to get in there and kill Saddam Hussein."

And if we're to engage in specifics and nitpicking, I am not your friend, your drinking buddy, or any family relation so we shouldn't be on any first name basis. Either use the screen name that I was required to utilize for registration or the last name. Use of my first name is misleading and improper.

Gonefishin: Oh sure Nixon was "robbed" by that Kennedy "bootleg" organization. That so upset "poor Dickie" that he resorted to a pattern of GOP revenge that ultimately made him profess, "I'm no crook!" That "slime" showed his colors after his thumping in the California Gubernatorial race. "They won't have Dickie to kick around anymore" is what he said. They should dig up that dirt bag and do an Oliver Cromwell on him. Check that one out on your constant U-Tube "explorations". Nixon the epitome of Republican deceit, crime and degeneration!

Bossman: We don't have to worry. When McCain wins, he can make himself an admiral as "commander and chief". Bush has made himself an "air ace" with his landing on an aircraft carrier - "Mission accomplished". That confirmed his Alabama National Guard Duty that nobody has come forward to detail with facts and proof he was actually there. Funny, I don't have that problem. Of course, I was in for five years. That's a little longer and more people would be able to say they saw me around - womanin all the time. My US id explains why. Is McCain for or against the draft? He seems to be "flip-flopping"?

Gonefishin: I don't have to defend Kennedy for any reason. It has no special significance in my political philosophy, I do have regrets in regard that I voted for Nixon against McGovern, delusional with the same conservative/GOP poppycock that still is prominent today. I have thought of cutting off the hand that voted for Nixon, but that would be anti-Pro Life and counterproductive. Now that same hand votes against every Republican that dares to run for office.

bossman1,
I've been taught since I was a small child to address people by their last names. I also have the habit of addressing people sir or ma'am out of respect. The use of first names implies fraternization/close relationship. The use of first names appears to be custom down here.
As for helping Riccio, while I have no problem standing up for what I believe in, I prefer to do it alone. Every time in the past when I've joined in some sort of battle with other people, when things get really rough, I've always found myself alone. Kind of like when I found myself literally hanging from a rope one day while my platoon watched me suffocate. No thanks.

Well, I think God blesses John Riccio because he knows his heart is good.
As for me, I hope Riccio gives you Right Wingers an ulcer. I know that's malicious, but, boy, do you deserve it.
I hope no terrorist hear your blabbering. It for sure will put us is greater danger because they'll know the Great Satan is for sure possessing some of our people.
One thing that kind of bothers me is, that I've been a Republican for many years, and I never saw all this hatred. Maybe I didn't know the likes of you Right Wing Hawks. A lot of the people I knew were and are nice people. Now I wonder If I can still stay in the party, just like so many other Republicans. We feel that the crud of crud has taken over.
I used to think we were dignified and polite, had a sense of responsibility and accountability, and we were nice people.
The only thing I can think that happened is we got a couple of cult leaders like Bush and Cheney, and they have smothered us with their evil. There. I said it, evil. What else could it be that put our country in such a condition, so deep in debt, so downed in war, so many of our soldiers dead, not for our protection, but for our greed. And we're so hated throughout the world?
Why are we shunned so? We're reeking of something because of Bush/Cheney and the hatred and viciousness they've engendered, and it's not good. That's why it's important that not only our party rid ourselves of them, their leadership and their ilk, but the country too rid us of them. We must vote them all out.
I long for us to be the loved and respected country we used to be. I want to be proud again. And, I want our party, The Grand Old Party, back.

Actually no. I never really cared for the BeeGees (I'm the "Death before disco" type), and I later had the misfortune of getting stuck with two roommates in the barracks who were rabid fans of the BeeGees. Umleed, I don't have a need to be liked although I certainly prefer it. What I was alluding to when I said the world does not like us is, it's not a wise thing for us. We need allies in this world. It is not wise to make enemies.
Maybe you think we can fight the whole world, but you may have noticed the trouble we're having in the little, weaponless country of Iraq. We even have had some help from our allies and some of the people within the country.
Now imagine if we had to take on a formidable enemy from without and had no allies. In fact not only have no allies but have cheer leaders for the people attacking us.
You make a big mistake when you think you can dis the world and not pay a price for that.
We're not talking about people liking to come here, we're talking about all the potential enemies that could arise in this world, and we don't want to stand alone.
Notice that it took a number of allied nations to defeat the Axis, and as much as you like to dis Russia, they played a big part in the Allies winning. It took four years and a lot of deaths to win that war.
So, think twice before you think you can turn up your nose to the world and not pay a price for it.

Canuck -
You don't like it when anyone tells the truth about the history of the papacy and the Catholic Church. When you read history, do you skip over the parts that were critical of the Church? Do you think all the Popes and other members of the hierarchy were spotless and blameness? You must be as blind as a bat. Do you think all the present day priests are pious? What do you think of the priests and other members of the clergy that have had sex with altar boys? The church has paid out billions of dollars to the victims of clergy abuse. If I were a Catholic, I'd get out of a church that has done so many evil things in it's long history.
Sorry. I got carried away. I have also read the history of the Catholic Church.
