NAPLES Collier County registered voters go to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots for a new sheriff, in a Republican primary for District 5 county commissioner and to choose candidates in two School Board races.
Collier elections officials predict a turnout of 20 percent.
For those who didn’t cast their ballots in early voting, which ended Saturday, or who didn’t request an absentee ballot, precinct polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Including absentee ballots, Collier has 93 precincts that will be reporting.
Gary Beauchamp, chief deputy of Collier’s Supervisor of Elections Office, said Monday that 7,246 registered Collier voters took advantage of early voting. That’s 3.7 percent of the total 197,716 registered voters. Through Saturday evening, 12,638 absentee ballots had arrived at the elections office. That’s 6.4 percent of total voters.
Absentee ballots can be taken in person Tuesday to the Supervisor of Elections office at 3301 U.S. 41, in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Building at the Collier government complex, until polls close at 7 p.m.
Overall, 10.1 percent of all eligible Collier voters already have cast their votes, Beauchamp said.
“We’re anticipating a total (turnout) of 20 percent for the entire election,” he said, noting that this estimate includes the already cast 10.1 percent from early voting and absentee balloting.
Why so small a turnout?
“It’s a primary,” Beauchamp said. “In ‘06 we only had an 18 percent turnout. But we had more early voters in this primary.”
The general -- and presidential -- election is Nov. 4. That is when some of those who win Tuesday’s primary may face another opponent from another political party.
For example, unopposed Democrat Russell Kish will test his popularity against either incumbent Commissioner Jim Coletta, or Coletta’s opponent, Roberto “Bob” Alonso.
Voters will use a new optical–scan voting machine, replacing the touch-screen system that was done away with because it didn’t create a paper trail.
On the new system, the paper ballot has ovals next to candidate names. The voter uses a black or blue pen to color in the oval. When it’s done, the ballot slides into a scanner that counts the votes. Once it’s filled out properly, the scanner accepts the ballot for counting.
These are the highlights of Tuesday’s ballot in Collier:
*Three Republican candidates face off for a final decision on who becomes Collier County sheriff. Because no Democrat or party-unaffiliated candidate is running, all voters can cast a ballot in this race. Whoever gets the most votes becomes the next sheriff, even if a majority vote isn’t achieved by any of the three.
Sheriff Don Hunter isn’t running again. The candidates for a four-year term are former Undersheriff and former Naples Police Chief Kevin Rambosk, limousine company owner Vincent “Vinny” Angiolilla and private investigator Victor Ortino.
*Collier School Board member Kathleen Curatolo seeks re-election against challenger Rick MacClugage, a Barron Collier High graduate who owned Courtesy Automotive for 20 years. This is a nonpartisan race for a four-year term, so the top vote-getter wins Tuesday. It’s open to all registered voters in Collier County.
*School Board member Linda Abbott faces five challengers in another nonpartisan race open to all voters countywide. She is challenged by Gulf Coast High School teacher Julie Sprague; local businessman Mark Swanson; Lely High School substitute teacher Gary Smith; Adrienne Markopolos, an intervention program supervisor at David Lawrence Center; and Joe Paterno, executive director of the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board.
To win Tuesday, one of the six would have to receive at least 50 percent plus one vote. If none of the six does that, the top two vote-getters return to the ballot in November for a final decision.
* Some Republicans can vote for either incumbent Collier Commissioner Jim Coletta or challenger Roberto Alonso in the Republican County Commission primary. Then in November, the winner faces Russell Kish, a Democrat. This is open only to registered Republicans in District 5, including Golden Gate Estates, Immokalee and the Everglades City area.
* Public Defender for Southwest Florida is on the GOP ballot. All Republican voters in Collier County as well as those in four other counties choose a party nominee to face a write-in candidate in November. On Tuesday’s ballot are Kathy Smith, appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist in February to succeed the late Robert Jacobs, defense attorney Rex Darrow of Naples and veteran attorney Brian Boyle.
* Democratic voters in House District 101 choose between Maria Jimenez, a Golden Gate resident, and Samuel Lopez, of Pembroke Pines. The winner goes on to face current office holder Rep. Matt Hudson, R-Naples, in November. The district spans eastern Collier and western Broward counties.
* In a small part of rural eastern Collier County, Democrats in House District 112 choose between Betty Gaffney and Juan Espinosa, both of Miami, with the winner facing incumbent Republican David Rivera of Miami in November.
* State Committeeman in Collier. Voters choose among Michael D. Lyster, Douglas L. Rankin and Frank Schwerin.
* Precinct 317 Committeeman between S. Bruce Millon and Donald L. Towns.
* Precinct 210 Committeewoman between Cheryl A. DeShaies and Sally Gene Frederick.
There will be other legislative, Congressional and fire commission races on November’s ballot, plus some issues and final votes on any of the races not decided Tuesday.

Vote Ortino for Sheriff.
(I see where they didn't say he was a former highway patrol trooper or former Air Force MP, but he is).

Vote Kevin Rambosk for Sheriff! "mothernature" failed to mention that Ortino was fired from FHP for timecard fraud. Ortino wouldnt be eligible to be a deputy if he walked in and requested an application....
Just some food for thought when you go to the polls tomorrow!

Commissioner Coletta is the subject of a complaint sent to the Elections Divion in Tallahassee. The Naples Daily News reporter, Ilene Stackel contacts him about the complaint before she writes the story and posts it on the NDN website on Wednesday, August 20th night. Coletta states that he cought the violation which was accepting too much Campaign Contributions from one person, a clear violation. He further said that he wrote a letter to the Elections Office advising them about it. The letter, is dated August 21, 2008 which is the day after the story was posted by NDN. That means that when he told the reporter that he sent a letter, there was no letter at the time. In his letter which is part of the Campaign Treasurer's Report F3, Coletta wrote that he refunded the $250.00 over contributed which he admitts to accepting, to the contributor on August 7, 2008. The refund check written by Coletta is dated 7/7/08. The Contribution Refund Report he submitted with the letter states that he discovered the excess contribution on 08/11/08 and he refunded the money to the campaing contributor on 08/11/08 which would be the same day he said to have discovered it on the report which contradicts what he stated in the letter. On the Contribution Refund Report Coletta stated that he refunded $150.00 total. This also contradicts the letter. According to the complaint the excessive contribution was $250.00, if he only returned $150.00 of it then he still has $100.00 of the violation money and that further extends his violation. The letters and reports which are evidence of fraud are signed and attested to by him, therefore he has committed purgery. Oh, it gets better, there were also two other same type violations, one was from the Mayor of Everglades City's wife, and the other from a big wig corporation in New York. He has two seperate letters each for the additional violation but he failed to submitt the Campaign Contribution Refunds for each violation so there is no official record showing that the monies were refunded to the contributors, and when.

Rambosk is going to get rid of Youth Relations Deputies if the school board doesn't fund them he said it on a televised debate. Ortino is qualified. More so than some of those people Hunter & Gail Addison hire & neither of them are cops.

This county and the honorably serving deputies are desperate for a change in the Sheriff's Office. The Office will continue down the current encrusted trench if there is not a change.
Victor Ortino has the desire, heart, goals and vision to make that needed change.
Vote for Ortino and he will bring to light a Sheriff's Office that will be a respected open agency, right for the great citizens of Collier County

Bigburd, You forgot to mention his firing was overturned because no charges were filed. And, he qualifies for sheriff. That's all that matters now doesn't it? And he will show the transparency that Charlie Crist wants of all governmental agencies to do, unlike the CCSO headed up by Brigid O'Malley. I wonder how Charlie likes it that his good friend Don Hunter's office goes against a state law? Oh, that's right that seems to be the norm, rather than the exception to the LAW. I still bet that Charlie didn't like the e-mail he got about the records not being released. Heck, they are even doing it to the media and another person who e-mailed me who is apparently a citizen like I just wanting some answers. I know those answers ... they are holding off on any requests until AFTER the election. But, doesn't matter, elected officials can always be suspended and removed from office by ... the Governor.

Ten things not to do if you intend to run for Sheriff. I'll stop at 10 but feel free to keep it going...
1. Neglect an education past high school
2. Leave your last job in law enforcement on bad terms.
3. Base your political platform on running against the incumbent when the incumbant is not running.
4. Forget to check your kid's My Space page.
5. Forget to have your kid's criminal record sealed.
6. Neglect taking classes on public speaking.
7. Buy only one ill fitting suit.
8. Turn Mothernature loose on the blogs.
9. Hire pornographers to work on your campagin.
10. Hire all the disgruntled former CCSO members at your agency as P.I.s with intent to hire them back into law enforcement if elected

15. spray paint over your own campaing signs with stencils that look like "Vote Mom"

Ortino never said he was going to fire 400 deputies & you know it. Your guy the ex undersheriff who had to resign cause he was breaking Federal Law did. It's on video. Also your guy did talk about the YRD deputies it was on tv & it's been a well know fact for awhile around the CCSO before he was forced to resign that he wanted to do away with them to cut the budget.
#20 Posted by Toesmom on August 26, 2008 at 6:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Why is one of your people on Leoaffairs.com saying the following? Said by some idiot named Akovendetta:
ex-Chief Steiss, Ortino is not going to win the election. The saps who have campaigned, blogged and supported the second place finisher will hopefully be told that they are no longer needed. There are many quality applicants waiting to get hired and hopefully some of them will be hired as their replacements.
See this is why most employees of the CCSO are afraid to publicaly support Ortino, not to worry most early voted & voted for Ortino, because here's the mentality of the supporters, the ex-undersheriff himself & even the current sheriff. We fire anyone who does not support our guy & does exactly as we say. You are our puppets & I am the master. It's time for change. Remember if they fire anyone who supported Ortino it's a violation of law & there will be one or more federal lawsuits filed. Real good press for the CCSO. Just what you need now with the Storrar thing & the many other things to follow. Don't you just love the fact that all information from the CCSO is public record. I can't wait to see the audit. I hear it's good.

More lies from toesmom, the wife of the disgraced deputy, Tony Lauer.
Have you noticed the most ardent supporters for Ortie are the guys who were fired for blatant misconduct.
Kevin Rambosk believes in accountability, professionalism and ethics. Kevin Rambosk is the only qualified choice for Sheriff.

JYD, How do you know anyone has won? I didn't know the votes had been counted. Seems like it's going to be a long, long night for sure...
No matter who wins any election, I do hope they do what is right for the community FIRST. Some difficult decisions will need to be made in the upcoming weeks and months and I hope anyone who gets elected will make the proper decisions. We may not always agree with those decisions, but as long as those decisions are made with the community at heart and with facts in front of the elected official, then that's the best we can ask for. I appreciate all the candidates running because it is not easy in this day and age to put your name out there. Everyone has some kind of skeletons, no one is without fault. Go vote today and vote your conscious and from what the records have revealed. And, good luck to everyone.

Pieface, I don't drink and I did mean it. I don't know if I'll go to any victory parties. I've been invited to a few...
Everyone should be careful out there tonight. And, to all the officers/deputies out there, stay safe. This has been a harried and hectic election. I know several of the candidates will not fire anyone because they supported someone else. If anyone is fired, no matter their occupation or which elected official they work for, please consider that you were exercising your rights to vote and to participate. If the person needs fired or let go so be it. But I hope ALL candidates really take a good look first before letting people go. I stress that is for ALL elected officials. Good luck.

I asked Alonso for information about his business experience, his people gave me excuses over the last few weeks like he is fighting a hurricane, he is very busy, and they told me to please read his information on his website. Nowhere does it detail any prior business management experience. There are a great many unfounded accusations and claims, no organization for his grandiose plans. Due to these factors and other information I uncovered through public information requests, I have deemed him unqualified to sit on the Board of County Commissioners. My extensive research left me with too many unanswered questions. Thankfully this will be over tonight.

If you don't think that Kevin Rambosk has already won for sheriff then you may not understand how politics work. You have a select group of people that control local politics through their support of candidates and their businesses in the community. Didn't you notice some State positions such as Representative and Senate that were open seats had no competition and the candidates won without an election.
Rambosk is sheriff. It was decided a long time ago. Who do you think is voting today with a 20% turnout. Working stiff "Joe Blow" or every voter 30-100 years old west of U.S. 41 in Olde Naples, Port Royal, Park Shore, Pelican Bay. He will win with 60% plus and there will not be a run-off. About 40,000 voters will participate.

#36 Posted by ww2vet on August 26, 2008 at 10:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Kevin Rambosk, the likely successor to Sheriff Don Hunter, was garnering more votes by a two-to-one margin over private investigator Victor Ortino.
Five of eight voters in various North Naples polling places, willing to share how they cast ballots, favor Rambosk, with the other three other voters wanting Ortino. A third candidate, Vinny Angiolillo, did not receive any early votes.
Irene Lang, a registered nurse at Naples Day Surgery, didn’t like the way Ortino and Angiolillo campaigned.
"Rambosk stayed very professional," Lang said. "He was a gentlemen. The other two were mudslinging and that is uncalled for."
