NBC-2's Jessica Stilwell takes leave due to husband's legal woes

Jessica Stilwell

Jessica Stilwell

Television news anchor Jessica Stilwell, the wife of indicted real estate agent Samir Cabrera and daughter of a top Lee County official with ties to Cabrera’s troubled land deals, is currently off the air at NBC-2 in Fort Myers.

The 11-year veteran of the station is on a leave of absence, Waterman Broadcasting News Director Darrel Adams said Friday.

She is still an employee, but she will not be anchoring newscasts.

“I can confirm for you she is not on our air,” Adams said.

Stilwell’s husband was indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts of wire fraud in June in connection with two commercial real estate deals that have lost investors about $5.5 million. The indictment was expanded this week to include seven counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering. Some of the money laundering charges described in the new indictment include payments out of a joint bank account Stilwell had with her husband.

Meanwhile, Stilwell’s father, Lee County Manager Don Stilwell, has faced scrutiny this summer for his role in Cabrera’s land deals. A county-ordered investigation is looking into whether he lied to county commissioners about his role in one of Cabrera’s deals, while other links between Cabrera and Don Stilwell on land deals in the county have emerged.

Those include Don Stilwell’s direct investments in Cabrera’s projects, his role mediating an internal financial dispute within Cabrera’s business, the fact his initials appear on a federal indictment as the recipient of allegedly laundered money, and his role loaning money to his son-in-law at the point the investment deals were failing.

Adams described stories involving the indictment and the county manager as important ones for the community — and important ones to cover.

“And that’s what we’re doing,” he said.

The decision for Jessica Stilwell to take a leave of absence at this point was a joint decision, and that the conversation came about “because further indictments came down,” he said.

“We met with Jessica yesterday in regards to the things going on in her personal life,” Adams said. As for what those personal issues are specifically, “you would have to talk to her about that.”

Jessica Stilwell said she’s looking forward to being back on the air.

“My goal, after this is all over, is that I continue to work for Waterman Broadcasing. That’s what I would like to do,” she said.

Jessica Stilwell, 35, and Cabrera, 31, have three children. They were married in 2003.

Immediately after their marriage, Cabrera went to work in real estate at D’Alessandro & Woodyard, which was a prominent commercial real estate brokerage in Lee County.

Before that, Cabrera had been selling insurance, and he had previously managed nightclubs.

At D’Alessandro & Woodyard, Cabrera’s boss was the late Frank D’Alessandro, who was a close friend of Cabrera’s new father-in-law, Don Stilwell.

In the two commercial land deals that are the subject of the federal indictment, Cabrera acted as the manager for the investment projects, while D’Alessandro’s mortgage company was the lender and Don Stilwell — as well as an assistant county manager — were investors.

The land deals described in the indictment are both along Fiddlesticks Boulevard in south Fort Myers. Cabrera is accused of buying the properties through one company he controlled, then selling the land the same day at a higher price to investment groups he had put together — all without disclosing the marked-up price to those investors, then paying himself and others more than $2 million dollars in “kicker fees” out of the investors’ money.

According to the indictment, the wire fraud and money laundering charges all describe transfers of money that were proceeds from an alleged scheme to defraud — including a transfer of $100,000 to a casino is Las Vegas.

Cabrera has pleaded not guilty, and his attorney John Mills has said that both land deals were ordinary — if failed — business deals, not any scheme.

In addition to the federal charges, Cabrera is facing multiple lawsuits in connection with various commercial and residential land deals.

Despite making what his attorney described as a very good income in past years, Cabrera is also facing financial problems, as public records show multiple foreclosures and the repossession of a vehicle.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Unfortuantely for her, any media business does not want to be associated with this type of negative publicity (whether she knew anything at all about what was going on).

What a tragedy for the children.
Hope she will find a way to salvage her career and protect those kids. With her father under a veil of suspicion as well, she can't even take refuge with her parents. Perhaps there are others who can provide the support and stability the young children will need.

I also had a feeling that this would happen. I believe she knew what was going on. She's an educated, bright womam, she's not a naive young girl.

Don't feel bad.. she sure as heck didn't have any pity for the stories she reported in the past. Her husband is a crook and he should be sentenced and embarrassed publicly like everyone else. Their personal property (father's too!) should be sold to recover any damages that were incurred and both sentenced to prison.

Ya, to bad for the kids because daddy, grandpa, and maybe even mommy bilked a lot of inocent people out of their life savings. Oh boo-hoo. How about a tear or two for all those people who had faith in these scammers. They all knew waht they were doing, and the fact is that their kids didn't count.

I don't feel bad for those who are guilty, and we can't try them here! But the children are innocent and hopefully will be protected.

Are we really being asked to believe that a seasoned, professional reporter had no idea why hundreds of thousands of dollars were rolling in and out of her personal account? She's either a crappy reporter or involved with this mess. No two ways around it.

Good to see she's gone. Lock them all up in jail. She had to know what was going on. Her hubby must have been proud of his deals and told her all about it.

I also had a feeling this was coming when the story first broke. Hopefully the children arent school age and have to deal with torment from other kids.

Bullbat, I'm just saying she's either a lousy reporter by not realizing something fishy was going on involving oh...everyone in her family..., or she was involved. I'm not saying guilty or not guilty, I'm just wondering rhetorically.

With a very few exceptions, it is redundant to call a television personality a lousy reporter.

Let's all remember that an accused person is presumed innocent until a verdict of guilt is reached by a jury of one's peers. Ms. Stilwell is not charged with any crime, and to consider her of any guilt by association is an affront to our criminal justice system.

This woman has served our community well in the last 12 years and deserves our support. We should take stock in the fact that she has continued to report on many stories, including her husband's, with the professionalism that all the NBC-2 news team has always demonstrated.

If I were in her shoes I would not be reading these blogs but it is my hope that some of her friends will pass my support on to her. Jessica is a valuable part of our everyday SWFL news day and she deserves the support of us all. Don't hold her feet to the fire for whatever her family is accused of.

She's always been a proven, justified, honest and straightforward reporter...that will never change.

Jessica, hang in there...there are a lot of your viewing public that echo what I've written here, and I'm sure those that do agree will show it in this blog. Good luck fine reporter, we support you so hang in there and fight the good fight!

I was wondering how long before her husband's federal indictment was going to go on before it began to effect her job.

I knew it was just a matter of time.

Federal indictment, or not, it appears that the husband is in DEEP DOO DOO. The related parties are either limiting the damage caused by this indictment by removing themselves from the public spotlight, and/or, perhaps people are staying clear of the wife and husband. These actions remind me of a criminal caught red handed. They immediately look to limit their losses.

fort123...the Deallesandro family has nothing to do with this situation.

Let the guy rest in peace.

I think if it was foul play, it would be a little different.

Real estate deals R going South these days, especially with the economy.

Times R tough, but to connect this with Deallesandro is kinda low.

Sometimes when you care for someone, you may NOT see the signs which others see. Wives and husbands for years have found themselves cuckolded and while maybe they thought something was off, they wanted to believe the best about their loved one. Is it possible this was the case for Ms. Stillwell. As Bulbat said, the concept in the USA is innocent until proven (beyond a reasonable doubt) guilty. The situation is scandalous for the station IF she was involved, so they did what they could to protect the guise of objectivity. (No, I don't think the media is objective, whether it is local or national, but most at least try to give an appearance that they are.)

I also agree that that there is a lynch mob mentality operant which is unfortunate.

Let the indictments come, let those who are indicted have their day in court. Being premature here is not a great idea.

well said MarcoRobert and BlueTonguedVole,,,,,
i support Jessica and applaud her actions the last 12 + years, and hope that the station will allow her to return to her career as soon as this mess is over,,,i say that in the hopes that she was/is a "blind" loving wife, mother and daughter,,,if/when the others are tried and convicted, will be enough of a blow to her and her families, without the public< at least we bloggers> stoning her in any case,,,ive been ,,,taken to the cleaners before ,so i know how it feels,, and yes i was PO'd, Big time, but once that wore off,i realized that i was my own worst enemy because im the one that Let these other people ,, take some dang hard earned cash from me,,,, i blame ME,,and also,i Know, that one day,it will all come back on them,,, i just hope i will be there to see it, not that i Have to be,,, just knowing ,what goes round ,,,comes round,,is enough for me,,,,:-),,,,

This kind of thing is going on all over SWFL. They got caught. It's sad that the County Commisioner was involved. People do these things and never think about the effect on their children.

It's the oldest way to make money: scam others!

People don't realized that it is also the worst way to make money. They eventually will catch you because you've upset off so many people!

#28 Posted by SmartyPantsIndependent on August 30, 2008 at 6:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok everyone, let's set the story straight on Ms. Stillwell. Now she is a good newsperson and I have met her personally and she is a good person.
But let's look at the real facts, why is she still with this loser and here are the reasons:
1.)Samir has cheated on her numerous times here in SW Florida, probably why she was on the air and in other states (Las Vegas, Nevada).
2.)His office staff were hand picked hotties and looked like a strippers hangout.
3.)She took a office at his office because of his office "Ho's" to watch over him.
4.) All the guys he hung out with were wannabe rollers and cheated on their wives (Don Turner, once married to the Lee County EDOC chief Regina Smith)and others to numerous to mention.
5.)Samir's "rock star" like attitude and the night he destroyed a bar, threatened the staff, ran off customers and ended up paying out huge money to repair and replace valuable art at this establishment(The Cru).
So as you see the guy not only has serious flaws in his integrity as a business person, he also has serious personal integrity flaws.
So you have to ask yourself this question why is she still with that loser, I commend her for not giving up on a marriage as most people do today, but come on this is a bit much.
So the real victims here are the children.
Do the right thing Jess and leave this piece of crap before he ruins anymore of what you have worked for in your life.

beetlejuice, I don't mean to be harsh but what planet are you on? Quote: D'Alessandro had nothing to do with this?

Who do you think financed these deals? Who do you think held interest in the mortgage company who approved all the loans for all those non qualified buyers of the single family housing deals? Who do you think was the Real Estate Broker? Im' with fortl123 Tony Soprano knows where the money came from. I think it's called laundering isn't it?

And as to poor Jessica....An educated woman who sits through a few dinners with her father and husband, shares a banking account, sleeps and eats with her husband, moves on up like the Jeffersons with her bar manager spouse in less than 2 years and you can sit here and say that she doesn't understand where the money came from, then I want to sell you some beach front property in Immokalee.

Amazing how people feel bad for Jessica, she has known all along what was going on. If you don't think that you are a fool.

Someone once told me the only difference between the people in prison and CEO's is that prisioners have been caught. Well perhaps she should trade her Dior Pantsuit in for strips.

Guilty

Cabrera is innocent until proven guilty, but Jessica should have been reassigned a few days after this story broke.

I did like Leftovers comment though.......nightclub manager, then insurance salesman, then real estate guy.......

She should of divorced him when his income was high.

#37 Posted by volochine on August 31, 2008 at 1:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Volochine,
You obviously don't understand the greed factor here. How could she leave when his income was high? When was his INCOME high? She would have been way too busy entertaining and wineing and dining prospective investors/victims.

When his trial begins perhaps we'll see if he ever earned any legitimate commissions? I doubt it. His days in the real estate business started because he had insider information from a corrupt city employee and that infomation initiated his career change from bartender to realtor and fueled this greed factor.

Even if he received sign up commissions on any of the planned single family housing, many of those buyers were never legally qualifed for the loans they were approved for so those deals never came to fruitation either. Another scam planned to just watch the money change hands.

Why does everyone keep forgetting Todd Turner and Ian Schmoyer these guys are worse crooks the Jessica's daddy

StepUp....to get close to the departed D'Alessandro, he had to be producing some major income. I agree with you about the collusion.

Only 1 reason a woman stays with a man she has doubts about. Money.

Please don't tell me "I obviously don't understand the greed factor here". The American economy and legal system is all about greed.

#40 Posted by volochine on September 1, 2008 at 1:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is all very sad, but I hope to see Jessica on the air again soon. She is my favorite newsreporter in SW Florida.

Good luck Jessica! You have a lot of fans and followers supporting you!

#41 Posted by vegasjunkee on October 1, 2008 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't think Jessica knew what her husband was doing. At the time she had two little babies with another on the way and was working a full time job. I feel sorry for her because all she did was pick the wrong guy to fall in love with.

Plus Samir is not clever enough to come up with this scheme by himself. Frank D'Assandro was the mastermind behind it all. So the question is... Is he really dead or stage his death and is on his private island in the Bahamas?
