Toys for Tots can now bring smiles to a few more children this Christmas, thanks to a $1,500 donation. The money was raised during Lely High School's 39th annual Toy Drive Command, and will benefit disadvantaged kids from infant to 13 and serves those not only in East Naples, but in other areas of Collier County. This year, some 600 families, with approximately 1,600 to 1,800 kids will benefit. From left are, East Naples Deputy Chief Nick Biondo, toy drive coordinator; LHS Principal Ken Fairbanks; Student Council secretary Victoria Howard; Act Director Paul Ruby; Student Council vice president Halley Kretschmer; Student Council president Jordan Caruso; LHS Student Council advisor Tamara Hampton and East Naples Fire Commissioner Rich Gibbons. Gregory Foote, center, head of Lely High's Construction Tech Lab, stands with Danny Tyler, left and Fred Weinman of The Education Foundation of Collier County who surprised Foote by telling him he is one of 40 teachers who have been selected as Teachers of Distinction. The 40 become candidates for a Golden Apple as part of the 19th Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition, which will be announced in May, 2009. Above them are students finishing a storage buidling they helped make. The students also build doll houses and real houses in Foote's class. Roger LaLonde/Staff
