Mr Buckley,
Please understand that teachers do "get it." They are the ones complaining the loudest. And it sure doesn't take the kids long to figure out how to work the system. I tell my students that the grade on their report card is a reflection of what they learned during a particular time frame, nothing more. I will still value them, appreciate their contribution to class, encourage them, and teach them.

speakwithfacts,
I agree, "self esteem comes through hard work and accomplishment." Even if one fails, there is a lesson to be learned.

Trust me, Collier County is far from accepting "warm bodies" to its teacher ranks. I have recently been in a position to truly compare teachers from Lee & Collier. The "teachers collecting a paycheck" will never be able to be eliminated completely, but salary will continue to be a factor in who applies for the job. It is up to the Principal to decide who will be hired. Excellent teachers will always gravitate to where they feel they can be effective, whether it be in Immokalee or at Barron Collier.

I bet there are some coaches in south Lee who would love to see sports eliminated in Collier County Schools.

Don't forget about the move to a 7 period day next year in the high schools. What was predicted last year, 70-80 elective teachers being lost? That is big bucks!

Mimibuck,
Thank you for clearing that up for me.
I agree with you on "who to believe."

Chickendog,
I think you hit on something! Does only a portion of the operational $$ go to the state and we get to keep all of the capital $$? Are there other school districts pushing this reallocation? I know Lee isn't.

#9 Interesting comment on the "ratio" of capital vs. operational. If all the school districts in the State of Florida are having budget issues, then why hasn't the State changed the ratio? I'm not sure of the history of the "ratio", but I thought it came about when districts weren't building schools fast enough to keep up with the increase in population. Perhaps the pressure needs to be put on the State to make some changes.

One Christmas vacation, back in college, I came home & worked in the fields planting tomatoes. It was sobering...didn't need another reason to get that degree!
