Our litigious society has created this scenario.
When an adult strikes or even touchs another adult without their consent it is considered battery/ unlawful touch or strike and it an offense you can and will go to jail for.
You have an unruly child that cannot be disiplined ( this one for example?) then what?
You love the child but he pulls a knife on you?
Can you imagine the trust issues there?
I know I wouldn't be sleeping in an unlocked bedroom in a household with this child, would you?

I agree with you 100% but I want to play devils advocate here and ask what is the difference between spanking and beating? Your interpretation of both may be different then mine or the next parents. It is commendable that your children never feared but respected you as their parents. However I want to point out many families nowadays are still single parent families, disipline and supervision that a 2 parent family can provide is hard. I was raised in a single mothers home for several years as I grew older and bolder, the spankings were trivial at best and I got to the point where I would laugh at my Mom and ask are you done? They did not hurt and they no longer got my attention, then what? A timeout?
Our litious society has created the monsters. Parents are afraid to spank their children in fear of reprisal by an outside source or even the children themselves. When a child knows the Child and Family Services number by heart and threatens to call that presents some tough circumstances for a parent. Risk going to jail and being branded a child abuser or try to disipline an unruly child. Tough call, a child was more afraid of the spanking he was going to get when Daddy got home from work then anything else 20+ years ago. The anticipation was the worst.

#46 The child committed aggravated assault which is a felony. He did not just throw a temper tantrum, did not throw himself on the floor crying because he did not get his way. He picked up a knife, pointed it at his mother and told her he was going to kill her!
He may be 11 years old BUT has the means and showed the intent by picking up a deadly weapon and pointing it AT her. That is a tough call, many here would have bent the kid over and beat the snot out of him, whether that would've helped, I don't know. But thats doesn't change the fact that he commited a serious felony towards a loved one.
