Yepper a whole buncha boats too.

And each and every passenger had their hand out for freebies as provided by the good folks already living here and paying taxes.

Not one of those had to carve their own life out of a wilderness. Each had a huge social infrastructure to depend on for free food, housing, medical treatment, and money to get started with.

Folks there is a world of difference between pioneering someplace and just hopping over with a huge safety net that, at worse, will provide you with three hots and a cot before attempting to send you back.

On Unions:

It is argued back and forth whether Unions have caused, or at least contributed, to the down fall of certain companies both past and present. I, personally, believe they have. But at this point does it really matter?

What matters is the fact that anyone invested in any way in the "Big Three" did so voluntarily and stuck with it for years. Whether by owning stock, working there, or selling their cars.

As of now it is apparent to all you backed the wrong horse. However the decline of the businesses came about if you were depending on them you should have been much more pro-active in finding out what was going on in the head offices and as side deals. You should have been more involved in the contracts your Unions agreed to and made sure your future was protected. You should have taken a closer look at the "bottom line" before investing in those companies.

Businesses fail at times. All the people involved with the business could invest more cash, take pay/ benefit cuts, and a plethora of other steps to bail out the company that you have a vested, private, interest in.

You don't need my money to help you out of a situation you failed to plan for even though it was readily apparent for years prior.

Heck of a leader there at FGCU. He made a decision. I didn't agree with it but he made it. Then the political tide turns and he folds like a cheap suit.

Reminds me of FGCU prior to 11 September 2001. Administration was hot about displaying anything that should show patriotism for the USA. After that date an employee is caught enforcing the regulations and has a storm of abuse heaped on her.

Ahhh the winds of change.

The answer...cast nets.

No laws against using them in a neighborhood. If they fly that low over your property and you "just happen" to be out "practicing" using a small, inexpensive, four foot in diameter, available at most tackle shops and Walmarts, cast net and it "just happens" to entangle a remote controlled air plane can you really be held accountable?

I mean the operator obviously "just happened" to lose control or track of his planes where abouts and coincidence is a problem in our lives at times.

What choice do you have then, as a civic minded citizen, but to call law enforcement to come and retrieve this item and return it to its legal owner?

So not only does law enforcement have to look for the big neon sign over someones head that says "Don't taze me as I am currently on crack and you could kill me." But now they have to look for another sign that says "Don't shoot me even though I have a gun pointed at you. It is only a pellet gun and I don't speak English too well. Even though anyone would realize that if a lot of cops are pointing guns at you it is a good idea to drop what you are holding in your hand even if it is a Pellet gun. I should be excluded from standard procedure because I don't know enough not to pull a gun on a cop for any reason at all."

boulderbilly,
I must fit into your category; I'm pro-gun, and my son killed himself last July. But golly gee willikers he failed to murder any innocent civilians while he was in the US Army. Must have been some failing on the part of his murderous Marine mother.

Biggest problem with all PWC's is that no one realizes that in order to safely operate one at higher speeds a person should have a certain weight MINIMUM depending on the size, displacement, and horsepower of the PWC.

At higher speeds the PWC depends entirely on thrust and hull resistance to control direction. Unlike outboard, IO, or inboard motor vessels there is no "tiller" effect from machinery in the water.

An under weight PWC, at high speeds, usually go into skids. People do this intentionally most of the time and just consider it part of the fun.

Too often through the years I have witnessed light weights hit the throttle wide open only to move at an oblique of the direction that the handles were pointing. Only to regain control AFTER slowing down.

Even with enough weight, if not distributed properly on the PWC, and suddenly accelerated, the things can be uncontrollable.

The only reason PWC's circle is when someone falls off and it returns to slow idle. And only then it is because of torque.

So, in my opinion, everything that the officer said happened is entirely possible. Not that it will change his responsibility as the operator.

All that said my condolences go out to both families and I wish you well.

I would like to make a note about response times for emergency services.

Far too often I have seen jerks NOT pull over to get out of the way of emergency services. I have also seen jerks try to beat a light when an emergency vehicle is trying to respond to a call causing the responder to actually stop until the intersection is clear. And not just motor vehicles but also bicyclists and pedestrians.

I'm starting to wish that the emergency services had some sort of tagging device so the jerks can be caught later and either pistol whipped or tazed for a good long while.

For those that don't know: In the state of Florida it is the law that you always yield to emergency vehicles when their lights are flashing. No exceptions.

There are no tattoos on my forehead. I'm capable of doing my own thinking. And those folks mentioned in #2, I don't listen, watch, or read (whatever form of media they use) anything by them.

A member ship fee only allows one the privilege of paying greens fees and paying for other benefits covered.

When advertised as "immediately refundable" that usually means that the fees are kept in an ESCROW (sp?) account and readily available. The advantage for the collector of the fees is getting the interest from the account.

So the fee itself should not be actually dedicated to anything except getting returned on demand.

Unless...the company was counting on a certain amount of interest return to for income.

But they can just fire a few grounds keepers and cut back on employee benefits to make up the difference, all the while insuring that the ones responsible for the bad book keeping get to keep their pay and benefits, if anyone gets too insistent about their "immediate refund".

As we all know screwed up business practices ALWAYS gets blamed on the bad economy.
