I would hate to open a business in Ave and not be Catholic. I don't think you would have much of a chance(one has already failed). Other than that it is a nice, safe place to live which will get much better when the Publix and a gas station are finally finished. I don't mind all the Catholics. At most they leave annoying leaflets on the door on occasion. The breed of Catholic we have here seem to be overly concerned with abortion. If you don't want an abortion don't have one. I encourage abortion because increases in abortion directly correlate to decreases in crime.

Berry earned his spot in hell with this one. Pacheco is a POS and his family is no better. I hope the girl gets away from all of them as soon as possible with no further injury. For those of you who believe he was an asset to the community, you can take comfort in the fact that he will be back in about 6 years. The state attorney did what he could. This is why people make lists. There is no justice.

Lay off USD...Children can be gone in a second and some drownings occur with adults in the water and nearby. This story is great because everyone around rushed to the aid of those in need.

My only thoughts on the Sheriff's race are that I thought more people would run. I remember races in other parts of the country where I have lived where there were several qualified and highly trained individuals running instead of one. One race involved an 20 year incumbent and a resident who worked for a large department in a nearby city.
There are no retired individuals with training and experience interested in running for a term? We always here about how people did things back home....Why don't some of these people show us how they did it back home by running for office? The more qualified candidates running, the better the race. The sheriff's office would only benefit from having several viable individuals going at it.

I also heard a rumor about school board members abusing their gas cards. Anyone else hear anything?

With inflation, last year teachers lost money in real dollars. Teachers that received steps got the 2% and eventually the 1% "bonus." Those that did not receive steps got the "bonus." Inflation was running over 3% last year not counting the increase in gas and groceries(and we all know about gas and groceries last year).
This year the union is proposing teachers lose money for a second straight year and the board is saying hold on a minute you are asking for too much. The CCEA is worthless. There is a ballot issue in this election which will allow the board to move money from the kickback side of the ledger to the operations side of the ledger and this could be used to bolster teacher salaries. I doubt it will happen. Even if they get the measure approved they will find some other junk to waste it on.
What the school board fails to realize is that most of their constituency doesn't mind paying taxes for teacher salaries or custodians or safe buildings. What drives tax payers, and teachers, crazy is the amount of money spent on construction, new equipment which is unneeded or never used, "reading coaches", new curriculum with attendant garbage every year, astroturf for football fields and way too much administration.
I am also tired of the way the board and the administration set up teachers to be the bad guys over salaries every year. Thompson could have made a lot of friends last year by repeating this mantra, "I know it sucks, I am sorry we can not do more, we will try to do better next year, but it doesn't look good either. Trust me and when there is an opportunity we will do right by you." Most teachers would have been frustrated with that answer to their demands, but it would have been better than the approach which was used.

By the way...the law school hasn't moved out here yet because the building hasn't been built and they already had an existing building in Naples they could use in the meantime to allow some flexibility.
If you want to make fun of something then get your facts straight. Make fun of the fact that a lot of students don't pay a dime of tuition and most receive a ton of financial aid. There has to be a trade off to convince healthy hormonal young adults to spend what could be the four most care free and fun years of their life in a town where birth control is verboten and you are required to live on campus. You can't tell me the kids at Notre Dame don't party hardy. The university should model their partying and athletics after Notre Dame.
A lot of students are future priests and nuns. Can you imagine? 18 years old and you want to commit to a lifetime of "celibacy"(evidently lesbianism and pedophilia don't count against the celibacy requirement). Where is George Carlin(may he rest in peace) when we need him?
I like the town and my neighbors and I even like the fact that there are so few residents. I will be much happier when the Publix is built, but even then I will still shop for veggies at the farmer's market in Immokalee. Living in a self righteous town has a lot of benefits. I don't participate in a lot of the frowned upon activities anyway and when you do decide to live it up it makes your sinning that much sweeter.

Aabel, never fear...other non-Catholics live here. We are choosing to stay for now because our son is about to start high school and we don't want to move him in the middle of that. We also have very stable jobs and the community is the safest I am aware of. We make a lot of use of the miles of sidewalks for running and walking, etc. We enjoy the water park. If they ever manage to build the gas station and finish Publix I will find it difficult to leave.
I think the church should try a tie in with the casino. They could tie their brands together and encourage gamblers to come by the church first and get a blessing(for a small donation) before they go to the casino and spend their paycheck.
There is no denying the town is more vibrant when the students are here, but it ain't that much more vibrant. A lot of the students look like extras from the Harrison Ford movie, Witness. They would fit in on one of those mormon compounds in Texas. I remember looking forward to springtime at my beloved alma mater when all the coeds would start traipsing around in their shorty shorts. Here you hope the winter stretches to June(I am just being mean, they aren't quite that bad. At least mom and dad don't have to worry about too much fornicatin').

no harm, no foul...zero tolerance policies are just a way to for organizations to cover their heinies in case they get sued for sexual harrassment. If these people were adequately performing their job functions, then I really don't care how they were using their computers.
