The sippy cups is a little extreme. (The other comments happen all the time-even in elementary school). It is more likely all the growth hormones in the feed for chickens, pigs, and cows. There is not much time between slaughter and being on the store shelves so hormones are still in the meat. I try to buy only open range, grain fed, etc. for both of my teenage kids. It takes a little more effort but I try to make dinners from healthy perspectives rather than pre-made, highly processed foods.
The author is right, kids are growing up to soon. If one proposes guidelines for parents, then it becomes just as controversial as what is art/what is porn? Who will decide when is it ok to wear make-up, date?
It is the parents who need to be involved. If the kids are involved, exposed to different activities, then they can find something they love to do. Parents need to teach their children manners. Manners are free. Kids need to learn to use them. Parents do need to lay out rules and stick to them. I look at cell phones for my kids as a security aid. Technology helps me let my kids earn the privilege of more freedoms. There is no greater leverage than the threat of taking a cell phone away if the attitude is bad.
We need to protect our children from "Hollywoodization". And the legal system needs to protect our children from predators a whole lot better than they have been.

If DCF gets involved this baby will not survive toddlerhood. Let the grandparents keep this child safe if they are able to handle a baby for a couple years. Make sure both parents are clean and sober, have completed several parenting skills classes and are employed. Good luck to this child.

And mothers:
This is a good story to print and save for your daughters if they have bad taste in men. Now this 18 yr old girl has been arrested for GRAND THEFT, a felony. This is how she gets to start her life. This is what will hang over her for the rest of her life. All because she thinks she is in love. Face it, the "bad boys" of today are different than the "bad boys" of 30 years ago. Back then all they did was smoke, drink, drive their cars too fast. Today, bad is a whole different level. If her parents rescue her they will be spending their retirement to hire an attorney to defend her. Or we taxpayers will. What a waste. What a shame.

Why don't they hide tiny cameras in the drawers and on top of the dresser? They probably don't want to spend $ to do it right.

Also, very funny posts today folks. Made me laugh out loud.

If any one of the nine judges had done the right thing in 2005, this woman would still be alive. She would get the pleasure of watching her child grow up and could have had more. This child will never get to experience the love of its mother for his/her life, will never get to share the joy of winning a soccer game, asking for help with math, going to prom. Mom won't be there when this child gets married. Just this big empty space its entire life.
This man finally is getting what he should have gotten 3 years ago. Thank you Judge Krier for having the you-know-whats to keep this man off the streets and keeping us safe.

Puffy, have you changed your name from Zhu Zhu? That is exactly the kind of ignorant statement Zhu Zhu would have made!
Did you even read the article? How does DNA matching keep the black man down?
Jeez, it's scary that you are even allowed to vote!

Gosh, I hope this isn't "Rainman". He always had well thought out responses, a balanced viewpoint, and legitimate "small businessman" concerns. RIP.

Shame on our flimsy laws and the first judge who gave him an easy sentence which allowed him to go out and ruin some more lives.

I agree with #11 Beetle. Stop it, it just takes away your credibility.
The issues are someone has an addiction problem and they are resorting to the illegal behavior all addicts have. She first needs to deal with the addiction problem and go into a longterm rehab program and then face her legal problems.

I remember reading about this case when it was happening and thinking this was wrong to put this boy through this. If my daughter chose to make a bad decision, I would be upset with this boy but I wouldn't press rape charges. With two children already the boy has made some mistakes but the mother is certainly enabling her daughter in her bad decision making. This is how you teach kids to blame others for the consequences of their actions.
