silverback, what you said makes no sense. "It has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with a relationship with Jesus"?? Well what is "a relationship with Jesus" if not an expression of religion?

And what if you don't have a relationship with Jesus? Maybe because you are Jewish, Buddhist, or some other religion? Or maybe you don't have a religion at all? Last time I checked, we don't have a theocracy here in the US.

As it happens, I believe in Jesus, too, and I attend church regularly, but I don't think Jesus would for a moment stand in the way of two people having a committed loving relationship. I also don't believe that God, in His infinite wisdom, would ever have created a whole class of people -- gays -- who are to be considered defective, abnormal, sick, evil, or sinful just by being who they are.

I would not impose my beliefs on others, though, and I don't think you have the right to do that, either. If your religious tradition is that you don't want to call a gay union "marriage," then go for it. Personally, I think that the government should be out of the "marriage" business completely -- it should issue licenses for civil unions for everybody, gay or straight, religious or atheist, and then couples would be free to seek a marriage blessing (or not) from whatever religious group they wanted to. Churches could decide for themselves if they wished to bless same-sex unions.

Maybe these "activist" judges (quite a few of whom have been -- gasp! -- Republican), are finding anti-gay marriage laws unconstitutional because, well, they ARE unconstitutional. Basically "activist" is just code for "somebody who makes decisions I don't agree with."

Yay, NDN! I've lived here over 30 years, and don't remember this paper endorsing a Democrat. A wise choice, this year.

All you wingnuts who are cancelling your subscriptions because of this, how pathetic. Are you *so* threatened that you can't even bring yourself to read a newspaper that generally runs very conservative, whose only weekly columnists are very right-wing (Sowell, Ambrose, et al)? You'll get cooties by even touching it?

Those of you who are bent out of shape about Obama's comment to Joe the Plumber about "spreading the wealth around" must be super rich, otherwise I don't understand your hysteria. Obama isn't a socialist. But over the last (at least) eight years, wealth has been more and more concentrated in the top 1-5% of Americans, while the rest of us have lost ground -- lower wages, and way fewer ways to make progress and get ahead. If you're *netting* over $250,000 a year, surely you can cough up an additional 3%.

Though I disagree with John McCain on just about everything and probably wouldn't vote for him under any circumstances, his choice of Sarah Palin for VP totally cemented the deal. It was utterly irresponsible. Yes, she's a Governor -- so was Bush, who was also a business owner and has an MBA, and look where that got us -- but the population of her state isn't much more than the population of Collier County during season. And yes, Obama hasn't been a Governor or run a business. But look at the difference between the two of them! There is no comparison in terms of temperament and judgment.

Palin is can barely string a coherent sentence together. She thinks she has foreign policy cred because Alaska and Russia are neighbors, she can't think of a single newspaper she reads, she can't name a Supreme Court decision she disagrees with -- and she would have us believe that she was so horrible in those interviews with Katie Couric because she was "annoyed" by the questions?!?!? And she's utterly dishonest. Never mind the "bridge to nowhere" that she lied about constantly, now she comes out and says that the bipartisan Alaskan legislative committee completely exonerated her in the Troopergate investigation when in fact they found that she had violated a state ethics law. Unbelievable.

Obama is the only responsible pick for President this year.

A basic business and economics course and should be mandatory in high school. Every student should know how to maintain a checking account, understand interest, and have some clue about how to manage credit cards and so forth. There should be no excuse for people saying they just didn't understand how borrowing vast sums of money when they didn't have the means to pay it back could come back to bite them -- and the whole American economy -- in the butt.

Hey sowestfla1975, I do live here. Have for a long time. Permanently since 1974, and as a visitor since the early 60s. What does that have to do with anything? I made the comment about the ice at Germain because that's what was used as the original explanation for why the rally was going to take place at Alico Arena and not Germain. None of that has a bit to do with my intelligence, success, integrity or character.

And from my perspective, Republicans have no claim to any of the above. Especially if the last 8 years are used as an example. Can you honestly, with a straight face, claim that George Bush exemplifies intelligence, success, integrity or character?

McCain is no different than Bush, and Sarah Palin is a joke, a total insult to the American people. If you all want to waste an afternoon listening to her fractured syntax, not to mention her lies, and all her "you betcha's" and other cutesy hockey-mom drivel, have at it. I suspect that in a month or so she'll be retreating to Alaska, so you might as well enjoy her one-and-done visit down here.

I thought they couldn't use Germain Arena because there's ice down for the Everblades.

I wouldn't waste my time on Palin even if she came to my living room.

Heh, I haven't talked to a pollster yet, not one. This is totally doable -- you use Caller ID on your phone. If you don't recognize the number or name, if the name is blocked, don't answer. Let an answering machine pick up. If it turns out to be somebody you need to talk to, you can get right back to them. If it was a pollster or a campaign solicitation or a sales call, you can ignore it. Much less aggravation that way.
