That is exactly the right thing to do. To the smokers out there - believe me, no one cares whether you smoke or not, and no one is trying to take away any "Right" that you have (although I have yet to find smoking listed in the Bill of Rights). The only reason this is even discussed is because of the seemingly universal lack courtesy displayed by the majority of smokers. Pull up to ANY stop light and you will see piles of cigarette butts on the pavement. The same people who would probably never think of throwing a pile of garbage on the street wouldn't think twice about tossing their cigarette butt out the window. I don't get it - why don't smokers think this is trash? Why do I have to see the ugly evidence left behind by smokers when I walk up to our beautiful beaches? If smokers would police themselves, and not put up with this behavior by their fellow smokers, we would not be having this discussion. As I mentioned before, smoking is not a "Right". However, I know that the responses on this message board will try to make the case that it is. Fair enough - If it is, then your "Right" to smoke is contingent upon not infringing on the rights of others (namely, not causing others to have to breathe your smoke, not having to use the tax dollars of others to pay for cleaning your cigarette butts off the street, and on and on). Good job, Naples City Council - I applaud your actions!
